Busy Boats is a simple picture book with very few words per page. It tells about all sorts of trucks in the world. Each page has a picture of a boat with the job that it does. Each of the boats are operated by cute little cartoon like animals that caught the attention of my 2 year old sister. This book is really neat for boys and girls for all ages.

The pictures are very colorful. In back in has a page where it explains parts of a boat if you are not familiar with some of the words used in the book.

I would recommend this book to children ages 4-7. Lots of kids like to read about boats and transportation.

For your little mate & boat lover or future captain!

It's tough looking for a book that is about boats! My nephews birthday was fast approaching and I still hadn't found a book on boats until I happened upon this book! What I love about this book is that it's about all sorts of boats from dinghys to race boats the author Tony Mitton pretty much mentioned every type of boat that floats, except a Chinese Junk or a cannoe! And he some how managed to make each sentence rythm as well. The characters aren't too cutesty, so boys and girls should like this book a lot! There is lots of terrific information and on the last page has drawn pictures and a mini explaination for words like lighthouse, anchor, propeller, oars, deck, cabin, name and cargo.

To give you as small taste of this wonderfully written book - " A boat sits on the water like an empty bowl or cup. It's hollow and it's full of air, and that's what keeps it up." Pretty clever!

Great Book ! The author does a great job describing the emotional roller coaster ride while restoring a wooden boat. Good mix of humor. Easy read, will make you smile if you've done it.

I also recommend "Restore your Wooden Boat by those who've done it" particularly Chapter 3.

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Anderson's review. I'm new to sailing and of course considering my own boat building project. I did enjoy the local descriptions in this book and meeting in the book several boat builders local to Puget Sound. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the author's internal debate at every issue. The philisophical rambling and self-loathing about his shop skills gets old very quickly. Contrary to what the cover advertises, there is no humor, especially the self-deprecating variety. I wish I had spent my money on a "How-To" book instead.

The craft of building sailboats was commonly practiced thousands of years ago; in the modern era, it is a lost art. "The Year of the Boat: Beauty, Imperfection, and the Art of Doing It Yourself" tells of author Lawrence W. Cheek's struggles as he strives to construct his own sailboat in spite of his ineptness at carpentry and even the act of sailing. A charming memoir about one man's efforts to construct a magnificent wooden vessel he could call his own (a plan that should have taken a hundred hours, but ended up taking him an entire year), "The Year of the Boat: Beauty, Imperfection, and the Art of Doing It Yourself" is a memoir that many can relate to. A top pick for community library memoir and nautical collections.

Building Boats and Character

Like any "big project," building a boat reveals a lot about who we really are, opposed to who we'd like to think we are. I think many of us understand that intuitively, if not openly.

Fortunately, for most of us, building a boat (or remodeling the kitchen, come to that) need not take on the importance of a quest, as it does for our author. We are told that building a boat is different than remodeling a kitchen, though. It's something larger, more mystical than the usual do-it-yourself project. This is boatbuilding for the Me generation. Everything becomes inflated, exquisitely personal and, at length, perfectly tedious.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not a how-to manual, but a description of how he found himself building a small wooden sailboat as a first time boatbuilder, punctuated with philosophical musings and stories of learning to sail and other related experiences. I identified completely with the author in that I followed the same path of dreaming about the Haven 12 1/2, wondering about Sam Devlin's Nancy's China, and then getting realistic and choosing Devlin's Zephyr. The book is a well-written, personal memoir and should be read by anyone whose ever toyed with the idea of building a wooden boat.

This is an excellent book for anyone starting a Volkswagen restoration project, even for those with a Karmann Ghia and not a Beetle. The pictures were plentiful and very detailed. Definitely one of the best books I've seen on this topic, and a fun read as well.

Very nice text for working/restoring a Volkswagen Beetle, and even other air cooled relatives (mechanicals, headliner, door overhaul, and others). It is almost full color, which is a treat. The only problems I have with it is it is a soft cover (can get damaged easier) and some aspects are left to the experts. Oh, and it is in British English, which is not really a problem, and makes the text more interesting. ;-)

I was looking for a reference guide for the signals at the tracks near my house. This book gave me a basic idea (I guess there are too many configurations/railroad) but most of the book covered the early history of signaling. Interesting, but I wanted more of a recent 'field guide' type book. I have 7 signals to look at within a mile bike ride of my house and I still cant figure out 5 of them!

I purchased the book in my capacity primarily as a railroad union officer (BLE&T), and secondarily as an amateur rail historian (former Vice-President, Pacific Region, NRHS). I was hoping to find the book to provide a bit more technical detail than what it contains. Having been involved in several signal related accident investigations, I have found my techicnal expertise to be somewhat lacking when the time comes to interview those railroad employees whose responsibility it is to maintain and repair railroad signalling systems. I don't know that Brian Solomon's book will go a long way towards helping me increase that knowledge; but it does provide a comprehensive bibliography which I am sure I can put to use in reaching my goals in that regard. From a historical perspective, the book is a helpful primer to those who wish to understand the basics of train control methods.

This is a basic overview of all types of railroad signals. It covers the history and development of visual and electrical signaling systems. To get an understanding of how signals work this is an excellent book. Unfortunately no book could cover all signals that you may encounter trackside. Because each railroad has its own signal system, you will have to refer to their timetable to decode local signal aspects and indications.

An easy read with excellent graphics, "Railroad Signaling" is a must for anyone interested in railroads and the technology that goes with them.

I worked as the BN Roadmaster's Clerk at Northtown for five years and had an excellent working relationship with the Signal Department. By reading this book, I now understand the complexity of signal installations.

This book is written in a way that a lay person can appreciate how the different types of signals operate in relationship to each other. Brian Soloman speaks about the signal systems in various part of the country work (and are different from the BN's) and has pictures of same.

This book is a must for railfans.

Brian Solomon's Railroad Signaling book is one that has been missing from the ranks of books about railroads for many years. There has not been a general publication about the sometimes perplexing and interesting world of railroad signaling aside from GRS's book of many years ago and an article in Trains magazine from 1957. Anyone who really wanted to understand these things, had to either befriend a railroad signaling engineer or maintainer, or become one!

So, while the need was great, and this book could have been a welcome addition to a serious railfan's or modeler's library, there are enough troubling points about this book that make me want to caution you about it.

Mr. Solomon decided to take a historical approach to the development of the art and science of signaling. While that is as good an approach as any, the unfortunate result was that about two thirds of the book discusses things that are seen only occasionaly in museums. Also, he is obviously fascinated by the old semaphore signals as the vast majority of the pictures in the book are of those rather than the newer types that are in use today. He also spends a lot of time developing the history from the 1870's to the 1970's and then has a very brief chapter about the advances that the computer age has brought to bear since then. The is one small subsection on such an important topic as PTC and none on CBTC which are the two main technological deployment of the early 21st century.

Another irritating problem is the frequency of typos throughout the book. At one point I was totally confused as to whether the signal protecting a grade crossing of old was called a wigwaG or wigwaM since both appeared interchangeably in the same paragraph.

The layout of the text was also rather confusing with some concepts being given after descriptions of how they were used. I had to look in advance of my reading for the technical diagrams to try and figure out what he was writing about. Unfortunately, some of his diagrams are incorrect as well.

On the good side, he does cover both American and British practices which therefore explain over 90% of what is used around the world today. Being an American author it is no surprise that he focuses most of his attention on American practice. It would have been nice though, to have more of an explanation of the differnces in, for instance, the use of divergent routes vs American speed routes.

The author does provide many of the rules that are in use in various locations and points out that these are examples as each railroad and transit property essentially following their own preferences.

So my conclusion is that while this was an excellent first effort, it needs to be thoroughly revised and recast to be the premier book explaining the arcane art of railroad signaling.

Also provides a nice summary for each type of the 911 family. Unfortunately, the black and white pictures don't do the Porsches enough justice, so don't buy this book as a photo album.

The Red Book is logically organized by model year series, and within each series Paternie highlights the changes year-over-year. VIN numbers can be easily bracketed into the various production runs, and engine/drivetrain specs, suspension, wheel, and braking setups, interior trim/color combinations, and various special edition anomalies are all well presented. My own 911 search is currently ongoing, but the Red Book has helped me very quickly narrow down my choice range and verify new offerings as I encounter them.

I have four Chunky Flap books. They are all great except for "Surprise, Thomas".

Each individual page in these books is supposed to tie into a central theme. It is a stretch to say that this book follows that pattern. This book is very disjointed. The text is grammatically awkard and fails to tie each page into the party theme.

There are even a few places where the text doesn't make sense such as when the flaps open to reveal clowns and the text says "shoes" instead of "clowns". There are shoes in the picture but I think clowns are the important part of the picture and they are what fits into the party theme.

This book is a nice size to travel with and the flaps are fun to open. However, there are much better Chunky Flap books. I would recommend getting one of those and skipping this one. "Open the Barn Door" is particularly good.

Surprise Thomas! is a great little book

My son Tommy loves this book. Its small size is just right for him to carry it around with him as a security item, I guess. But I've read it to him so many times, and he still loves it. It's been taped and retaped due to so much handling, but that's OK with him. Lots of fun flaps which he loves to open. A great book!
