I am a novice learner, but this book was a recommendation from a dear friend who is a PhD in Aerospace. The title has never disappointed when it comes to finding facts. The treatment on Bernoullis principle and the lift geenration and air foil design is delightful to go through. I couldnt understand the interplay of Angle of Attach and Speed and lift, from even the stick and rudder title. Excellent conceptual treatment for a class of books which are geared to be operator's manuals.

Bob Gardner's 'The Complete Private Pilot' was in depth, informative, and interesting, as well as easy to understand. This is the type of book you can pick up before you ever step foot into an airplane and comprehend it cover to cover. My instructor suggested the title and assigned two chapters before every flight, but that first evening I read 7 of the 15 chapters! Mr. Gardner gave me the extra confidence I needed to sit in that left seat and I'm here to thank him for it.

Concepts are not well conveyed in later chapters...have to reread to get what he is try to get at. I own a cherokee but found Cleared for Takeoff, a "cessna book", easier to read. The information is very good but could be explained in simpler terms. If you fly a high wing use the Cessna book and cd's....if you fly a low wing this is a good reference but sometimes tough reading.

Most Thomas fans know the story of the race between Thomas and Bertie. This book simplifies the story and has easy to read large print. My young Thomas fan pulls this book off the shelf first every day. If your child likes Thomas he'll want to learn to read this book.

"It is a big day in the train yard. `Let's get ready!' says Thomas the Tank Engine. Swish, swish. The train yard is ready." -From the book
Thomas and the other trains are very excited today because children are arriving
for a school trip! However, Thomas has work to do on his branch line.
He hurries through his tasks so he'll be able to transport the children, but then encounters a series of delays-including a broken down Bertie the Bus. What will Thomas do? How will the children arrive safely?
Thomas and the School Trip (also called The Great Race) is a Step 1 Book (Step Into Reading) geared to children in Preschool to Grade 1. The script is quite large, and the language is simplistic to help beginner readers.
Unlike many Thomas the Tank Engine stories, especially the ones geared to older children, there is no taunting or rudeness among the engines. Everyone cooperates and helps each other.

This is a great resource. I had been searching for a good bok to help me outfit my garage into a race shop. Most of the books out there on this category are more feng shui and organized oriented (not really what I was looking for). This books helps with overall layout, equipment reccomendations, and useful weblinks to help with your project. It even has some cool garage projects as well. Definitely worth buying and keeping!

My grandchild is 8 yrs old, and Autistic, this is an excellent source for preparing a child , of what they will realistically experience, while riding on an airplane for the first time..... Right down to the bump that sounds when the landing gear come down for landing... Very detailed and covers everything from arriving at airport to the seats, safety, flight attendants.... Worth every penny

I have flown with my daughter several times, but we're flying again in June and she will be a week away from two years old. Since I'm also taking my infant son (he'll be nine months), I thought I should do as much as I could to prepare her for the plane trip... you know, she's much more inquisitive now, and much less likely to accept "pat" responses for her questions! This book is great! We've already started to read it, and she loves all of the sound effects that it calls for! It talks about all of the noises, and things that happen on the airplane, so by the time we get there, we should (hopefully!) be able to read the book and recognize what's happening. I especially love that at the end it shows the little boy running to his grandmother. Since that's where we're headed, it's helped to make it more real for her!
Great book, definitely recommend for toddlers and above... really a book that grows with the child.

This is such a great book! The illustrations are bold and colorful, and the text is simple but encourages a lot of play and interaction during the reading of the book. The text has a nice rhyme and rhythm, and actually gives a straight-forward explanation of what are all those sounds you hear on the plane, in only a few words!
My two-year-old loves this book -- he "reads" it to himself, and to me. (He has it memorized.) The noises that are part of the book make this story accessible to very young children. The book really draws a child into participating in reading, rather than just asking us to read it to him.
I would recommend this book to anyone with pre-school age children, especially if they are interested in airplanes or machine noises.

The Photos Are Just Fine....

Review Date: 2008-08-27
I just received my copy of this book and I don't find anything wrong with the photos like many other reviews posted here. This is my second Haynes book, the first one is Honda Civic 1984 thru 1991 which I have used extensively for my '89 Civic Wagon 4WD. I used it to do some major maintenance work and the photos were worse than this one. I also supplemented that with an official manual and additionally looked up things I did not quite understand on the internet. I look forward to using this manual in the same way - and if I do decide to get as involved in maintenance as with the Civic I would probably spring for the official Honda manual as well for $75. My experience with the official manual for the Civic Wagon is that it was obtuse at times compared with Haynes which is more down and dirty. The paper is recycled newsprint of a slightly lower grade than the printing for the Civic manual of a few years ago, but so what it will help soak up and camouflage the oil smudges better than white bond paper. This is not a poetry book, it's a car repair reference manual - just buy it and learn - you will have no regrets, especially for this price.

This book is not for the novice. You will need some background in fixing cars to use this book. I agree with some of the other reviews that the pictures are of poor quality which is why you will need some experience in doing some of the repairs but compared to what Honda charges for their book, I'm happy with this. Consider the savings though, one screw and about $20 in transmission oil and I don't have to pay the $80-$100 every one else charges to change it for me. I bought 4 plugs for $48 and the dealer wanted to charge me $150 total and the plugs were at $25 each with them. Bottom line, if you have some experience working on cars and are good at asking questions when necessary, this book can still save you hundreds to thousands of dollars in general maintenance at a shop
6/15/08 UPDATE!!! The book is a little more accurate than the dealer's computer. The dealer and my local Kragen both swore that my car used Iridium #6994 but make sure you know which model of Accord that you have. I had kept telling them that mine is the 2003 Accord LX SULEV model and it uses the #6774 type for NGK. The guy at Kragen kept telling me that I could use either and the dealer service said to use the one that is required and they are not interchangeable. The dealer's parts dept. had to look it up by vin to confirm the correct plugs. I finally returned the one's that I got from my local Kragen and lucky enough, Amazon had the right parts for my car. A word of caution; the specifications for cars of today are more precise. Any time someone tells you that you can put any part or switch parts on a car, research everything. If they do not sign something that they will be held fully responsible for what they are saying, do not trust them. We are no longer talking about something as simple as different oils, these cars are monitored by computers now and if you put the wrong part on the car, you could really do some damage to either the motor or its computer systems. do you really want to be pay for the damage because of some ignorant car parts dealer says either will work?

I purchased this manual to gain insite into issues I have with my car's navigation system. The topic is not mentioned in this book. As a matter of fact, the identification or location of the elements that make up the system is not covered by the book at all. As I suspect the problem is a matter of interconnections, this most easy and trivial presentation of this information is lacking, making the book useless for my immediate needs.

Like the other reviewers I found the photos in this manual unacceptable. First the paper it's printed on is some horrible recycled junk that is only fit for text. Second the black and white photos (all are B&W) almost all have poor lighting and contrast. They may have looked good on the computer when they were editing it but by the time they were printed cheaply on cheap paper they are completely unacceptable. There also aren't enough photos in some cases. They show you a close up of something but you have no idea what general region the item is located.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, this manual doesn't have the highest quality pictures (similar to black and white newspaper), but it's not terrible, either. The pictures aren't razor sharp, but you can still see what's going on.
While the manual gives some good step-by-step instructions, it helps to know a few things about car maintenance and have some confidence in your own ability to begin with.
I've used this as a reference for some basic maintenance tasks, and all-in-all, it's good to have around. If you're going to do car maintenance, for $15, just get it. It pays for itself after one use, even if it serves as a secondary source of information.
Personally, my method is to use a combination of online research (some sites have good pictures) as well as this manual.
When I approach a particular task I've never done before, I first read what the manual says a few days in advance. I think it over carefully, look up some websites with pictures and variations of the instructions, visualize what needs to be done in my head, and then I get the parts I need and perform the actual work.

I just wish there was more information on the dual jet. I race an IMCA Hobby Stock and we are required to run an OEM 2BBL carb and finding tuning tips and performance ideas for them is almost impossible. There is some info in here on them and it is the best I have found.
That being said I run Qjets on my street cars and this book is awesome and loaded with info and tuning tips for what is probably the most tunable carb ever made.

Rebuilding a Rochester can be a little intimidating. Let's face it, you can't successfully work on something that you don't understand. If you read this book before you begin, you will understand what the function is of every part that you'll see on your Qj. If you've rebuilt a few Rochesters before and need to fine tune a Quadrajet for a performance engine, this book will answer most all of the questions that you might have.
Roe does an excellent job discussing carburetor theory. He shows clear, large photos of each carb circuit. The choke system on a Quadrajet can be very complex, so I've found myself pulling this book off the shelf time and again and using the excellent illustrations to figure out just how the linkage is supposed to go. He also included a helpful section on building for performance, and fixing idle problems associated with long duration camshafts.
This appears to be the later version of this book. Therefore, it also contains tips on rebuilding the dreaded "CCC" or feedback carb, also know as the electronic Quadrajet. The first version had more information on the 4GC and 2G carbs, but there is still some information provided on each.
I would like to point out one area that I disagree with the author about. Unless you are doing a concours restoration, avoid the 1965 - early 1967 Quadrajets. First of all, the pressure regulated fuel inlet valve (a deviation from a normal needle and seat) is unavailable. Most people won't even know what you are talking about when you mention it. A conversion kit to convert to a conventional needle and seat is included with most rebuild kits, but Roe recommends avoiding these. Secondly, it appears that the "issues in the field" that he mentions, were probably engine fires. Not something that I want to take a chance with.
Roe's work on Rochester carbs is important because the Rochesters, especially the Quadrajet, are vastly underated. There is a very good chance that you could run a Quadrajet on your vehicle and gain fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. In this day and age, that is no small consideration. On a 327 I've run three Quadrajets (#7045263, 7043250, and 7029207) against an out of the box fresh Holley 6619. The best Quadrajet, which happened to be new also, beat the Holley on an identical course by about two miles per gallon with no perceived loss of performance! My motivation to run the Quadrajet came largely from Roe's book. If you would like to read more about the Quadrajet - Holley comparison, type the carburetor numbers and Holley into a search engine.
Having read just about everything in print regarding Rochester carburetors and having rebuilt somewhere between fifty and one hundred Quadrajets over the last twenty years or so, I strongly recommend this book. In short, if I was looking to buy a book on Quadrajet carbs, this is the book I would buy. Roe does the builder a huge service with the many photos he uses to accompany the text. He also gives excellent tips on how to handle some of the more difficult tasks involved when rebuilding a Quadrajets as well as things to look for when troubleshooting. You will hugely increase your chances of a successful Quadrajet rebuild if you read this book first.

This book is excelent, starting with basic explinations of how carburetors work, moving on to detailed instructions on how to rebuild, tune and modify for performance or economy Rochester carburetors. A must for the GM HotRodder.

This book did not provide the basic tuning I was looking for. This book provide good technical information on carborators and modifications. Doesn't tell me how to adjust things like mixture, speed, choke and vacuum related stuff.
