Scholarly but never dull, this fascinating chronicle of the changes in the American wedding over the past century reveals the extent to which so many of our wedding "traditions" are actually fairly recent inventions -- lifted straight from the movies, or foisted upon us by the many industries that profit from the lavish wedding. Though the authors approach their task as researchers and seem to have no particular ax to grind, readers who feel that the opulence of the American wedding has spiraled out of control will likely find plenty of support here for making a change.

My daughter was the flowergirl in her aunt's wedding and she LOVED this book. I got it for her a couple months before the wedding and it gave her a real sense of what she would be doing in the wedding. She is an advanced reader for 6 years old, so she read this on her own and was fascinated with the the book's detailing of different types of weddings and different possible expectations. It did a great job of preparing her, and now she is enjoying the keepsake portion of the book (add photos, list who was in the wedding, etc.). Highly recommended!

This book is COMPLETE! I bought this for two of my flowergirls (Age 6 & 7). It's a great guidebook and nice souvenir but it's got a bit of a serious tone - there's a lot of talk about practicing so it may freak some kids out. That said it's comprehensive and certainly gives a child who hasn't been to a wedding before a great idea of what happens.
Packed with information (maybe a little too much)!

Our six year old had never been to a wedding before being asked to be a flower girl. (What an overwhelming responsibility to a small child!) There are loads of books out there about flower girls, but few are true "hand books" that give an overview of what takes place at weddings and what exactly a flower girl's role is. This book covers all of the basics and more. We found this book to be particularly helpful in explaining the hows, whens, whys, and whos. We relied on a fictionalized flower girl story to address stage fright, sibling envy, and the magic of weddings. Definitely recommended. The book would make a very nice gift from the bride to her flower girl(s).
Adorable, good book!

This is for your JBM or FG that is between 8-12. Even though the cover is pretty dorky looking the book is fabulous. It has a lot of really valuable information in it that helps the little lady know what to expect during the months leading up to the wedding and on wedding day. It would only work for relatively traditional weddings though that have showers before, a ceremony with a processional, and a reception with food and dancing. Our favorite parts of the book are when the book is more of a diary format when it asks the girl to write in her ideas and perceptions of both the couple and the wedding process. I gave this book to my niece and in one part she had to draw a picture of her future husband and write about all the qualities that she would like him to have. Her Mom is saving those pages for her own bridal shower in about 15 years. It will be hilarious!! This book is a wonderful keepsake/journal to make your little girl in your wedding feel prepared and very special.

What a major disappointment. Nothing special. Don't waste your money! If you cannot accomplish what this book advises on your own with a few checklists because of time or career constraints, save the money on the book and hire a good administrative or personal assistant that you can use for this and other tasks.

I thought freaking out about your wedding was a religious rite of passage until I read this book. I was very nervous about planning my second wedding because it was going to be much smaller than the first but I still wanted it to be just as beautiful. I had a lot of questions and concerns such as cutting the list, whether or not to have bridesmaids and what to wear. The author gave some very practical advice that helped me through this. After reading the book I felt like the planning became a more enjoyable experience!

Let's face it, marriage ain't what it used to be. These days, it takes a little practice to get it right. So when I decided to bolt on the ol' ball and chain for a second go 'round, I headed to the book store first. And that's where I stumbled upon this little lifesaver. All I've got to say is, thank you Julie Two Last Names.
Earlene and I could never have elegantly navigated the awkward waters of dé ja matrimony, if not for the pinpoint insights so coherently layed out in this obvious Pulitzer candidate. For instance, it delved into all the sensitive questions that both my betrothed and I dreaded. Like, would anybody really believe us when we took our vows again, even though we didn't honor them the first time? And, should we feel guilty about receiving wedding gifts, even though we didn't give back the ones from our first marraiges? (Thank goodness the answer was no.)
How to Plan an Elegant Second Wedding, is also packed with helpful hints, like the little known, but time honored tradition of selling the bride's previous engagement ring to pay for the honeymoon. Not to mention, bouquet tossing techniques that, for the right price, can land in predetermined hands.
What more can I say? If you're gonna re-ring those wedding bells, and you want to achieve it with both grace and style (i.e. so no one will laugh at you) this book is a must. Now, I only hope she writes the next in the series. Me and old lady #2 haven't been getting along of late.

Didn't someone say that remarriage is the triumph of hope over experience? Those of us who discovered genuine and lasting happiness only in our second marriages know that such hope is a vital antidote to just plain giving up. Anyway, this book offers sane and sensible advice for those planning to celebrate their second (or later) nuptuals "with grace and style," as the subtitle notes. Dubin covers the usual stuff (choosing time and place, creating guest lists, the ceremony, clothes, music, and so on) but also includes getting over your guilt, figuring out who pays for what this time, and including your kids in the big day.
Great advice!

This book is so full of wonderful thoughts and ideas... I only wish there were pictures in it. Eric and Lesie are gifterd writers and have beautiful hearts for God.... very encouraging! The cd is also wonderful and the songs are touching and very worshipful. If you desire to glorify the Divine Author of Romance on your wedding day this book is for you! Though the book is rather short, the depth and honesty of each chapter is well worth the price1

I loved this book. It gives such meaning to a Christ centered wedding. The CD and the words to the songs that Eric and Leslie Ludy have included with their book have such meaning. Each part of the wedding ceremony is given Christ centered meaning in this book and is so important in the meaning of the convenant that a man and woman declare before God. Thank you Eric and Leslie for putting God back into the wedding ceremony!

Due to the problems we had right before the marriage commitment, we had to go through somewhat intensive pre-marriage counseling. Thanks to that continuous struggle in the first year of marriage, I've been happily married for three years now and am looking forward to years to come. Because I know how much the concept of having Jesus center of our marriage helped us through pre-marraige counseling, my husband and I are advocate of pre-marriage counseling to the engaged/newly married couples. Even if we were Christians who want to have Jesus to be center of our everything, it was easy for us to use Him just as a backdrop of life's most important event such as a wedding. This book is a fresh reminder that as a follower of Jesus, what it is like to have the most Christ honoring wedding through the authors' creative ideas. I have seen some weddings using ideas from this book. Unfortunately they didn't go beyond one of the special program and failed to reach the true meaning behind it. However, I can see how it can be used as witnessing to those who don't know Christ. I would suggest this book to those who want to explore how to honor Christ through their wedding with creative but biblical ideas. If you're looking for something beyond just wedding planning, I would suggest, 'Now you're engaged' instead.

I love the Ludy's, and their other books have impacted my life greatly. I ordered this book to give as an engagement gift for a friend of mine who is getting married this summer. I found the book surfacy and juvenile, and the ceremony tips were suggestions I have heard many times before. This book would best be for very young people who are getting married (under 23), but is not advisable for anyone over that age range.

There is a great deal of information available for anyone who is planning their own wedding. As a wedding Officiant, I can tell you, people often invest thousands of dollars in their weddings, but typically spend very little time planning their vows, or leave it entirely up to someone like me to write the vows for them, and that's fine. That's part of what people pay us to do. But the truth is, a minister doesn't know the bride and groom as well as they know themselves. Sometimes you get lucky. You run across a couple who will open their hearts and tell their stories in minute detail, giving you plenty to work with, but that is seldom the case.
In planning a ceremony, particularly a Christian ceremony, which is all that I will perform, I find myself turning to this fine book, THE COMPLETE BOOK OF CHRISTIAN WEDDING VOWS by H. Norman Wright, over and over again. For that special couple who go the extra mile to plan the perfect ceremony and write their own vows, this book is a wonderful place to start. As I said, there is a mountain of information out there, but you don't need a mountain of information, you need a place to start, and this 200 page book is it. It will point you in the right direction and give you plenty of good ideas for your perfect day.
As with most books of this nature, there is a certain amount of "page filler" fluff that could have been omitted, although there is some interest here as well, such as the chapter entitled "What Could Possibly Go Wrong". These are experiences Wright has witnessed as a officiant that might give food for thought. But the crux of the matter here are the pages filled with examples of other ceremonies, vows, prayers, vows to include others, reaffirmations and so on. There is something here that, though it may not precisely fit your special occasion, will at least give a good starting point and give you some very good ideas that you can alter to fit your needs.
In the chapter on writing your own vows, there is an excellent worksheet, which I have altered slightly and adapted to my own service. I find it most useful in learning about a couple and I believe it might help you learn just what you might want in your vows. Wright also includes a good selection of prayers from virtually every Christian denomination.
There is even a decent endnote bibliography in case you still want to spend more money on your ceremony. If you're reading this, you undoubtedly have a need and to that I say, congratulations on your upcoming wedding and may God grant you a life of love, happiness, peace and prosperity.

This book is a MUST-BUY if you're a Christian couple planning your wedding! H. Norman Wright has written many books on marriage, but this one is unique.
I gave this book to my daughter and her fiance a few months before the wedding. They used this book to get ideas for writing their wedding vows. There is also a section of Scriptures that are good ones to use for a wedding. My daughter and her husband used Colossians 3:12-17. So many couples seem to have 1 Corinthians 13 (the "Love Chapter") almost by default. Come up with something different - something that really suits the two of you!
Right now I'm listening to the author of this book on Moody Broadcasting's MidDay Connection. ... . Order the book here on Amazon and the tape from Moody Cassette Ministries!
May God bless your marriage richly!

A great resource for those planning a wedding on a budget! This book is great for both novice and expert Ebay users. For novices, there's a whole section that explains how to sign up and bid on Ebay. The most helpful part of the book for me was the search words for Ebay. Often times, wording is everything in finding the right item, and this book definitely helped out in that department.

This is a great resource, especially in conjunction with other notes and study materials. It shouldn't be the sole basis of your AP test review, but it presents a lot of the essential ideas, concepts and facts. And it helped me get a 5 on the AP test.

the review is very vague, important vocabulary is not highlighted, just a sort of rambling by the author that reviews random parts of what you need to know. also the author says things like "you should have learned about this in your textbook and if you don't remember go back and look in your textbook" a lot which really defeats the purpose of a review book. i think this can only be helpful if you REALLY know your stuff and just need a very light review but in that case you probably don't even need this book. also i don't like that there are no multiple choice questions at the end of every section. at the end of every section there is a review that consists of a paragraph or two with blanks that you have to fill in with arbitrary words.
