Not Just A Book About Quilts or Quilting

One of the best light readings since Shell Seekers. A story of three generations of women that can be identified by women of many age levels. It gives the reader an in-depth look into each of the character's lives and personalities. Personal events make up their histories and this is told well by the author. A book the reader doesn't want to put down.

A work of art

I was drawn to this book by its lovely cover; a pretty quilt draped over a cozy porch swing. When I read the back flap and saw it was a story about relationships I knew it was going to be my kind of book. What I didn't know was how stirring the novel would be, and how very deeply it would touch me. The plot is as intricate and well crafted and the characters as colorful as the wedding ring quilt around which the story centers. Ms. Richards has truly created a work of art, and one that I enjoyed from beginning to end. Wedding Ring is a must read for any woman who has ever questioned her life decisions. It is a tribute to any woman who has journeyed through sorrow and found within herself the courage to make it to the other side.

This was an excellent read. I loved the way Richards showed how important one quilt was to three different women. It was a very moving story of three generations that finally got to know one another. I am recommending to all my friends and fellow quilters.

This was my first Emilie Richards book. I thought it was going to start out as just a book about the problems a young couple were having, but it quickly turned out to be so much more than that. I loved the twists and turns and flashbacks to the the previous generation. Richards has a wonderful way of weaving human emotions, families, and mystery all together. I could hardly put the book down.

The art in this book is great, but I felt that overall this is a great book for older flower girls between the ages of 6 and 8 (the flower girls participating in my wedding are 4 and 5). The text in the book was a little too wordy in some parts, however the duties of the flowergirl was covered very well.

Great price, cute book!

"The Little Flower Girl" is a true-to-life enactment of what a child could expect to feel when participating in a wedding.

Louisa is asked to be a flower girl at her Uncle Jim's wedding. At first, Louisa is excited to be included until she begins to wonder and worry about her role. She wants to be the best flower girl that she can be. Meanwhile, her two year old brother George is oblivious about his role as the ring bearer, as depicted when he fusses during the wedding rehearsel and hides behind the ring bearer pillow as the wedding is taking place.

It is an amusing story and addresses the anxieties some children feel about being a part of a wedding. Louisa realizes that weddings are not just about fancy dresses and eating a big cake. What is most important is when people come together "and dance in a circle of love."

Christian-oriented with some questionable values
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 31 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-19
First of all, this book is fundamentally Christian non-denominational. The plot takes place at a church, so the book is inappropriate for Jewish weddings. [Although flower girls aren't part of a traditional Jewish wedding, many couples are incorporating it into ceremonies these days (because the kids are so cute and it saves them from boredom).]

The book is not offensive to other religions per se, so you could use it to give girls a general look at the role of a flower girl, but religion-based questions are likely to arise.

Secondly, the plot involves the flower girl putting on makeup. I wouldn't want to have my flower girl wearing, wanting, or expecting makeup.

Third, the flower girl's little brother doesn't want to be the ring bearer so he hides from his parents to avoid the task. I wouldn't want to plant this idea in a child's head.

Otherwise, the book is well-illustrated and colorful.

This is the one to buy! Perfect in every way!

I ordered 4 books on being a flower girl for my 4.5 year old granddaughter. This was the best of the 4 books I ordered. My granddaughter wasn't very excited about being a flower girl but this book changed her mind! She absolutely glowed when I read this to her! Each turn of the page was a delight! The book explains the steps to prepare for the big day. The author didn't miss a detail and wrote a cute little story along the way. My granddaughter's expression and soft "Ohh" when she saw the page with the bride in her wedding dress was priceless!

I bought this book after I'd taken it out from the library along with a bunch of other wedding books. This one was the only one that I knew I could use when it got around to handing out the money for my wedding. The checklists for each type of vendor is the most helpful- I haven't seen any other book that has this. These include good questions to ask vendors before you sign contracts with them. Concise and definitely beneficial! Go to their website too- it's just as thorough!

Great resource for planning a wedding

This book is great! Of course it comes from the most trusted resource in wedding information, but that doesn't always mean something. It does in this case. I have been picking it up constantly since I got it in the mail. I was a little surprised the first time I picked it up because it is in black and white, but they really give you a ton of information that somehow isn't diminished by the lack of color. Anything that they describe usually has a drawing or diagram, or even a black and white photo. I have read a few other planning books and this one definitely takes the cake :). I would definitely recommend using this one as a resource, and I'll probably pass it on to my sister when she gets engaged.

This book is very comprehensive, and helpful. I'm going to be a wedding consultant and this book (along with TheKnot.com) is a big help in organizing a wedding and all of the details from picking out the engagement ring to the honeymoon. There are pictures, diagrams, real-life stories, and helpful tips throughout. Highly recommended! (There is some bad language in it, but what can you expect from a secular book?)

Susan M. Tiberghien draws upon her years of experience and expertise as a veteran writing instructor, writers' conference speaker, and graduate school lecturer in "One Year To A Writing Life: Twelve Lessons To Deepen Every Writer's Art And Craft". A gifted writer in her own right, Susan Tiberghien covers journal writing, personal essays; opinion and travel essays; short stories (included the 'Short-Short'); dreams and writing; dialogue; folklore, fairy tales, and contemporary tales; poetic prose and the 'Prose Poem'; memoirs and biography; rewriting; and more. Of special note are her chapters on 'The alchemy of Imagination' and 'Writing the Way Home'. Enhanced with a specialized bibliographies and a comprehensive index, " One Year To A Writing Life" is as informed and informative, as it is inspired and inspiring -- making it strongly recommended reading for all novice writers and aspiring authors.

For the last seven months, since I suggested our writers' group work, learn & write our way through Susan Tiberghien's One Year To A Writing Life, our group's commitment has solidified with each chapter of her book. Each bi-weekly meeting finds the six of us (writers, poets, academics)gathered to read & review our exercises from each chapter, copies for all and with reference to Tiberghien's "text". Recently, as a response to the growth in our writing and our awareness of that growth, we have re-committed to returning to particular chapters so that we may explore them once more in even greater depth, based on both the pleasure of the process and our personal learnings as writers. As the convener of our group, I would suggest a group approach to One Year To A Writing Life is an ideal
process to apply to Susan Tiberghien's wise & illuminating guidance.

This is a wonderful book. I have been using One Year to a Writing Life as a textbook this semester in my Creative Writing course. The book is very well conceived so my syllabus follows the twelve lessons, week by week, with extra weeks for longer in-class writing. The book provides clear guidance, great examples and it inspires! It inspires me to both teach and write and it inspires my students. Before I chose One Year to a Writing Life as a textbook for my class, I surveyed many texts that are on the market and not a single one comes close to this great book. Thank you, Ms. Tiberghien, for helping all of us who write and who teach writing. Jelena S. Bankovic, Ph.D.

The richness and thoughtful spirit of these twelve lessons is inspiring and meaningful as any mentor could recite prayers of meditative instruction. I have been a student of
Tiberghien's workshops; here's the five-star creme de creme.

This book answered so many questions I had about wedding planning ... even AFTER I had done hours and hours of research. I find it to be an extremely valuable reference to hold on to during the planning process.

I strongly disagree with reviewers that say this book is only for rich brides who want that cookie-cutter princess wedding. I'm NOT having that kind of wedding at all, and I tailored the basic information I used from this book to create a very individualized wedding that's a little traditional, and also a little offbeat. The tips in here are mere guidelines, and it's a great place to get started if you haven't the slightest clue where to start when planning a wedding.

One section I found particularly helpful was the invitation wording. Our families are very different, and both are contributing in their own way, financially or otherwise, and this book had about 10 different way to word invitations based on your individual family situation. SO helpful!

EXCELLENT for people planing their own weddings.

After spending months of watching television shows, reading magazines, browsing online, attending bridal shows and reading other books, I found this book and I LOVE it. If you're planning your own wedding, and can't afford a wedding planner, this book is fantastic. It has TONS of details, large and small, on how the typical wedding works right down to the order of who walks down the isle when depending on what type of ceremony you're having, and nice personal touches you can add to your wedding (if you choose to) like using matching stamps on your invitation and RSVP envelope. If you don't have time to plan every detail of your own wedding, maybe you should be hiring a wedding planner so you don't have to worry about the small stuff, but if you're doing it yourself, this has a TON of useful info. It will tell you what elements are traditionally included, and then you can modify them to your own tastes. I've been leaving sticky notes on pages I want to refer to later, and for my wedding with under a $10,000 budget, I have about 50 sticky notes in the book, and I'm not even done reading yet!

Good reference, but outdated

Wedding trends change every season, if not every month. It's hard to print a book that can keep up with the ever-changing customs, traditions, styles, etc. This book was useful as a reference - such as for financial issues, tips, advice, seating arrangements, etc. However, it is already very outdated in terms of what is "in", who is expected to pay for what, etc which is what - i think - brides (and grooms!) would be most interested in.

If you are taking lessons and are serious about putting some hard work into learning how to dance then this book is a great resource. As a 50-ish beginner, I loved the background information but did skip ahead to the "lessons", only to come back later and see how important the background and foundations were! Like anything else, there are no shortcuts if you want a quality result. You're not going to pick this book up and be dancing in a week, any more than you could learn to paint a landscape or play the piano in a week. Dancing is music, art and body control. Idiots, - It takes practice!
One suggestion: I would like to have seen some footwork diagrams as many "Idiots", like myself, need a visual diagram in addition to photos and the lengthy "Step" descriptions.

Lots of fat - not much meat...

I had high hopes when I bought this book. I have never danced before so perhaps that is why after reading it, I did not think this book was entirely for dummies who did not know how to dance. The book had much advice about dancing and the preparatory stages before dancing, but when it came down to the actual explanations of dancing it was difficult for me to follow the sequences especially looking at a book while trying to copy what it said. I felt it focused to much on the wedding day event, which is old news for someone who has been married for a while- perhaps including a section about how to animate a reluctant spouse to dance would have been more appropriate! The book wasn't the main disappointment. It was the DVD. I had hoped for more explicit instruction when viewing the DVD and there was none. He spoke some advice during the clips but did not explain what was going on. It was like watching a performance which although beautiful to behold was still mysterious. Not having had any prior dancing experience but lots of desire to want to teach myself, I suppose I expected too much from this book and it left me naturally let down. Those who have some dancing experience will find this book much more enjoyable and will benefit from it more fully.

Great for the absolute beginner

This book will take you through the basic patterns of popular social dances and does a fairly adept job of doing so. This is purely a footwork book, as there is little mention of styling, but for the absolute novice it will get you out on the dance floor.

I particularly enjoyed the section on rhythm and the emphasis that dancing is about doing the same motion, the exact same way every time, so you don't really have to have rhythm to dance, you just need to perform the same motion the same way consistently. I have a friend struggling with this same issue in his dancing and recommended this book to him, with the practice exercises included, to help him improve.

All in all, a well written book for the novice dancer and one I recommend.

To bo honest I have not read much of the book, I started dance classes (ballroom and latin)about 2months ago and I am able to pick up the moves pretty fast cause I love it. So I focussed more on the CD here which I was very impressed with. It was more than I expected to find, covering a few basics two or three patterns per dance, having a little knowledge of dance already it was a nice review and practise. However to thos of you that are interested in the book you will find explanations for both the man and woman's steps and also pictures as guidelines covering waltz, foxtrot, tango, viennese waltz, rumba, merengue, samba, cha-cha, mambo, east coast swing...that's a good spread for your money, of course the Cd is necessary to also help explain.

This is a great crash course on available lighting. Bill does not bore the reader with superfluous information but gives you very practical, up to date, information on how to maximize the use of ambient light. Lots of images and example that clarify application.

He is able to make complex concept into easily understood one. But most of all, he helps you understand lighting concepts in a way you can apply them right away.

I highly recommend it to any beginning photographer as well as a great quick reference for seasoned photographers.
