The paper version of this book was my brother's favorite when he was little. This was a real disappointment! There are not many pages. There is nothing interactive. And there is no surprise party in a big tree at the end. Add to that, the pictures are faint and not likely to hold up to washing. Save your money. Get the real Seuss version of this book when your child is older.

This book is an all-time favorite of my daughter's. My husband and I read it too my daughter so much that we have the entire thing memorized. We recite in the car, while shopping and anywhere we are. I don't really know what mesmorizes her about it, but it has been a lifesaver for us. I highly recommend these Bright and Early Board Books.

My review of "Traffic and Highway Engineering" posted March 31, 2003 was mistakenly attached to this Newer "Revised" Edition of the text. The original review, for an earlier version-ISBN: 0534387438, was left while I was an undergraduate student of West Virginia University's Civil Engineering program.
I am not familiar with this Revised Edition and therefore cannot comment on it. Thank you Dr. Martinelli for pointing out this error.

Errors in both text and involved mathematics make this book a horrible waste of my money. I see this as, "lets fix one error on each edition, and continue selling the heck out of it to university students." Well, at least West Virginia University will no longer use this one.

As the transportation professor at West Virginia University, I take issue with the review from Braxton Lewis (one of my former students). This book does not have errors and we have been using it at West Virginia University for 12 years and will continue to do so.
The book covers all the major concepts needed to prepare students for advanced courses in transportation. Each chapter is well-written and gives just the right level of detail and technical content.
One very nice feature is that the book includes the charts, tables, etc from the desigh guides where appropriate. This way, the concepts are presented cleanly without students having to fumble through the various codes and design guides as they try to learn the concepts.

My son is 2 and loves Thomas, so I picked this up for him- he loves it!! The story is a little short, but my son loves all the flaps. Most lift-the-flap books we own only have one flap on each page. This one has several, and he gets excited every single time he lifts one to reveal what hides beneath.
The book is sturdy: board book material with glossy pages that can be wiped off. The flaps are thin, though and can be easily torn by overzealous toddlers.
It's good Thomas fun and if my son is happy, so am I!

My little one loves Thomas (who doesn't?) so we decided to give this a shot. It's ok. THere isn't much of a story, and he really likes Thomas stories. Pop up books are fun till the kids rip them apart. So a good chocie for die hard Thomas fans, but not really all that exciting overall.

For Thomas fans this is a good resource of stories and excitement. I am the parent of three-year-old triplets (two girls and one boy) and all really enjoy these stories. (Our son loves the book while the girls just like it a lot.) The book has been very useful as a tool to help everyone settle down for story time. They are much more likely to come and listen quietly when a "Thomas Story" is part of story time.
We have not found the picture to text ratio to be a problem (as mentioned in some reviews). The children really enjoy looking ahead in the story to the next picture and trying to guess what is going to happen next. The book, however, may not be suitable for children much younger than three.
The stories are a little old fashioned in their vocabulary and presentation, but I think that that is part of the appeal of the entire Thomas franchise. The stories should probably be read in order (at least the first time through) since the later stories often refer back to some earlier occurrence.
The binding of the book appears to be good quality and the paper is heavier and more durable than in a typical book. There is even a ribbon to use as a bookmark. Overall, it makes a very nice package.

I bought this book without "research". After I received the book, I found there is little pictures in the book. So I thought my 3-year-old will not be interested since he cannot read. Surprisingly, my son loves it. He asked me to read it as his bed time story. He seems to be able to tell which story he wants me to read from just 1 or 2 pictures.

These are not the railway series stories. They have been re-written to go with the 'Thomas & Friends' franchise. Rev. Awdrey's introductory notes have been rewritten, too.
We bought this book to replace ours when it wore out from being read so often, but we will have to return it, since it is not the book it claims to be. The Fat Director/Fat Controller has been replaced by 'Sir Toppam Hat' and the trucks are now freight cars.
If you are looking for 'Thomas & Friends' stories, then this will probably be fine for you, but if you wanted to read to your children the stories that Rev. Awdrey wrote, be aware that these are not it. You can find them here:Thomas the Tank Engine: The Complete Collection (Railway Series)

Purchased this book for instruction in entry level Transportation Course, to which it seems basically well suited. The book however suffers from chronic poor editing of the charts and graphs, poor layout of some charts, such as the motor carrier unit cost chart, and the chart detailing the quantities of foodstuffs consumed in New York. I would let this go if it occurs once, but lack of quality control in these areas comes through more than that. A good entry level text with good scope. I will have to fill in the gaps to assure understanding.

I am using this book as a research and knowledge base for my pending Plug In Electric Vehicle (EV)project. I am converting a 1992 Mazda MX-3 to a plug in fully electric auto.
This book is the best place to begin, it conceptualizes the whole environment surrounding the need for conversions providing historical back ground, economic understanding, and environmental impact information. Although the book was published in the early 90's it's predictions of the future for energy dependance and economic turmoil are right on. The Books prime function is as an excellent technical reference on the "how to" of EV conversions. This book goes into great detail about chassis selection, energy calculations, motor and component selection, range and speed expectations, and gives many examples, tips and techniques to use in building an EV.
This book also goes through from beginning to end a conversion of an auto conversion (a light pick up truck) from internal combustion engine powered to plug in electric powered. It is impressively simple to do and this book shows you just what to do. It also provides a great amount of contact information for parts suppliers and businesses already engaged in the conversion market place.
So if your sick of paying high fuel prices, want to do something personnally to reduce the effects of human impact on the environment, or are an engineering weenie who wants a fun and cool project to obsess over then pick up this book and start today!
Have Fun and Good Luck!

A good place to start if you prefer to look at paper vs. the computer screen. Much more & better info available on the internet.
Does cover the basics - what exactly is involved in a conversion, batteries, controller, charger, motor & the "extras" - main contactor etc.
Others complained about too much math, but I found it was too basic to make any engineering decisions or judgments.

I read the book because I was interested in converting a car. At times, it became waaay more technical than I bargained for. But it gave me the confidence to go ahead with my project.
I later learned that what I wanted to build was going to be so expensive, that I would not be able to afford it. This led me to see the book on a different light. For example, I would have liked it to be more specific info on the ranges and speeds one could get with a certain system. I did not find that... maybe I skipped it when I blew off the extremely technical info.
But other than that I thought the book was AWESOME. I would not recommend anyone to start a project like this without first talking to people who have done it already. (That is how I found out that I was being too ambitious).
I have not converted a car yet, since I decided to wait until batteries get better so I can get the range and speeds I need. But when the time comes, I going to pick up this book again. This puppy is NOT going to the used-book bookstore.

We just picked up this book today after going to the dump and my son just loves it. The spirit of the original stories is still there while the artwork is slightly more crisp and detailed. I look forward to reading the other new stories!

The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' "Journey Through Space" isn't actually about space travel. It's about the places one can travel to in the Star Wars universe. It offers a tour of the major planets of the saga. The tour includes visits to the most obvious planets like Corusant, Naboo, and Tatooine. In addition, the books takes the reader to Geonosis, Dagobah and Kashyyyk. The scope is actually broader than planets per se since it includes the forested moons of Endor and Yavin 4. Most locations include a text box that shares a tid-bit of Star Wars trivia. The scope includes the entire saga. The illustrations were mostly lifted from all six films with some additional stills from the Lucas archives. While the pictures are high quality, the writing is also good. This new series has books for most levels of elementary readers. Given that most destinations earn a two page spread with about three sentences, this title is best suited to readers on a second grade level. "Journey Through Space" offers an exciting bibilographic tour of the galaxy's most interesting places.

This is a great book for kids who love trains! My younger four year old sons love reading it with me and my older six year old son likes looking through it independently. The pictures (photos) are interesting and there is great information all through the pages.
Typical DK, excellent photos!

As with all DK books, the pictures are awesome. If you have a train lover, he/she will love this book. And again, DK's books have thick pages so small hands won't easily wreck the pages. Can be for the younger to just look at the pictures, or as my son who just turned 7, loves to read it as well.

We got this from Santa for Christmas, because my (almost) 3 year old son loves seeing the Shinkansen (Japanese bullet trains). We read this book at least 3 nights a week, and he's fascinated with all the parts of the trains that I point out as we go along. He may be a bit young to understand how all of them work, but this book definitely helps increase our fascination. It's really great to find out how the trains evolved, and where they're heading in the future. And Dad is into it, too -- especially when they describe the speeds of these over 50 different kinds of trains!
You can be any age to be a train lover, and this is a great book to pique the interest. DK, please keep making these awesome books!

We (Santa) got this book for my 4 1/2 year old and what a hit. The quality is that of a DK book, not to be surprised. The colors are great and the pictures are just awesome. He will continue to love it when he learns how to read. A big hit, especially for the price.

My two year-old son absolutely loves these; as soon as he finishes one, he wants to read another. They're fun to read, with a nice rhythm, and the vocabulary page is a plus. Maybe it's that I'm mainly familiar with baby books on transportation that have little more than captioned pictures, but I really enjoy that these books have real content to them, even as short as they are. I'd recommend them without hesitation for any toddler, truck-obsessed or not.

Both my daughter (2) and son (4) love this entire series. They're also among my favorites out of all the books they own. Beyond the fact that each book is written on a topic that fascinates kids (cars, planes, diggers, etc.) they are also incredibly intelligently written. And they're fun! They have a great rhyme and meter (which is great for children), but they also pack a lot of great facts and things you can discuss with your kids as you go through each page. Some children's books annoy me when they call things by made-up 'baby talk' names and don't use correct terms. This series doesn't do that. The final page goes back through some of the things the kids saw on the earlier pages and gives their names and a brief description of what the item does. My son loves to point at the items and then tell me what they do.
We're currently using Roaring Rockets as my son's bedtime book. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it. I would recommend every book by Tony Mitton does.

the fire engine book five times. I've only had the series a few weeks and we've been through at least half of them many times. Thumbs up.
Each book even has a vocabulary at the end and I learned a few words myself. (I didn't know that diggers have jacks to keep them immobile, for example, when they are doing certain jobs.)
