this book had all ages of wedding celebrations and some really great pictures of many years and many celebrities as well as us common folk. I loved looking back at all the great fashions and memories. This would make an excellent gift book to a newly engaged person as she begins to plan a wedding. clinta ingraham

This beautiful, full color books features stunningly photographed dresses of all shapes, sizes and colors with a well written and extensive history of gowns and related traditions. The photo spreads are lavish, and not at the expense of the text of the book. But as some other reviewers have mentioned, each time period starts out with a few examples of the appropriate vintage gowns and then shifts into photos of modern gowns interpreting or inspired by that period, which is a little disappointing. Unless you're a designer or a collector this book isn't worth the nearly $90 sticker price, but if you can get it used or at the bargain price (as I did), it's a beautiful coffee table book with enough text to keep you reading for quite awhile!

Classy

This book is definitely modern, presenting sofisticated and classy designs. It focuses on how modern designers are inspired by the past. Unfortunately there's not a lot of documentation, 98% of the dresses are modern, but brides looking for ideas will find it very useful. If you're more interested in the past, I suggest you look up Maria McBride-Mellinger.

I got this book literally two days ago for Christmas. I love it. I had it on my amazon wish list, and somebody bought it for me. I expected the book to be much smaller -I was happily suprised at the size and thickness! As a browser, it has spectacular large photos.

I am am in the wedding industry and I did recognize some of the more recent photographs from designers' advertising campaigns. I love some of the older photographs, and old sketches. I do think there was an excellent representation of gowns from each decade. Most of the photos seem to come from the fashion industry or pop culture archives. There are only a few more photos from real everyday brides' weddings.

I plan to read the text cover to cover this weekend. So far the captions and the layout I notice are straightforward, organized chronologically. It should be a short read like any coffee table book. The book covers the decades of the 20th century. Each decade shows representations from popular culture, from everyday weddings, from marketing campagins, as well as some designers' over-the-top "visions." I did not expect it to read like "history" book like some of the other feedback. What I expected to get out of it was an inspiring visual browse, and overview of wedding fashions of the 20th century, and I was very satisfied in that respect.

I have owned this book myself for many years, and because I find it to be extremely useful for anyone pursuing his/her inner journey, I purchased it for a friend. Readers should, however, have a basic understanding of psychology before venturing into the "wedding" of the female and male psyche.

Exceelent - addresses the dark side as well as the light

this book was very helpful in my process of deciding whether to get married and then during my engagement. A junian therapist, Leonard adressed the dark side as well as the light. She gave me great comfort when I was having less than perfect feelings about the whole process -- which is normal but rarely discussed. She also delves into the symbolism of the Ring and The Veil and the importance of taking time to go within oneself before merging with the other. But as she says it is good for any kind of Marriage process -- even that of being more connected and "married" to oneself" or one's work, etc. Insightful, Rich with Imagry, story telling and the power of archtypes. I recommend this book to any one seeking a book that is not afraid to embrace the shadow on the way into the light. It was very helpful to me.

I liked this book overall. I would just like to say that:

1) I don't like crybaby Mary Anne who tries to rule (and ruin) Dawn's life. Have you read "Farewell, Dawn?"

2) I wish Mr. Dewitt and Mrs. Barrett's wedding were on a different date than Dawn's father's, so the BSC could be together at both.

Otherwise, the book is ok and does have it's funny parts, but it was not my favourite.

I thought it would be a great book but it was just okay. Dawn's father is getting married in California while Buddy, Suzi and Marnie's mother Mrs. Barrett is getting married in Connecticut. I didn't like the dresses Mary Anne and Dawn were wearing on the cover and Mary Anne didn't either, but the way Dawn portrayed her made her seem out of control though she's not like that. I've noticed time and time again that Dawn always looked for faults in Mary Anne and took everything she said the wrong way while in the Mary Anne books, she seems really lovable and wouldn't harm a fly. I found it sad at first that all the baby sitters couldn't attend dawn's father's wedding, but it was nice of them to help the Baretts look after the kids during their wedding, though in real life it may be a bit unrealistic. Also, Dawn goes back to Connecticut at the end of this book, but only for a short time because she decides to move back to California in the book Farewell Dawn, which was issued a few months after this book was published from what I remember in those days.

Good reference for addressing envelopes

I think this book is most useful for it's explanation of how the envelopes for wedding invitations are addressed (i.e. who's name goes first, what do you write on the inner envelope, etc.) I even found out how to address one to an Archdeacon! It also has helpful Q & A sections.

An etiquette book with an attitude.
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-13

From the very beginning of the book, the author has a chip on his shoulder.

Basically, Feinberg works for Crane's Stationery. Okay, fine. However, he almost immediately feels the need to discredit any etiquette maven who has said that you don't need a complete set of obscure, engraved stationery to generate proper correspondence.

However, if there's something wedding-related that you want to do in style, there's a good chance that he'll have an answer for you. Wedding, shower and party invitations; thank-you notes; reaffirmations of vows; etc. If you want to do it with engraved stock, he'll happily give you the proper way to do it. And if you happen to get that stock from Crane's, all the better, right?

Granted, the author is still a stickler for wording conventions and will give you a flat-out "No" on many current standards. Examples abound, and I believe there's a section on how to address certain political figures.

This book could be a handy reference to hand around between couples as more and more of your peers marry. Concise with a good index, the author's execuction, if not his motives, are presented quite smoothly.

In West Hope, Massachusetts, Jo, Lily, Sarah, and Elaine formed Second Chances, which successfully hosted a wedding for Jo's mom. The group caters to people marrying for the second time. Single father Andrew Kennedy has joined the team, but hides his day job as a columnist for Buzz magazine from the females especially fearing Jo's reaction as he has fallen in love with her.

Feeling a bit guilty about duping the women and knowing he needs to confess to Jo, Andrew tests the water by informing Elaine. However, before he admits his secret to his beloved, Jo reads Buzz and recognizes that the man who has given her a second chance at believing has lied by omission. Will a distraught Andrew persuade a devastated Jo that she can trust him if she gives him a second chance?

The concurrently published sequel to the delightful middle age women's fiction ONCE UPON A BRIDE, TWICE UPON A WEDDING, will provide the audience with double the fun. The story line concentrates on Elaine's efforts to redo herself into something better and on Andrew's attempts to tell the truth and make it with Jo. Though reading the first book helps as it provides much of the baseline for this tale, contemporary women's fiction readers can enjoy this tale as a fine modern day relationship drama.

Great behind the scenes

This book is more of a movie companion book than an artbook, although there's plenty of art to look at.

The book's divided into 3 parts:
Part 1 - Land of the Living
Part 2 - Land of the Dead
Part 3 - Going Upstairs, The Illustrated Story

You know those behind the scenes videos from movie DVDs? This book is essentially that, except in written form.

Part 1 talks about how the story was conceived, the people involved in making the movie, project development, and the challenges to handling stop motion animation. There's a lot on character design, especially the back stories that determine who they are, and how they were created physically. There are very interesting details you'll learn in the creation process. Below's a quote on controlling facial movements:

"By inserting an Allen wrench into a socket in the ears of the puppets, the animators could control various facial movements. If you put the key into the left ear and turn it in one direction, it would make the puppet smile on the left-side of the face; if you turned it the other way it would make the corner of the mouth on that side of the face droop down, giving the puppet a slightly sad expression, and vice versa on the other side."

Part 2 is about designing the movie set. It talks about the design influences on the buildings and how the sets were designed in order to facilitate shooting. There are write ups on the voice casts, animators and the music. Interesting to note is that the movie was shot using a digital SLR. A quote on the living and dead set:

"Both thematically and visually, Corpse Bride is about inversion, with the Land of the Living a gray, dead place where people are lifeless, hopeless and sad, while the Land of the Dead is full of vivacious dead people with a lust for life and joy."

On animators:

"Some will act out before the shot, others will videotape themselves and try and piece together a performance that way. Some animators sort of just go for it and sort of feel it."

Part 3 is the storyboard of the movie. This part is filled with the script, penciled storyboards and movie stills.

There are some pictures of the book on my blog. Just do an Internet search on "parka blogs corpse bride"

If you are looking for a book with a little bit of insight into the creation of the Corpse Bride film, this is good choice. Nice selection of production pictures and concept artwork with a good description of the processes involved.

The book covers puppet making, music creation and a small scale time line of concept to film.

If you love the film, you shoudn't miss the book.

I bought this book several months ago in a local bookstore. The photos and images in the book attracted my attention almost immediately, although at that time I've only heard of the film but haven't watched it. Like other behind-the-scenes books, it shows how they produced the film in every detail, from beginning to end. I especially like the concept sketches and the black humor. The production process also provides a good reference to the making of stop-motion animation, which makes this book unique. If you like the the film or stop-motion animation, I believe this book won't disappoint you.

This is not a guide, it's a collection of wedding horror stories other people have submitted to the author's website. You can read those stories for free.

The author's attempt at wit falls far short of the mark...she comes across as a mean-spirited boor. For real wedding advice, pick up Peggy Post's updated edition of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette instead.

Using razor-sharp wit, humor, and old fasioned common sense, Hamilton takes us by the hand and leads us to the promised land of "wedding prep bliss." This book should be the first purchase in the MOB's bridal budget.

I bought this book because I wanted a light hearted read to give me a break from all the chaos in planning. It was an easy read yet funny and somewhat informative. I LOVED it and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in etiquette yet not consumed by it. It cleared up a few questions that I had as well as gave me a lot of good ideas on what NOT to do and most of all laughs. There were also a few OMGs because I couldn't not believe the ridiculousness of some people/brides.
All in all a definite for any new bride.

i read this entire book from cover to cover and I found it to be not only hilarious, but extremely helpful, as it covers basic etiquette concerning weddings that maybe not everyone is already aware of. i guess the main thing is that it basically illustrates how doing little "harmless" things that an ignorant or just plain naive person would do (i.e. putting wedding registry info along with an invitation, "forgetting" to give thank-you notes) could result in people getting really offended and/or hurt. the examples (true stories!) are quite interesting and funny to read, and make you realize how you really don't want to become one of those bridezillas! This is probably the book equivalent to that show on WE (can't remember the name) featuring "bridezillas" going nutso during their wedding planning. The thing is, once you see how ugly and nasty people like that can become, you'll want to do everything in your power not to turn into one of them. :)

This book is great for someone wanting a general overview of a Hindu Wedding ceremony.

There is a lot of marital advice given to the couple, which is a good thing if you have never been married before. However, I learned more from the internet than this book offers. The material was too general and covered too many different regions in India.

I would look elsewhere, unless I were clueless.

i think this is a good starting point for a planning a hindu wedding when you really have no idea what a hindu wedding entails. but i found the overall tone a little simplistic and not really written with modern society in mind. nevertheless, there are some good definitions and descriptions - just make sure you research the different rituals more.

This is a highly readable book with something for everyone involved in planning, attending or hosting a Hindu wedding. It is suitable as a gift, a coffee table book, a primer to learn about Hindu ceremonies and a resource list for those planning the ceremony. The graphic design and photos make this book a visual treat while the information makes Vivah invaluable.

Vivah starts out with helpful segments entitled "Before We Begin". It starts with easy reading and works on building a starting point for envisioning the perfect day. Each chapter talks about the ceremony and what it takes to have a beautiful ceremony but never forgets to add spiritual and inspirational words and comments to remind the reader that marriage isn't just a ceremony but a sacrament.

Readers are treated to short quick tips throughout that provide small bits of information that might be lost in a page of text. The tips are featured from front to back cover and offer the key to make any Hindu ceremony a success. The book covers many traditions - which is both good and a downfall. If you are a westerner you will find that an Indian wedding you go to doesn't necessarily do the same practices or all the practices listed in the book. It still is a good source for someone going in blindly, and probably the best available. Hopefully a more in depth book will come out that explains each of the steps with more meaning then just a superficial application to American culture.

I am an english girl marrying a hindu man so had no clue about the traditions before now. This book provides a very good short summary of everything and I will be giving it to my parents to read so they are not totally suprised on the day! However for the bride to be I would recommend the A Comprehensive Wedding Planner by Sarbjit K Gill which has more detail and also gives guidance on what kind of questions to ask your vendors etc.
Overall though- a great introduction, clear and easy to understand in a nice layout.
