We thought our 4 yr old train fanatic had taught us everything we needed to know about all the different train cars, but this book had a lot more knowledge for us. It's one of his favorite books, and has large photographs of trains and train cars. I think this is a must-have for any train loving kid!

How to paddle without getting lost
Helpful Votes: 41 out of 45 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-29
This book tells you what you need to know about navigation to safely paddle a sea kayak in the great outdoors.

It tells you how to read a nautical chart, how to use a compass or GPS, and how to navigate by "the seat of your pants". The book desicribes fundamental saftey issues and tells you how to avoid getting run over by large ships, trashed in tide rips, or hopelessly lost in the fog .

This book is absolutely REQUIRED reading for anyone serious about covering large distances in a sea kayak. If you paddle, get this book and read it many times!!! The material in this book has to be second nature to you if you want to be safe in "big water".

Accurate, too Complex for Quick Use

Burch's legendary book is full of information, but really is not a book I consult to renew my skills or solve a navigational problem. As an encyclopedia of navigation for small human-powered craft this book has use. It's a good read after one has mastered basic navigation from a practical standpoint. Simply too much information. Much of that contained could be edited severely and would be of more practical use. Burch is a great fact-presenter, but navigation is a subject that needs to be mastered through presentation of basic facts repeated in practical ways. Burch speaks too far over the heads of most beginning and intermediate navigators. This book didn't really make sense to me until I'd read it yearly for a number of years. Because of this fact, I only recommend it to navigation "junkies" who already have a firm understanding of all nav foundation topics.

The Bible of Kayak Navigation

The complete guide to finding your way and getting there safely. Burch, the director of the Starpath School of Navigation in Seattle, Washington, covers every topic that I can imagine is relevant to sea kayaking, including reading and using navigational charts, dead reckoning and piloting, determining paddling speed, estimating distance from a landmark, maintaining a heading while paddling in a crossing current, and tidal effects relevant to navigation. Each example is accompanied by clear diagrams which help illustrate sometimes difficult points. This book is written specifically with the kayaker in mind; it's not an adapted version of a small-craft navigation manual. Burch strove for completeness when writing this seminal manual, but also kept the layperson in mind by maintaining his clear style throughout the text. His years of teaching experience and immense navigational knowledge are obvious from reading Fundamentals. The book will take more than one read to absorb all important information and all the techniques the author decribes, but you will never need another source. This is the kayak navigation book to buy if you plan on doing any sort of ocean kayaking.

There are better books on the topic.

I purchased this book at the suggestion of a top sea kayaking coach. I should note that many paddlers consider this book the encyclopedia or "standard" of sea kayaking navigation books. The book is lengthy and appears to be comprehensive, however, I found it to be poorly organized and presentation lacking. It is a decent desktop reference on the subject, if you are looking for specific information on a sea kayaking navigation topic. It is tough to just pick this book up and learn navigation. It is really not layed out for self-instruction.

I would strongly recommend "Simple Kayak Navigation" by Ray Killan over Burch's book. It is concise, easy to understand, comes packed with excellent examples, and has just the right amount of humor.

I think my favorite thing about this book are the detailed "anatomy of a truck" drawings--"dolly wheels", air brake lines, front axel, etc. I learned the vocabulary of trucks from this book, so now my 3 year old son and I can talk about trucks more intelligently as we drive down the road. My son loves the book and never turns it down. I like reading it, too.

A great book! My 19-month old son is another second generation "Big Joe". He asks me to read this to him almost every night..and I can remember reading this book with my dad 26 or so years ago. We read all the time, but Big Joe's Trailer Truck is the only one I remember after all these years.

I, too, fondly recall having this book read to me by my father as a child. Now I'm a father, and I'm reading it to my 2 year old sons (the same copy!). The story line is simple but not patronizing, the illustrations are busy and colorful, and the kids love learning about trucks as the story unfolds. How else could a 2 year old not only know what an "air filter" is, but know that it sticks out the top of the hood to collect air?

Good for Girls too, Especially if they're Tomboys

This is an interesting little book that my girls really liked. Yes, I said girls, but they were and still are Tomboys, so it's not that unusual for them to like a book about trucks. This story follows Joe as he gets up in the morning, goes to work at the truck depot, says hello to his go-workers, gets in his truck and makes a deliver of toys to a city several hundred miles away. Joe is on the road for a long time. He works hard and deserves the rest he gets at the end of the day.

Whenever we're on the road, and we take a lot of driving trips, my girls smile at the big rigs we pass, often wondering aloud if it's Big Joe behind the wheel. I loved reading this story to my girls and they loved hearing it as they looked at Joe Mathieu's wonderful illustrations. He really makes Big Joe come life.

I loved this book as a kid 25 years ago, and now I love reading it to my 20-month old son. My son loves Joe, too, and wants to read it over and over. Joe seems like such a friendly, hard-working fellow, and he's a wonderful example for kids. The illustrations are about the best I've ever seen in a children's book, so good, in fact, I sometimes pick it up even after my son goes to bed!

We own a truck camper carried by a diesel truck. We used to stay on the highway so we didn't get stuck on a country road trying to find a service station offering diesel. But with the help of this reference, we were able to map our itinerary to take us from CA through AZ and CO ending in SD and back through MO and UT on some beautiful country roads because we knew exactly where the diesel fuel was. We were able to call ahead to some stations to confirm they'd be open if we were driving through at an odd hour. It made for a much more pleasant and relaxing adventure.

I've been buying Hayne's manuals for years and was delighted to see that they offered one for my new Harley. They feature ample photos and provide instruction for all year models, not to mention an interesting historical piece at the preface. I'd give 5 stars but I couldn't find the exact photo that I was looking for a specific problem that I was experiencing.

I have an A&P license and bought this book for my son. It is a good example of quality sacrificed to feed someone's bottom line. Illustrations and figures in this book are of such poor quality that they appear to have been reduced on a copy machine, causing important details to disappear into blotches of ink. Reference tables have been reduced to the point where they are unreadable without a magnifying glass. There is no section on welding. If this is the only reference handbook on the market, then you're stuck with it -- but I sent mine back. Don't buy it.

We bought this book for my son at 6 months. By 9 months, he was opening it, and touching the pages. His favorite is the back page where he can feel the spiky bale of straw. At 19 months now, he still enjoys turning the pages. He also has the Touch and Feel Dinosaur book in the same series by DK. If you venture into that one, just be prepared for the stickiness of the T-rex's tongue. I've seen it make several adults jump a bit. :-) All-in-all, these books encourage young children to turn pages and interact with books, and they grow with them too. My son will now sit, point and name what he sees, jabber a/b the contents, and let me read the text to him. We liked this tractor book enough for our son that we bought 2 additional copies to give as gifts to friends.

.

If you own a Sportster made in the years covered by this book, you need this book.

Buying this book and using the tools you already have (you do have and know how to use hand tools...right?) you will save a lot of money doing your own basic maintenance and some not so basic stuff. Even if you just use the manual to tell your wrench what is wrong.

This is also very helpful if you plan on customizing your ride. Mine is now a bar-hopper. It helps in selecting parts that will fit your ride, by knowing what parts are stock and what after market parts will work. Buying parts that don't fit is an expensive lesson.

Good book but with a few shortcomings

Lots of good info. Lots of diagrams and the book is broken down into chapters about specific areas of the bike and goes step by step for fixing most problems. Some good troubleshooting info. Not much info on some areas like the wiring for the lights and some things are hard to find but overall DEFINATELY worth the money. If you own one of these bikes and want to do your own maint. Buy this book.

Real Life Adventure

Review Date: 2008-04-08
I bought this book because a friend and I intend to ride from North to South America in 2018 when all our kids have grown old enough not to miss us. I really hope that we don't have to live through what Glen did but who knows what the continent will be like in 10 years? This is a brilliantly written book with lots of good information and tips for travel. The section on Columbia is well done and doesn't overdominate the story. I wonder from Ted Simon's comments in 'Dreaming of Jupiter' after meeting Glen following his ordeal, if Glen has downplayed his emotional state a little. It must have been a totally awful experince and one I doubt I could have survived. It just goes to show that it helps to be strong when attempting a journey like this but like so many things at the end of the day its all about mental toughness. I take my hat off to Glen and he has inspired me yet again to start my own adventure.

I first came to know about Glen's journey through a tv documentary on the kidnapping, if you get a chance to see it, do so, it brings to life the book in real terms.
Glen does an excellent job of describing the journey, his fears and feelings both before and after the kidnapping. It's not a "how to" book, it's an insight , in my opinion, to inner strength and positive thinking.
Great read.

While the title of the book and most of the comments focus on his stay with the Columbian terrorists, for me the most inspiring bits of the book were his descriptions of the parts of his journey through Mexico and Argentina. Now I want to visit Mexico and see if it is as wonderful a place as he described. Ditto Argentina, though it is not quite as close.

A very well-written book by a talented and very versatile author. Much more than a tale of terror. You could skip the Columbian fiasco and still get your money's worth (and then some) from this book.
