I think this book is handy to have as a quick reference, and is a good starting point for casual research. But to consider it a "Complete Guide to All Models" is a lot of wishful thinking. I would love to have such a book, but it likely could not be contained in a single volume. When you consider all of the unique variations of the cars produced during the earliest decades of the company, as well as the different incarnations of individual cars that were given new engines, new bodies, etc., during their racing careers, you begin to see that two pages is hardly adequate to begin to cover a single model (especially in a book this size). Still, as a whole, there is a lot of good information here. It will do until something better comes along.

When I look to the picture of this book in the site, I thought that it was fantastic because of his beautiful first page. But when it arrived and i've realised that it was just a book with small picture and nothing to say about the real history of each Ferrari. i've to tell you that I'm 30 years old and I've never seen such a book.
Oh course I've also to tell you that the Amazon service was perfect.

This may be a book without fault. It's complete, easy to use, lovely to browse, and inexpensive. In the 1970s the Fitzgerald and Merit guide to Ferraris was the masterwork. It was updated a couple of times but disappeared in the '80s. Signore Acerbi has come to the rescue. Every Ferrari, including competition models, gets double-spread coverage. The left-hand page has a photo and specifications. The right-hand page has a gorgeous pen-and-ink illustrarion and well-considered, clear commentary. There is even a "Palmares" section at the back which details every major Ferrari racing victory. I've bought one for myself and four for friends. Terrific!

A good book that covers plenty of the Ferrari models over the years. Has in depth technical details about the cars and their production. I just wish it showed more real pictures of the cars, as most are just artist drawings.

In Modelling Transport, Ortuzar and Willumsen touch on a multitude of subjects related to transportation modeling. The book introduces each step under the traditional 4-step transportation planning process in a separate chapter, in addition to topics such as discrete choice analysis. The way the topics are treated is perfect for someone with previous familiarity with the subject; it would be extremely difficult to hammer out all the details of transportation planning in a single 500 page volume. I would not recommend this book to the more inquisitive reader new to the subject as -in most cases- it may not explain why things are done the way they are. That said, I would strongly recommend it as a desktop reference for someone that may need a refresher on some of these topics from time to time. I would've given the book 4.5 stars if half stars were allowed.

This book is a valuable resource for students, teachers and
researchers. The coverage is broad within the subject area,
whilst the material is both accessible and authoritative.
This third edition includes valuable extensions and updates
to the earlier ones.

I am glad to recommend this text to my students at each of
undergraduate (BEng/MEng), taught postgraduate (MSc) and
research (MPhil, PhD)levels to support their learning and
use of transport models. The book makes an especially suitable
text for transport modelling courses at MSc level.

The book describes all the basic elements of transport demand modelling in a comprehensible way, including recent developments on the different subjects. It gives detailed references pointing to the original sources and to directions for further reading. We have used this book as a main reading material for our MSc level Transport Demand course; specially for Trip Generation and Modal Split models.

I find "Modelling transport" (2nd edition) to be the best available in its field. It covers just about everything a transport modeller has to know and benefits from one of its authors being an academic researcher and the other a consultant. Both are recognized worldwide as being renowned experts, and the fact that one has an academic bias and the other a practical inclination makes the end product just about unbeatable. In recent years it has been the only reference work I have needed to consult. The title "modelling transport" makes it clear that the book does not cover economic and other evaluation techniques. I think that it would be an even better product if it did, considering the close relation between a transport model and the economic evaluation procedure which should be applied to determining the benefits of the network modifications it models. Inconsistency between the model and the evaluation can lead one to doubt the results of the latter. Maybe this point could be addressed in the third edition.

Very clear and complete, therefore extremely useful.

I frequently use Ortuzar and Willumsen book (I have used both editions) and I think it is one of the best books in this field. It gives the fundmental basics of transportation in a clear and straight-forward way. For the cloth cover edition price, it is a good deal.

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Anderson's review. I'm new to sailing and of course considering my own boat building project. I did enjoy the local descriptions in this book and meeting in the book several boat builders local to Puget Sound. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the author's internal debate at every issue. The philisophical rambling and self-loathing about his shop skills gets old very quickly. Contrary to what the cover advertises, there is no humor, especially the self-deprecating variety. I wish I had spent my money on a "How-To" book instead.

The craft of building sailboats was commonly practiced thousands of years ago; in the modern era, it is a lost art. "The Year of the Boat: Beauty, Imperfection, and the Art of Doing It Yourself" tells of author Lawrence W. Cheek's struggles as he strives to construct his own sailboat in spite of his ineptness at carpentry and even the act of sailing. A charming memoir about one man's efforts to construct a magnificent wooden vessel he could call his own (a plan that should have taken a hundred hours, but ended up taking him an entire year), "The Year of the Boat: Beauty, Imperfection, and the Art of Doing It Yourself" is a memoir that many can relate to. A top pick for community library memoir and nautical collections.

Building Boats and Character

Like any "big project," building a boat reveals a lot about who we really are, opposed to who we'd like to think we are. I think many of us understand that intuitively, if not openly.

Fortunately, for most of us, building a boat (or remodeling the kitchen, come to that) need not take on the importance of a quest, as it does for our author. We are told that building a boat is different than remodeling a kitchen, though. It's something larger, more mystical than the usual do-it-yourself project. This is boatbuilding for the Me generation. Everything becomes inflated, exquisitely personal and, at length, perfectly tedious.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not a how-to manual, but a description of how he found himself building a small wooden sailboat as a first time boatbuilder, punctuated with philosophical musings and stories of learning to sail and other related experiences. I identified completely with the author in that I followed the same path of dreaming about the Haven 12 1/2, wondering about Sam Devlin's Nancy's China, and then getting realistic and choosing Devlin's Zephyr. The book is a well-written, personal memoir and should be read by anyone whose ever toyed with the idea of building a wooden boat.

Charming story capturing a magical childhood day. Makes you think about memories of special days from your own childhood, and family that have passed away. The details that are recounted would not be remembered by an adult experiencing them. Now that entire weeks seem to fly by faster than a single childhood day, this story will bring you back to a child's view of a slower moving world. Though a bit slow compared to what adults are used to as they go through the daily routine, my 4-year-old loves the pace of this book, and dwells on the details. The 'impressionist' illustrations are captivating, particularly the 'climax' page where the moonjellies light up the sea. The final page chokes me up a bit, as the grandmother attempts to 'bottle' memories of that special day for her grandson.

This book is a wholesome family and nature oriented book for boys 3-8 years old. My son has spent countless hours playing out the theme of this book - never tiring of the many options it offers. If you have a budding oceanographer or tide-pooling enthusiast this is the book for you. Any landlocked readers can enjoy the book just as well. The book's pictures fill the pages as well as the mind with dreamy images that bring the whole story to life. The words and images are really a hand and glove that make a perfect fit. The book also models working together as a family and that children can have an important place in helping. Grandma's get a boost here too as quick and creative planners. Nigth of the Moonjellies is also a gentle reminder to save some of the present for the future, without heavy sentimentality. A great book to read if you include any aquariums in your vacations. Don't forget about Aliki's great "My Visit to the Aquarium" book.

This book touches on just about everything you might think of when you're planning your move to Canada, including buying a car, banks, public transit, temporary accommodations, the health system, different kinds of insurance, finding employment, and more. Note that this book is not for people who want comprehensive instructions on how to obtain a visa, although it has lots of good information about it.

This is an overlong tome written too obviously by a British gent, complete with quaint British prejudices.

Most of the information contained within may be new to Europeans, but Americans wishing to emigrate to Canada will not find it very useful, other than to confirm that America and Canada have very similar modes of daily life.

A better book is "How to Move to Canada: a Primer for Americans."

Content far too general to be of any real use

I bought this book as I was moving to Canada to take up a research job in a university in Ontario. I had hoped that it would guide me through some of the pitfalls associated with moving to a new country. I read it from cover to cover before I left Ireland and when I arrived, I found 99% of the information it provides is completely unnecessary. It provides no solid information for setting up health care, doing taxes, or how Canada is structured and what you can expect in terms of bureaucracy, be it in a bank, government office or just the workplace. For eg, the note in the book to bring bank references, my bank here didn't even look at them, didn't want to even. The information it does provide is useful only if you haven't worked before or you've been unconscious for the last 10 years. Waste of money!!

A great help to those wishing to live in sunny/freezing Canada

This book has proved to be an invaluable source of information about living in Canada (I split my time between Ontario and London). It covers everything you could wish to know, from the education system to buying a house, and from buying a car to the tax system. There's also stacks of information about Canada's vibrant entertainment scene and the great outdoors (of which there's a huge amount!). I can't quite understand Damian's review - the book's excellent.

A Color Catalog of American UAV's
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-15
This book was an enjoyable read about the history and development of American Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from the 1940's to present day. The book had technical details and color pictures of every American UAV - it reminded me of an encyclopedia or other reference book. While enjoyable, the book had a few quirks that I didn't like. Except for the mention of a few Israeli UAVs the book said nothing about non-American UAVs (there are quite a few). Second, the beautiful pictures often did not match up with the text. The text was talking about one UAV, but the image next to it was another. The book was kind of "dry." With a title of "Attack of the Drones" I was looking for some action and war shots - there was very little of either in this book. Instead, the book droned on for chapters mentioning individual UAVs, dates of service, technical dimensions, which UAV it replaced, and which UAV replaced it. This got boring after a while. The upside is that one can retrieve all the historical data and a nice picture of any American UAV - past or present. Overall I did like this book and recommend it to any fan of UAVs.

Great photos, a poignant story, and just enough science. It had a nice allusion (but not too graphic) about the author's efforts to end the practice of clubbing baby seals that allows the parent to use it as an avenue of discussion or not. My 5 year old daughter loved the book!

Great pictural content but technical data can be improved

As Bill Yenne emphasizes at the introduction section, the book is solely about UAV projects of USA. The book covers up to date information by the time of its creation (2004).

Attack of the Drones contains excdellent pictures of several UAVs of USA. It may be purchased just because of the picture content. But some of the pictures are not synchronous with the text, i.e. picture of a UAV may be seen a few pages before it is mentioned in the text.

The book claims to mention every project of USA (I write "claims" because I am not in a position to verify the coverage). I think more technical information could be provided, perhaps with some tables summarizing properties of the vehicles.

Although not perfect, it is certainly an enjoyable book to read, and it can be used as a reference about history of USA UAV projects.

When the United States Air Force was set up independently from the United States Army (as the Army Air Corps which fought World War II) an agreement was made that the Army would no longer have any armed fixed wing aircraft. So even though the Army has had a number of aircraft that would have been suitable for arming they were prohibited.

This has caused considerable friction, as the Air Force has concentrated its efforts on the strategic aspects with concentrations on long range nuclear armed forces at the expense of the tactical ground support that the Army needs. The Army countered with arming its helicopters because they hadn't been considered in the original agreement.

The Air Force likewise has traditionally not supported drone aircraft. After all, the way for promotions in the Air Force is to fly planes in combat situations.

The realities of the situation in Afghanistan has forced some changes in these areas. For the first time there was a wide use of drone observation craft. On occassion these drones found targets that U.S. forces wanted to attack, but by the time a piloted aircraft could arrive to make the attack, the target was gone. Over opposition permission was given to hang some smart weapons on the drones. They were extremely successful.

This book does an excellent job of describing the development of drones since the 1940's. He reports on these early attempts at creating armed drones. He further gives a good introduction on the new craft that are under development.

I have never met such a book. It is a plain pleasure to take it, sit down with a cup of tea and spend some hours (!literally!) on observing the life of those people or looking for all the hidden jokes made with the perspective, composition, citations, self references... So in fact anyone in my family is happy because of this Journey: my 3 years old son as well as my wife and me.

BTW we are Polish, so, as you can guess, there is no language barrier. Anyone on the world could take this book and just start to read and appreciate it.

Full of visual jokes, historical buildings, modern characters hidden in the crowds, famous art and buildings, childrens games, similarities from one page to another ...

The parents love it even more than the kids. It takes days to spot all the interesting things hidden in this book and it's a painless way to talk about history and art with a child. PERFECT for babysitters to use.

As in other Anno works, an anonymous Everyman is seen in each two-page textless illustration. In this book, the traveler begins his trek alone, buys a horse and rides through progressively more populated scenes -- magnificent scenes, filled with literary and artistic allusions, mini-stories, children playing, panorama and touching detail -- all at the same time! Scenes are viewed as if you were just outside the picture and about 40 feet high. The reader/viewer cannot see the details of people's faces, but much human experience and emotion is contained in small details -- children despairing after a lost balloon, flirting lovers, a mother touching her child, etc.

Your child will appreciate this work through many 'reading' levels, and you will constantly make new discoveries yourself.

Mitsumasa Anno's books are not to be missed, and Anno's Journey is a beautiful example of the author/illustrator's work.

I am so glad I discovered this book. My children enjoy telling a different story every time we open it. The fact that there are no words in it makes the children invent a new story each time, and I believe it develops their imagination better in a way, than with a storybook with pictures. I also like the art involved in this book, the minute details that the author/artist had included are adorable! I enjoy reading it myself! Each page reveals several goings-on in a small town, it is so easy to imagine yourself walking among the characters.

still a pleasure to read 20 years later
