The Pictures have beautiful colors however the subject of the pictures would give any child nightmares. The rhyming makes everything sound pretty but those rhymes are not nice. They are rude and mean. An example is:
His hot breath sprayed Miss Spider's face
With all the force he had,
He screamed, 'You will reveal his name!"
She said, "I won't, you cad!"
He turned his back and brayed, "I must
Go find and grind him into dust!
So foolish woman, be forewarned,
Spiderus Reeves shall not be scorned."
That is only two little paragraphs. I stopped reading it and explained to my children that sometimes books were not good for us to read and it was my job to make sure they had good things in their minds not garbage.
Miss Spider is now officially banned in our house.
I strongly suggest parents take the time to read the book before bringing it into your home.

Adult Reader Gives Three Thumbs UpReview Date: 2004-05-11
Even if you think the topic is a little too sensitive for your kids at this time, I recommend holding onto it until your little ones are ready -- or just buying a copy for yoursef. Because this book is excellent in all regards. It is well written, the plot is clear and funny, and the illustrations are...well, absolutely stunning. I picked this book up for myself. Once in a while, I will sit down, and literally put my fingers on the pictures. They are works of art. I like to read sections aloud, because the rhyming structure is so pleasing to the tongue.
There are very few children's books that still hold my attention. In fact, I would say that this book is a keeper for all ages. And when you decide your little one is old enough for the contents, I am sure he/she/they will delight in this superb book.

I, for one, had very little experience in more formal dining situations upon graduating from school. This CD was just what I needed to get myself up-to-speed. It is well-organized and well-presented, covering a number of very specific situations that convey the elements of common sense and consideration that underlie all etiquette.
The author thankfully avoids spending time on how to arrange the seating at a state dinner. What he offers is practical, usable advice on the types of real social interactions that occur in all kinds of business. A very useful CD and well worth the price. Definitely five stars.

One of the better magsReview Date: 2008-03-13
Like the regular RS mag, this one is full of great info and will be especially useful if you are planning on doing a lot of the wedding planning work yourself, or you're DIYing some of the basic stuff (invites, favors). It got me thinking about issues I would not have thought about.
A good read along with Bride mag if you're in the planning stages and looking for ideas. The price was a bit steep and the wedding section of their website could be better designed or more interactive (like The Knot). All in all, not bad and would recommend.
Great start to planning your wedding... or a great reality check if you are already planningReview Date: 2008-03-10
I thought it would be no big deal to plan a small wedding, but then my budget started to spiral out of control and I was freaking out over details. Then I found an ad for "Real Simple Weddings" in a current issue of "Real Simple", and now everything is fine! Instead of overwhelming me like other books and magazines, "Real Simple Weddings" reminded me that there is no "right" way to do things and that I don't have to do everything suggested. It lays out what needs to be taken care of, but also what is just fluff and can be tossed aside if not important to the couple or if it isn't in the budget.
Don't buy this magazine thinking it is going to be like other bridal magazines. The only advertisement you will find in this magazine is for Crate and Barrel at the start of every chapter (yes, chapters!). This magazine is formated like a book (with an index!!), and I find it to have more valuable information than most wedding planning books. There is a wedding dress guide, flower guide sorted by color and season, pictures, wedding day details, real couple storied, info on about everything a wedding needs, and every chapter ends with a "question and answer" section.
Buy this magazine if you are just starting to plan your wedding, or you are in a much needed reality check. I don't regret the money spent on this magazine. By far it has been my best wedding book/magazine purchase! and i have bought A LOT of them.

Great behind the scenesReview Date: 2008-08-09
The book's divided into 3 parts:
Part 1 - Land of the Living
Part 2 - Land of the Dead
Part 3 - Going Upstairs, The Illustrated Story
You know those behind the scenes videos from movie DVDs? This book is essentially that, except in written form.
Part 1 talks about how the story was conceived, the people involved in making the movie, project development, and the challenges to handling stop motion animation. There's a lot on character design, especially the back stories that determine who they are, and how they were created physically. There are very interesting details you'll learn in the creation process. Below's a quote on controlling facial movements:
"By inserting an Allen wrench into a socket in the ears of the puppets, the animators could control various facial movements. If you put the key into the left ear and turn it in one direction, it would make the puppet smile on the left-side of the face; if you turned it the other way it would make the corner of the mouth on that side of the face droop down, giving the puppet a slightly sad expression, and vice versa on the other side."
Part 2 is about designing the movie set. It talks about the design influences on the buildings and how the sets were designed in order to facilitate shooting. There are write ups on the voice casts, animators and the music. Interesting to note is that the movie was shot using a digital SLR. A quote on the living and dead set:
"Both thematically and visually, Corpse Bride is about inversion, with the Land of the Living a gray, dead place where people are lifeless, hopeless and sad, while the Land of the Dead is full of vivacious dead people with a lust for life and joy."
On animators:
"Some will act out before the shot, others will videotape themselves and try and piece together a performance that way. Some animators sort of just go for it and sort of feel it."
Part 3 is the storyboard of the movie. This part is filled with the script, penciled storyboards and movie stills.
There are some pictures of the book on my blog. Just do an Internet search on "parka blogs corpse bride"

Definitely useful Review Date: 2007-05-17
The earnest, inclusive and reassuring tone was great---very down to earth. It's a good book to read when having a brideszilla moment to remind you to calm down, talk to your partner and remember why you're doing all this in the first place.
My main complaint was the chapter on current LGBT law on marriage, partnerships, legal protections etc. Since this type of information is always changing, it's better to check with a more up to date source (a local LGBT equality organization, a lawyer, the HRC website, or a legal guide). A related concern: nearly all the websites the book mentioned are defunct, under new management, or no longer useful. In addition to the oft-mentioned gayweddings.com (which I think has been bought out), I would also recommend checking out purpleunions.com if you're looking for vendors.
Also, the ceremony planning section was a bit thin on info on secular ceremonies. If you're not having a church wedding, I'd recommend a ceremony planning book like I Do by Sydney Barbara Metrick or Alternative Weddings by Jane Ross-MacDonald for the ceremony. But overall, this is a good book. I checked it out from the library originally, but actually ended up buying it.
