Great descriptions and photos, crude maps

Laurence Parent is a well-known photographer - his photos illustrating this book are superb (wish there were more) and his descriptions of these drives in New Mexico are great...the maps are crude but serviceable. They are better than the very rough ones in his Hiking New Mexico, though...I've driven almost all the routes described and got my money's worth many times over - the book is well-used and always with me on my New Mexico trips.

Great book. No games. to the point and easy to follow. It also happens to be the only current book out there. Other than this I have had to look up old Husky manuals, Brad lackeys book, Ake jonsons the technique of motocross , among others that are 20-30yrs old. It is great that the only book out there is pretty good. Like all training books the real test is if you really do what is prescribed.

Exactly what every sextant owner needs to know

Excellent reference and maintenance manual. Has a permanent place in my navigation kit. Wish I had read this before buying my sextant, although, I most likely would not have understood it all without a sextant in my hand. Everything from alignments, checks, adjustments, cleaning, maintenance... even tips and tricks on taking sights- priceless! This, with Buckley's video, and you'll be plotting your position in no time.

How to read signts--Nowhere in the handbook

Review Date: 2007-09-05
The most important use of a handbook is to tell you how to read sights taken by the sextant. That, you cannot find here; thus the 1 star.

To be fair, there are 2 attempts at this, but by way of captions to figures or drawings. The first is Fig. 2-3 at page 41. The supposed reading is 29* 42'.5. The 29* is easily shown by the arrow pointed to the scales in the arc; and so is the 42" indicated in the micrometer drum. But how can you tell .5 minutes from the vernier?

The second is Fig. 7-4 at page 129 that demonstrates index error corrections for "on the arc" and "off the arc" index errors. Again, the "minutes" portion of the readings are easy, but that for fraction of "minutes" is pure guess work.

The handbook should have devoted an entire section to correct reading of the sextant.

This book is a necisity for anyone that wants to sail beyond the coast. It has excelent advice on the use adjustment and purchasing of your primary navagational aid. Yes I know you have a gps (genuine piece of ) you must be able to find your way without it.

This is not a book that will teach you how to use a sextant. What it will do is give you an appreciation for the evolution of the instrument and its care and feeding. And you should definitely read it if you're planning to go shopping for a sextant to complement your GPS.

The Sextant Handbook, by Bruce Bauer

Bauer -- no, not Jack Bauer, and Bruce isn't his brother -- is an ex-Navy man and often it comes through his writing, which sets the books mood and tone. If you've battled with self-learning celestial navigation (as I am) you'll appreciate the beginnings of the book, and it IS more readable and understandable than much of what I've been through before. The second edition is dated 1992; the pricing he gets into on used sextants is worthless; his seemingly complete disdain for plastic sextants (I have a Davis Mk. 25) is pretty clear as well. Nonetheless, this is pretty clearly written, and in many cases explained theory/math that I was unable to grasp in other instructional books. I've still yet to make a correct sight, but I'm getting closer all the time!

The bright illustrations are perfect for young children and the amount of words on the page is appropriate as well. The sentences are not complex, yet they introduce useful vocabulary that is easy to connect to the pictures. Children learn different types of big working trucks, such as backhoe, snow plow, combine, plow, etc. My 3 year old grandson has me read it over and over. It is obvious that we will soon own the complete series!

The best find in a yard sale ever!!

When my son was 12 months old, we had a small bookshelf of books we bought from a yard sale. He would constantly pick out THIS ONE no matter where in the shelf we placed it. We would read it to him on request sometimes seven times a day, we sometimes even hid the book!! He has loved this book ever since we began reading to him. I have this book memorized and sometimes I recite it when we dont have the book and he is fussy. The book is easy to read, basic one sentences on each page with big colorful, well-illustrated pictures that are great for pointing out various things, even shows a "red" or "yellow" fire engine! Tells about hoses, pumps, and the differences between ladder trucks vs. pumper trucks as well as fire engines from boats. Very informative, yet short. This book is great to read to any age from birth to at least 3. We love it so much, we bought a second "just in case". It has sparked my 2 yr old son's love for Fire Engines to date!!!

I borrowed this book the first time I ventured into the automatic tranny. I've since built 4 of them! This is by far, THE best information for the DIY'ers! The statement below saying it's not a step-by-step how-to is not accurate. It does involve alot of theory and what-not, and it does go into hi-po mods, but it certainly is a step-by-step manual that covers most years of builds.

READ IT FIRST completely before you dive in to the rebuild!

Highly recommended, and I'm buying myself a copy now (since the owner of the one I borrowd wanted his back!).

This is an excellent book and how to make one of the best automatic transmissions ever made, even better. However I recomend doing at least one standard torqueflite rebuild before venturing into some of the modifactions that are shown in the book. The torqueflite is one of the easist automatics to overhaul and a very durable transmission. Information is this book is meant for people with some experience with this transmission.

This book is a huge asset to those who work on these and rebuild them. Years worth of technical information is compiled and shared in this book. Good torquflite mechanics may be pretty easy to find, but finding one with that has all the knowledge in this book are not.

The only book of its kind

I don't know what this last comment was all about but I think the book was awesome. I have never been able to find another book that even comes close to this book.

The book will not rebuild your transmission...if you think it will you are mistaken. But if you are mechanical and you would like to try and build the trans yourself ...you would be mistaken if you didn't have this as a reference while you were doing it. OR if you just wanted to know about the operation of the trans and how it is supposed to work ...this is the book

However if you are looking for a great reference on what and how to build a transmission this book is the way to go. I had to buy the book for a friend when I was helping a friend with his car. I didn't know much about these units and I thought the book was a great reference. There are no other books of its kind available

When looking for shipping data, or in doubt about a definition or a topic, go to Maritime Economics first. The data are all in need of updates. And for this, the quickest update will be had from the Clarkson Shipping Review and Outlook, which is updated semi-annually. Also don't forget to check out the freebies on the Clarkson website.

Clearly, we all await a newer edition.

Maritime Economics by Martin Stopford is not only the most comprehensive and understandable introduction to the world of shipping but today also a "must have read" for newcomers to both the shipping and vessel finance industries. Well written, close to real life practice. Just read it and get convinced

Very good content marred by poor editing
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-04
A small number of reviewers were impressed by this work and that accolade is understandable and, for the most part, well warranted. I found Mr. Stopford's book was a comprehensive and detailed discussion of the arcane field of maritime economics and finance. I believe that anyone interested in this field, particularly maritime attorneys, ship financing brokers, maritime finance department representatives, ocean carrier finance departments, and other players will find it very useful. However, I regret that I cannot give this work five stars. The volume I purchased contains far too many spelling and grammatical mistakes, no doubt due to poor editing by Routledge. These spelling and other errors are not just small mistakes that can be overlooked. There are far too many distracting errors that greatly undermine the usefulness of the book. At times, I found it very difficult to even follow the book's lessons because spelling and grammatical errors made it hard, if not impossible, to determine what lesson Mr. Stopford was trying to impart to the reader. It's a shame such a good book's lessons were marred and undermined by such shoddy editing.

Review Date: 2006-11-20
The book is almost four hundred pages long, but most of that is pictures
and the type is pretty big. So, you can probably finish the book in a
couple of sittings.

I'm pretty familiar with the BMW story, and I did not find many inaccuracies. The book is written from a European perspective. So, torque is given in N m instead of in lb ft. And money is listed in
DM, pound sterling or in Euros, but most books on BMW are written from
European point of view.

I will say that the copy editor probably was not very interested in the
subject matter or familiar with BMW. So, there are a few mistakes
in the text, but all in all the book was thorough and comprehensive.
