This is another fine reference book from Nigel Calder! I think that this book along with a good factory type manual would be all you needed to maintain your diesel engine. I have yet to purchase a book that Calder has authored that was not worth the money.

The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it.

If you love Disney, this book is really fun. Even if you have read a lot of other books and websites about Disney, there will be things in the book that will suprise you. My husband and I found that there were lots of new things to learn. Reading the book was a fun way to add a new dimention to our disney travel. We bring it on the plane and read it to get us motivated for our next trip.

Mongello is a long time Disney World fan who has written a trivia book that will give the reader a lot of information that the typical guidebook will not. Of particualr interest to me was info on the age of some of the attractions as well as some history on popular attractions that are no longer a part of Disney World(such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Mr. Toad;s Wild Ride, etc).
My only gripe with the book is with the way it's laid out. You'll read a question on one page then have to get the answer to that question 20 pages later. It's not the way one typically reads a book. Still a very good book- 4.5 Stars.

My two year-old son absolutely loves these; as soon as he finishes one, he wants to read another. They're fun to read, with a nice rhythm, and the vocabulary page is a plus. Maybe it's that I'm mainly familiar with baby books on transportation that have little more than captioned pictures, but I really enjoy that these books have real content to them, even as short as they are. I'd recommend them without hesitation for any toddler, truck-obsessed or not.

Both my daughter (2) and son (4) love this entire series. They're also among my favorites out of all the books they own. Beyond the fact that each book is written on a topic that fascinates kids (cars, planes, diggers, etc.) they are also incredibly intelligently written. And they're fun! They have a great rhyme and meter (which is great for children), but they also pack a lot of great facts and things you can discuss with your kids as you go through each page. Some children's books annoy me when they call things by made-up 'baby talk' names and don't use correct terms. This series doesn't do that. The final page goes back through some of the things the kids saw on the earlier pages and gives their names and a brief description of what the item does. My son loves to point at the items and then tell me what they do.
We're currently using Roaring Rockets as my son's bedtime book. I don't think I'll ever get sick of it. I would recommend every book by Tony Mitton does.

the fire engine book five times. I've only had the series a few weeks and we've been through at least half of them many times. Thumbs up.
Each book even has a vocabulary at the end and I learned a few words myself. (I didn't know that diggers have jacks to keep them immobile, for example, when they are doing certain jobs.)

As with all DK books, the pictures are awesome. If you have a train lover, he/she will love this book. And again, DK's books have thick pages so small hands won't easily wreck the pages. Can be for the younger to just look at the pictures, or as my son who just turned 7, loves to read it as well.

We got this from Santa for Christmas, because my (almost) 3 year old son loves seeing the Shinkansen (Japanese bullet trains). We read this book at least 3 nights a week, and he's fascinated with all the parts of the trains that I point out as we go along. He may be a bit young to understand how all of them work, but this book definitely helps increase our fascination. It's really great to find out how the trains evolved, and where they're heading in the future. And Dad is into it, too -- especially when they describe the speeds of these over 50 different kinds of trains!
You can be any age to be a train lover, and this is a great book to pique the interest. DK, please keep making these awesome books!

I came to ground school with no knowledge of aviation. The Jeppesen text was chosen by our instructor. It is described as a comprehensive textbook that will prepare a student to take the written portion of the private pilot exam. (Jeppesen also publishes textbooks for the practical/oral exam.)
The text is divided into five parts (Fundamentals, Operations, Weather, Performance and Navigation, and Integrating Pilot Knowledge and Skills). These are subdivided into eleven chapters. Each chapter includes a summary checklist, list of key terms, and review questions. In ground school, we are covering one chapter per week in a three-hour lecture.
The chapter-end questions are a mix of fill-in-the-blank, matching, true/false, and essay. Answers and explanations are provided. For further review, Jeppesen publishes a separate Test Guide, which contains brief synopses of each chapter, and then relevant questions from the FAA's list of 900 possible multiple-choice questions for the written exam. The Test Guide includes detailed answers, explaining both the correct choice and the incorrect ones. This separate Test Guide is a valuable supplement to the Private Pilot Manual.
I trust my instructor to give us the knowledge we will need in the cockpit and for the written exam. The most significant training occurs in the cockpit, anyway. However, I am fighting with this text every step of the way.
I am reading this text from a position of no knowledge, and therefore some confusion is expected. However, I have 22 years of formal education, and have seen quite a few textbooks (mostly in the medical field).
The writing style and quality of figures are typical of a textbook written by committee with no principal author. It also contains what might optimistically be called humanizing elements, but which I find distract from the task at hand. It may be interesting to know Amelia Erhart's last words to the control tower, but it is unclear how those words relate to contemporary air traffic control.
Also, many figures are obscure or misleading For example, an illustration of Denver airport shows the skylines of Denver and Chicago floating in the sky above the airport. The two skylines are connected by a one-lane strip of pavement representing the amount of pavement used in the Denver airport.
Overall, this seems to be a popular textbook. I wish I could find something better, but it may be that no such text exists.

Overall the book was great, it gave me my pilots license but the 1 thing the book didn't do so well on was the weather section. I had trouble understanding the weather theory section so I had to refrence another book so I could learn about the weather. That's it, just the theory, the weather reports and forcast section was good.

A newfound interest in celestial navigation and all things nautical prompted me purchase this book. As far as celestial goes, the book concentrates on sight reduction by tables rather than by calculator or computer. In that respect, it's disappointing. The background chapters for navigation astronomy are pertinent to all forms of sight reduction.
I was also interested in navigational mathematics and "The Sailings". Those subjects are well represented and easy to understand.
The book is physically imposing and the depth of information is astounding. It's divided into sections, so you can cover areas of interest a bit at a time. It's easy to read - for a textbook.
If you enjoy this subject matter, this is one of the "go to" books. It's well worth the money.

you cannot go wrong with these - not too long for parents to read and kids love them. amazing how a simple book like this sparks their curiosity about airplanes and how they ask lots of intelligent questions about airplanes by reading this book. Very well done.

My 36 mo old daughter has loved airplanes since the first day she went onto one. I think by now she must have been on one 22 times as we go back and forth between the caribbean, North America and Europe. I bought 2 books to help her understand more about them, and to add variety to her library at home. It's a very good book for both boys and girls.

The publication is REQUIRED to be onboard vessels over 39 feet. Not much choice in the matter.

This is a reference book for boaters who are already familiar with the rules but need a quick and easy way to look up those rules they are less familiar with.

Navigation Rules is a must have for any responsible boater. Until licences for boat "drivers' becomes a law, every one must take responsibility for following the rules. Navigation Rules makes this an easy task. It's clear and concise with excellent cross referencing. A must read!

I was looking for the latest copy of the Rules of the Road and I found them; exactly what I wanted. This is a must-have for Navigators, Naval deck watchstanders and 3rd Mates.

I bought this book as a gift after a review in Wired. It has major routes, and large area pictures of main land features and discussion of the routes. I wish it had more pictures, more analysis, and and more blowups of the land features. Perhaps looking at the images by computer on the CD (which comes with the book, and which is a copy of the book) would allow zooming in on features in more detail (which I haven't tried). I was a little disappointed in the book expecting even more discussion and analysis of 'what one sees from air'. Most of what was pointed out I already knew. However, my spouse has taken the CD on several trips and hasn't complained.
The pictures are still great.

I'm so surprised by the poor reviews. First, this book is definitely not meant for the coffee table. It is a travel guide of the very finest sort. It is designed to be used in-the-field (or, rather, above it) to orient air travelers to the views outside their window and it does so with aplomb. But it does so much more than that. The authors skilfully synthesize a history of earth's natural features with human history and demographic data. In addition to locating rivers and valleys and mountains and seas, it points out the contrast in urbanization and crop colors on the US/Mexico border, identifies Fermilab, windfarms, and the Atlantic City boardwalk. It also interprets the impact of forest fires and forest pests, and describes things like center pivot irrigation. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written and does an excellent job illustrating the remarkable relationship between humans and geography. I can't wait for my next flight.

Got this for my father-in-law and grandfather for Christmas - both of whom are former pilots. They especially enjoyed reading about things they had flown over but never known about. The entire family enjoyed the great photography, descriptions, and the CD-ROM in the back cover. We are all now taking turns looking at the CD-ROM - it's a great little perk!
Disappointed

The review I read on this book was that it was a Coffee Table book. I define a Coffee Table book as an oversize book with lots of excellent pictures and a little bit of writing. This book fails on all 3. It is half the size (no problem). The pictures are small and lack sharpness, and there are way more pages filled with writinig than pictures. It may be an interesting read, but that's not what I purchased it for.
There is a CD that comes woth it. I have not seen it, but it may be it's redeming grace.

The idea is excellent - what, exactly, am I flying over right now? Selecting the most traveled air routes in the country is a great way to constrain the scope to a manageable effort. Unfortunately, this is a great idea that is very poorly executed.
For starters, the routes are very confusing to follow as they often have alternate paths. Just show me what LA to New York looks like, don't divert my attention by diverting me to Las Vegas or Phoenix or whatever.
Second, the pictures aren't very good. It is safe to say that very few of the pictures were taken from the window of a commercial jet. As a result, the view is not even close to what you would see from your window seat (unless you regularly fly in a satellite).
Again, a great idea. And kudos for making it a low-cost paperback. But the execution is poor.
