My wife, two daughters ages 14 and 16, and I are currently working through a chapter a day with this book. I read aloud the chapter and we discuss points brought up and expierences from our own marriage. It works very good for this. The chapters are not too long except for chapter 5 "Fundamentals of a Christain Marriage" which we broke into sections.

This would be a great way to hold a study with your children as my wife and I are doing, with young couples, and with singles who hope to marry one day and go the distance.

My wife and two daughters do not see any demeaning of women as a couple of the negative reviews indicated. Those two people must be seriously biased for some reason.

Highly recommended for those who want to go the distance with a life long mate!

I found this book to not only be shallow and poorly written, but also insidiously demeaning to women. Rather than focusing on the individual strengths and weaknesses men and women bring to relationships, the author focused on the weakness and instability of women. In addition, his examples and analogies were often misplaced and poorly devised... certainly not illustrative of his points or of a healthy marriage. I found the content much too general with overuse of stereotypes. My fiancee and I have read Chapman's Five Love Languages and got a great deal more out of that exercise.

Great book!!

Emotionally draining

While it wasn't a terrible read it was quite draining to read. The constant battle between Nick and Merideth was too much. Although M lied to N in the beginning N took it to another level with all his insults(in front of others too, which makes him a big jerk in my book). I wanted to see another side to N other than the violent, angry, possesive side but there never seemed to be any moments of tenderness, no moments of understanding and getting to know one another. Toward the end of the book M chases N, he uses her in the middle of a dirt road and leaves her begging and crying. After that I would have woken up and realized this guy was not a winner and has issues and it was time to runaway or at least give him a dose of his own medicine. Then all the sudden he does a 180 and is sweet and loving and none to apologetic for all he put her through and she just accepted it. The end? That was so forced.

My one major complaint...I read Too Wicked to Tame first. I liked that book so much I grabbed this one and wasn't too disappointed, just peeved that one of the secondary roles in this book was from TWTT. I am giving this a four only because it was not as good of a read as TWTT. The characters were just a bit too much, but I did enjoy it and I WASN'T disappointed (other then the aforementioned). Otherwise, I recomend this book to someone who doesn't focus on historical legalize. A bit of advice for those that focus on historical facts/legalize...if you're going to let this ruin your Historical Romance reading...stop reading Historical Romance NOW! All of it! Otherwise, just read it for what it is and ENJOY!

This author is two for two. I read her other book, Too Wicked to Tame, and then this one. I loved TWTT and was afraid Once Upon a Wedding Night wouldn't be as good. To my surprise, I liked it as much, if not better than the previous book. Sophie Jordan writes very likable characters put in some steamy situations. Honestly, some of the smallest sentences, or just a few words actually, spoken by Nick to Meredith and I'm fanning myself. I just loved the dialogue, the secondary characters were charming and, at times, funny, and I liked the story.
Another reviewer of this book questioned whether the author checked her facts. I'm sorry, but this is fiction--romantic fiction. As long as authors don't have their characters doing something totally off, like reading a book that hadn't been published until 75 years later or referring to real people who weren't around at a particular time, I don't really care if all the facts aren't completely accurate. So what if Nick couldn't have married Meredith. The kind of marriage she had certainly justified him being free to marry her and didn't lessen my enjoyment of this story.
As I said, it's romantic fiction. Does anyone really believe that every duke, earl, and viscount to be found in Regency England was 6'2", had a gorgeous face, and a physique not to be believed? I don't think so. Sometimes, a little inaccuracy isn't a bad thing.

After reading Bussen's "Simple Stunning Weddings", which was full of wonderful ideas and beautiful floral designs, I decided to get this book as well. On it's own, I probably would have really enjoyed it and found it to be useful. However, after reading the other, I found it to be filled with more or less the same suggestions and not nearly as informative or inspiring. I'd recommend getting her "Simple Stunning Weddings" instead.

Ms. Medlicott,
Please tell us you will write more about the Ladies of Covington. My friends and all the Ladies of all the small towns across the world have been entranced by the characters you have created. They are so real, so like us, so much the best of ourselves. This most recent book is even more delightful than the rest. The books in this series just seem to get better and better. Amelia, Hannah and Grace and their families and friends show us humanity with all its frailties, yet with the best we can be. This book and the others are uplifting and challenge us to think.

In the beginning, Hannah is preparing to marry Max shortly. They have a nice little wedding where they end up having the ceremony in church after all. Hannah and max had agreed at the beginning to only be married in name only so that she wouldn't have to pay taxes someday after Max was gone. But as things turn out, she is more in love with Max than she ever thought, and moves into his house.

Amelia is off doing her photography with Mike with the gallery in New York where she is the star of the exhibition with her works. She meets photography critic, Simon Blanche who has an instant attraction for her. But this time, Amelia can see right through him that he is not the man for her after he visits Covington and despises it.

Lucy Banks is still facing trial with Jerry McKorkle, the internet predator who committed some very serious crimes, one of which had been murdered. Francis Randall, the mean principal at school who hated Lucy to begin with was Jerry's mom and he never knew this until later. When a case was brought against Francine Randall for the discriminations at the school, someone was playing some vicious pranks on Russell and Emily. And when suddenly, Francine commits suicide, everything changes.

Emily and Russell are having problems with their marriage, and Emily ends up hating motherhood with her 2-year old daughter Melissa. She pawns all of the responsibilities off on Tyler her stepson, and Russell while she is all too busy with her law practice. In the end, the couple may get a divorce but will fight over who keeps Melissa.

After having a severe snowstorm, Lurina goes outside momentarily to bring in something for warming up. But in the process, she falls in the snow and thank goodness Wayne finds her and comes to the rescue before she dies from hypothermia. After this event, Lurina decides to sell off her big house and move herself into a retirment community and the ladies help her all they can. She finds that Old Man left her a big pile of money under the kitchen floor which leaves her a wealthy woman. But the sad story is that the house is destroyed in spite of Lurina's orders to preserve it.

Roger, Grace's son has moved to a new home in Salem North Carolina and is much happier than he has ever been. He now also has a new partner, Lenny. He and Grace get to be a little closer in this book, and reach more of an understanding with each other.

Hannah is about to be married to Max, but it is more of a business arrangement than an emotional event. Hannah is afraid of showing her true feelings to her prospective husband, in case he doesn't feel the same way about her. Grace seeks to balance her relationship with Bob so that she spends time with him, yet has time for her friendship with her housemates and her other friends. Amelia tries to juggle time between her life in Covington and her business in New York, and ponders an invitation to visit a friend in Maine. Add a troubled marriage and the trial of a local misfit, and the pages of this Covington book turn quickly. Joan Medlicott does her usual good job of exploring the lives and loves of her three main characters and surrounding them with interesting people and situations. This series can always be counted on for a good read.

I loved my latest visit to Covington. Life there is so peaceful and tranquil.

Hannah and Max tie the knot. An unexpected May snowstorm causes Lurina to be trapped out in the snow. She decides the time has come to move to a retirement home.

Many other adventures happen to this group of friends and family. If you have read the others in this series, you will love this book.

After reading this book I feel disappointed! I expected more! But, just like men, this book is a huge let down! It reads like Seventeen Magazine and reminds me of those cheesy jr high books like, "How to meet Boys" ( hang out where he plays sports) and "How to be a great kisser".(practice on your hand!)
Too cheesy, not funny and a waste. Then again if you are 17, go for it!

A guy comes clean and tells us girls why men behave the way they do. Why they take your number and wait 2 weeks to call, stuff like that.
The best thing is that it clears up a lot of misunderstanding between the sexes and gives clear instructions on how to make your guy genuinely happy in your relationship - which is good for everyone. it also helps weed out the self-centred losers.
I read with horror as he described perfectly a couple of exes of mine that, in his opinion, would never make good partner material and were a complete waste of my time to bother trying to have a relationship with.
Definitely worth the money!

Okay, I will say upfront that I jumped back into the dating pool after 30 years and I am looking for ways to understand the male psyche. I think the author does have a good grasp of the way that most men's minds work. Being a child of the 60's, however, I was totally turned off by the emphasis on getting men to spend money on you - and even just manipulating male friends to spend their money on you. I have no problem with paying my own way; I was looking for information on how to understand a man's perception/behavior better so that I could meet him in the middle. If you can ignore the emphasis on manipulation for greed and the lack of editing, you will learn plenty about the male mind.

I absolutely loved it!

What a traitor this author must be. Reading this I felt like I was in the guy's locker room alone with a turn coat. The language is a bit raw at times, but not obscene. It's like having an older brother warning you about stuff guys do, and showing you how they think and how to make them get all stupid over you. It was brutally honest. Of course I had to try everything out for myself, and to no surprise, these things worked. Guys for the most part are a lot easier than they let on. A wink and a smile can get you far without having to do anything you feel uncomfortable doing.

Some of what you read here may not sound like it can work, but I have had a lot of fun playing with the advice here, and as long as it works, I am happy to have hot guys doing nice things for me for a change.

Best Wedding Book I've Read

Review Date: 2008-08-17
This is a fantastic resource for the stylish bride-to-be! In an age of cookie-cutter weddings--or even worse, weddings that look like giant branding opportunities, with the bride and groom's name emblazoned on EVERTHING-- Michelle Rago's approach was like a breath of fresh air.

Rago is one of the top event planners in NYC, and she knows her stuff. I especially liked that the first two chapters are devoted to explaining her method of event planning, step-by-step. She chooses a theme, four colors, and four to six "Elements" for each wedding, and it's fascinating to watch her weave all of the details together in unexpected ways. In the beginning of the book, Michelle also walks you through the process of discovering your point of view and creating your vision, along with tips on how to handle common wedding-planning challenges.

Then she presents, in painstaking detail, ten weddings that she's designed. There are TONS of photgraphs of each wedding to illustrate her methods. For each event, she walks you through the "Four Cornerstones of Wedding Design": The Checklist, The Three S's, The Elements, and the Colors, so you really get a feel for how its done. Her experience in planning and designing hundreds of weddings means that she's able to impart a lot of valuable advice...I learned a lot about wedding planning in general from this book. I also really enjoyed the fact that Michelle has a strong point of view, and she's not afraid to speak her mind regarding what is and is not appropriate for weddings.

By the time I reached the middle of this book, my confidence had increased 100%, and I really began to feel empowered to design my own wedding and have it look like the pages of a bridal magazine. Michelle's writing style is warm and engaging, and although she's a master designer, she never talks down to her readers. The best part of the book for me was the amazing photographs of the bouquets and floral centerpieces. I am in awe of Michelle's floral design talents, and I picked up more than a few ideas to pass on to my own florist!

This book covers all the bases. I chose this based on the simplicity of it when I skimmed through it. I wasn't looking for a planner, but a book that told me exactly what steps I needed to take so I wouldn't forget anything. This book covers every detail of your wedding, breaking down every task that needs to be done. It also had lists of questions that you should ask photographers, caterers, musicians, and all the other people offering serves to you. There were also song lists, which was really neat too. This book really got me started on my wedding plans. I took this book, and typed out checks lists for each month building up to my wedding date, and it's been So helpful to keep me organized and on track. Plus its so inexpensive!!

This is a short, quick book that stays on track with all the must-haves, must-asks, and must-dos of wedding planning. You should pair this with something more flowery if you want to get into the gorgeous details of your wedding, but this is a basic essential for those of us who didn't want to forget anything! I used this to make my own checklists, agendas, plans, schedules, etc. in Microsoft Word and Excel (but you can also use the book as is).

Useful highlights: detailed budgeting, what to register for, hiring vendors (checklists and comparisons), how to run the ceremony, food, transporation, even changing your name post-wedding.

I liked getting all of this info in a quick, light-weight, small format. This should be an essential part of your wedding arsenal.

It's OK if you're completely in the dark.

This book is for someone who's really not done any research and is JUST starting out. If you've looked online and read articles, then this book might not be for you. I found a few things like questions to ask vendors helpful, but it just wasn't the end all be all.
The book's too small to really write on so if you want to use the worksheets you're going to have to copy & blow them up. Which means you're shelling out money for that and you're shelling out money for the notebook to keep them all in.
It's a good companion.

Our daughter is in a wedding and she's never seen one before so we decided to help her with books and things to let her know what's going to happen. This book seemed highly recommended, but I'm not sure if anyone really looked at it from this vantage point. The rhyme in the book is very cute, but it doesn't really ever explain what a flower girl is or does with the exception that she gets to wear a fancy dress. For an older flower girl this might be a cute keepsake, but not for her. I was disappointed with this book.

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old niece who was the flower girl in my May wedding. I gave her the book about seven months before the wedding and it quickly became her favorite book. When she and her family came into town for the wedding she brought the book with her and she had the entire thing memorized! I wrote our actual names above the characters so she would know all the members of the wedding party, which she did. I have the cutest picture of her before the ceremony in the dressing room with her in her flower girl dress reading her flower girl book. I think this book is the perfect start to teaching any little girl to be a flower girl.

When our daughter made me a first-time MOB this Christmas, she presented me with this book. While I enjoy good humor, only the James Harriot books (All Creatures Great and Small etc) had actually made me laugh out loud. Many passages in this book have had me laughing so hard I have literally cried. In addition, our execution of the Mother-Daughter Pre-Nup has saved me from unmitigated grief with my daughter about the dinner entres (among other things) at the venue she and her fiance have chosen which features nouvelle northern Italian cuisine. We're talking date sauce over pork chops and lemon zested brussel sprouts and leg of lamb with garbanzo beans here folks.

Amid a great deal of humor Leslie Milk dispenses pithy nuggets of great advice. This book would be a welcome volume especially for MOBs who have or need a sense of humor. MOGs would enjoy it too.

I orginally bought this book for my mother (bride's mother) but it was just so cute and clever that I purchased it for the Groom's mother. For Brides: It imforms your mothers of their role without hurting their feelings. My mom read it in 2 days and she said she really connected with it and her role in my wedding. But in a nice, none confrontational way.

Wedding book for mom's of brides.

This book is the best! Leslie Milk is clever, funny and extremely informative. I not only learned more from this book than the more formal bridal book I purchased but had some good laughs too. She makes such sense and covers everything you need to know. Actually my daughter read it, my husband read it after hearing my many references to it, and I ended up ordering more copies to give as gifts. This is a must have book for mom's of brides and actually brides too.
