How to Plan Your Own Wedding and Save Thousands Without Going CrazyReview Date: 2008-08-01
This guide is very well written and researched especially to a bride who is a novice at wedding planning. Christian and Jewish wedding traditions are mentioned in areas such as wedding ceremony planning. Wedding details that include location, catering, wardrobe, entertainment, flowers and accessories give the reader a sense of options to choose from. Advice such as to how to choose the size, formality level, method, location, photographer, invitations and music are in this guide that also includes online wedding vendor contact information. Tracy Leigh used resourcefulness to help the reader select wedding apparel that would be elegant, yet affordable. The idea of renting tents, dresses or other supplies can save money for their special day.
This book contains options for very stately, elegant weddings, more informal weddings or justice of the peace officiated ceremonies.

Perfect for the bride-to-be!Review Date: 2008-02-29
The helpful lists and checklists can be copied and handed out to members of a wedding party, or anyone else who may be helping you plan. The concise language makes an easy-to-use guide for each person involved, while still keeping everything interesting. Leigh's questions for each vendor hit on topics I would have completely overlooked--she reminds readers that you can't assume a vendor knows exactly what you want, and you can't assume they have what you want. If you're on a tight budget for your wedding, you NEED this book. If you have an unlimited budget, read it anyways. Some of the personal touches you can create for your special day are perfect for everyone on any budget.

Great Wedding Planning GuideReview Date: 2008-02-14
Tips for searching for more information and helpful websites (including discount websites) are included and were a great help. Every aspect of planning a wedding is covered--styles and fabrics of wedding dresses are even described. This book even offers tips for what style dress is best for your body type.
I love that the book is both a cost savings guide and a guide to general wedding planning. Whether you have a large or small budget, this book will help you plan a great wedding while sticking to your budget.
The organized bride will love this book. The order of the chapters, the checklists, the lists of questions to ask are all great tools to keep on track. Those brides that balk at organization should do their best to follow this guide, although they might feel some details are overkill. My only compliant is that the case studies, although helpful to hear advice from experts, were a bit long and sometimes repetitive.
I would recommend this book to any bride wanting to plan her own wedding.

Five royal weddingsReview Date: 2007-10-01
This handsome little souvenir album is to commemorate an upcoming wedding anniversary -- that of England's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who will have been married for sixty years, in November 2007. It is also a look at how Royal weddings have changed and evolved from fairly private ceremonies that were witnessed by close family members and courtiers, to now what is a spectacle watched by millions on the television and launching a flurry of books, magazines and various souvenirs from the pleasant to the grossly tacky.
The five weddings themselves occur in a period of time that spans just over a century, from 1840 to 1947, with the criteria that either the bride or groom would be a monarch of the United Kingdom.
The first wedding is that between Queen Victoria and her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, in 1840. Victoria had been Queen of Great Britain for two years when her wedding was celebrated, and public curiosity was intense as to who she would choose to be her consort. With the rise of new printing techniques, there were now ways that the public could observe, albeit from a distance -- there were special prints and panoramas that were printed to feed the curiosity about the event.
About twenty years later, the next royal wedding occured, this time between Victoria and Albert's eldest son, Bertie, the Prince of Wales and the future Edward VII, and his fiancee, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, 1863. Now there was the art of photography to add to the documents; some of these were hand-tinted to create a nearly painting like quality. The gifts were also more opulent, and this time, were described in a special magazine that supplied all of the details from what the guests were wearing to engravings that showed various aspects of the wedding service itself.
Thirty years later, another wedding occured, this time between Bertie's son, George, Duke of York, and his cousin, Princess Mary of Teck, in 1894. This time, celebrations and public notice were high, with various royalties from around Europe visiting to pay their respects. The gifts were put on public display this time, and admission was charged, with the proceeds going to a charity. The bride's trousseau was described in various ladies magazines in lavish detail and illustrations.
The fourth wedding was that of George VI and Queen Mary's second son, Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. No one really expected them to become sovereigns of Great Britain, and so the celebrations were not quite as extravagant as might be expected. But one notable addition was that this was the first royal wedding to be filmed, and soon there would be opportunity for anyone to see it, all for the price of a ticket to the cinema, and sitting through a newsreel.
The fifth wedding was in 1947, with that of two of Queen Victoria's great-great-grandchildren -- Princess Elizabeth, and Prince Philip of Greece. After the dreary years of WWII, and the troubles of rebuilding, London was ready for a celebration. The outpouring from the public was immense, and it seems that all of England took the day off for a holiday. The marriage proved to be one of the most successful in the royal family, and appears to be still quite solid after nearly sixty years.
Each wedding goes into some detail about the clothing, providing pictures and closeups of the brides' gowns, showing some of the intricate sewing and decoration that went into the making. As was traditional, all of the clothing worn were made from British materials and designers. What I found especially beautiful were the samples of lace and embroidery, often with monograms and special designs incorporated into the designs. A very brief history of the couple is also included, talking a little about their childhoods, and what happened after the weddings. At the end of the book, there is also a listing of what music was performed at each wedding, with a few surprises tucked in.
What may surprise you is what you will not find in this book. There isn't any mention of Lady Diana, or of the notorious wedding of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson.
For anyone interested in royalty, and how what started as a private celebration soon became an opportunity for public celebration, this is a lovely, well-made and designed book. The photographs and pictures are unusual, many of which I had not seen before, and gave a sense of intimacy.
The author, Jane Roberts, is the Royal Librarian, and has compiled a beautiful little volume on the lore of royal weddings. For anyone interested in the English monarchy, it would be a nice addition to their collection.
Five stars. Recommended.

Expected BetterReview Date: 2007-04-23
I didn't read the other two books, but I could still understand what was happening which was nice. I just didn't care. I can accept formulaic (hey! It's a romance novel, we all know what will happen in the end!)but the story never picked up momentum.
I also disliked the basic premise of the story-- that Kit never recognized her until she cut her hair and got some pretty gowns. The premise could have been salvaged, but in the end, it simply wasn't romantic. Talk about true love.
This may have been my first book by this author, but it's almost certainly going to be my last.
Thank god it wasn't any longer than it was.Review Date: 2006-08-30
Worst. Choice. Ever.
I can see how the author tried to make things brisk and charming, but the story dragged like it was weighed down with an anvil. From the first sentence of the book you can tell exactly how it's going to end, so you'd think the journey itself would be interesting. Or that there would be an engaging and exciting sub-plot. Or, perhaps, witty dialogue. But unfortunately, there wasn't anything more intersting than the patently obvious, no plot other than the blandly predictable and a heroine too shy to speak in anything but monosyllables. When the author wanted to show how charming a conversationalist the heroine had become she simply had other characters in the book say, "Oh, she told me the funniest story and I laughed and laughed".
Witty? No. Sadly, nobody else in the book has anything interesting to say either.
I made sure I finished the book, but throughout the final chapters I kept thinking, "For goodness' sake! Get on with it already and put me out of my misery".

wonderful weight loss toolReview Date: 2006-11-05
A must have for people serious about losing weightReview Date: 2007-01-08
This is a simple to use journal that will fit just about any eating program you are using. Each day allows you to enter your food consumed, activities (i.e. exercise), water... as well as a place to enter your thoughts and I feelings. You get a graph to chart your progress, a small journal to use while traveling, and a list of many foods in the back with their basic nutritional information. The book also contains a great deal of practical advice that many can find helpful.
This book will not solve your weight issues, and it doesn't promise a magic bullet that will keep you thin forever. What it will do is give you an extremely useful tool that will help keep you on your program and allow you to accurately track your progress.

not impressedReview Date: 2008-10-04
The Pictures have beautiful colors however the subject of the pictures would give any child nightmares. The rhyming makes everything sound pretty but those rhymes are not nice. They are rude and mean. An example is:
His hot breath sprayed Miss Spider's face
With all the force he had,
He screamed, 'You will reveal his name!"
She said, "I won't, you cad!"
He turned his back and brayed, "I must
Go find and grind him into dust!
So foolish woman, be forewarned,
Spiderus Reeves shall not be scorned."
That is only two little paragraphs. I stopped reading it and explained to my children that sometimes books were not good for us to read and it was my job to make sure they had good things in their minds not garbage.
Miss Spider is now officially banned in our house.
I strongly suggest parents take the time to read the book before bringing it into your home.

Adult Reader Gives Three Thumbs UpReview Date: 2004-05-11
Even if you think the topic is a little too sensitive for your kids at this time, I recommend holding onto it until your little ones are ready -- or just buying a copy for yoursef. Because this book is excellent in all regards. It is well written, the plot is clear and funny, and the illustrations are...well, absolutely stunning. I picked this book up for myself. Once in a while, I will sit down, and literally put my fingers on the pictures. They are works of art. I like to read sections aloud, because the rhyming structure is so pleasing to the tongue.
There are very few children's books that still hold my attention. In fact, I would say that this book is a keeper for all ages. And when you decide your little one is old enough for the contents, I am sure he/she/they will delight in this superb book.

Getting married--great book!!Review Date: 2008-08-20
Wow!! I never realized how literally he took the book--he did the greatest things for me, and the best was that on the day before the wedding. He went and met most of our family staying at hotels and family's that came from out of town, to thank them for making the trip and spending it with our family! Many had never met!
It made our weekend wedding complete!!
Consider this little read a great investment--and in the life you will have together--if your betrothed takes the time to do anything in this book, you've got it made--luck to all!! Mine is the best!!
Useful AND funnyReview Date: 2004-07-14
This handy book (which really does fit in the standard back pocket, by the way) helps you remember things you might otherwise forget. It streamlines the process by explaining and eliminating unnecessary steps. It offers alternatives to traditional thinking, and supplies potential solutions to the problems that always crop up along the way. It provides hints for planning a honeymoon, dealing with in-laws and -- most vital of all -- how to communicate with your increasingly frantic honeypie as she draws ever closer to the Most Important Day of Her Life.
Would my wedding plans have changed drastically, had I not had this book at my disposal? I doubt it. But it helped me get through these preceding months with a smile and the knowledge that there was a ready resource in my back pocket, just in case some unexpected bump appeared in the process.

one of the best groom's guidesReview Date: 2004-02-11
This book has detail about each part of the planning process (from engagement through honeymoon) and lets the guy know what he needs to do, what he should do, and where he should step out of the way. This book has a bit more detail in some places than the more entertaining (though equally informative) book "The Clueless Groom's Guide", so I would consider this one (as well as the previously mentioned book) to be essential groom's guides and invaluable to the average guy who only knows that he should be standing up at the alter waiting for his wife to be to walk down the aisle. This book is worth the time to borrow from the library and it is worth the money to purchase. Either way, you can't go wrong with this book.
