This book uses a lot of words, but fails to make clear how to master a dance step. Disappointing. It makes a good coffee table book (one leg was shorter than the rest.)

More information than in a dancing lesson!

If you are taking lessons and are serious about putting some hard work into learning how to dance then this book is a great resource. As a 50-ish beginner, I loved the background information but did skip ahead to the "lessons", only to come back later and see how important the background and foundations were! Like anything else, there are no shortcuts if you want a quality result. You're not going to pick this book up and be dancing in a week, any more than you could learn to paint a landscape or play the piano in a week. Dancing is music, art and body control. Idiots, - It takes practice!
One suggestion: I would like to have seen some footwork diagrams as many "Idiots", like myself, need a visual diagram in addition to photos and the lengthy "Step" descriptions.

Not entirely for dummies

I had high hopes when I bought this book. I have never danced before so perhaps that is why after reading it, I did not think this book was entirely for dummies who did not know how to dance. The book had much advice about dancing and the preparatory stages before dancing, but when it came down to the actual explanations of dancing it was difficult for me to follow the sequences especially looking at a book while trying to copy what it said. I felt it focused to much on the wedding day event, which is old news for someone who has been married for a while- perhaps including a section about how to animate a reluctant spouse to dance would have been more appropriate! The book wasn't the main disappointment. It was the DVD. I had hoped for more explicit instruction when viewing the DVD and there was none. He spoke some advice during the clips but did not explain what was going on. It was like watching a performance which although beautiful to behold was still mysterious. Not having had any prior dancing experience but lots of desire to want to teach myself, I suppose I expected too much from this book and it left me naturally let down. Those who have some dancing experience will find this book much more enjoyable and will benefit from it more fully.

Great for the absolute beginner

This book will take you through the basic patterns of popular social dances and does a fairly adept job of doing so. This is purely a footwork book, as there is little mention of styling, but for the absolute novice it will get you out on the dance floor.

I particularly enjoyed the section on rhythm and the emphasis that dancing is about doing the same motion, the exact same way every time, so you don't really have to have rhythm to dance, you just need to perform the same motion the same way consistently. I have a friend struggling with this same issue in his dancing and recommended this book to him, with the practice exercises included, to help him improve.

All in all, a well written book for the novice dancer and one I recommend.

To bo honest I have not read much of the book, I started dance classes (ballroom and latin)about 2months ago and I am able to pick up the moves pretty fast cause I love it. So I focussed more on the CD here which I was very impressed with. It was more than I expected to find, covering a few basics two or three patterns per dance, having a little knowledge of dance already it was a nice review and practise. However to thos of you that are interested in the book you will find explanations for both the man and woman's steps and also pictures as guidelines covering waltz, foxtrot, tango, viennese waltz, rumba, merengue, samba, cha-cha, mambo, east coast swing...that's a good spread for your money, of course the Cd is necessary to also help explain.

This book is great!! Everything a photographer needs, to learn more about his/her photography business. The examples are also fantastic (they even give all the details about the picture) which I love!!

Great images, good text but layout lost a star.

The book is well written, with good images, so why not 5 stars?

I read the book cover to cover and that is the problem it's not an easy read. They didn't know what this book was when they did the layout. It's set up as a coffee table book with lots of good images and lots of information on how the images were taken. This causes bad breaks in the text, they break in the middle of paragraphs, and even worse sentences. One sentence cuts in the middle for multiple pages of images then picks back up with the end of the sentence.

As for the information provided in the book, it's good but not really new. One issue I have is that some of the chapters feel forced. This book covers the business of wedding photography so it has a chapter on bookkeeping that can be summed up as find good software and a good accountant. I get it, he doesn't do his own bookwork, fine, skip the chapter and write about what you do.

The images are great, the text is nothing new but it is motivational and gives a good blueprint to follow for the business of wedding photography. Overall this is a good book and would have been 5 stars if they had shown the attention to detail in the layout of the book that they put into the images.

When I heard and read that Damien Lovegrove was to release a book I smiled and thought YES.A portfolio and notes of advice all rolled into one from one of the UK's most sought after Photographer and Speaker is certainly worth a second look. Knowing Damien and his work like I do, it was no surprise that I would be ordering one as soon as the chance presented itself. Having being on one of Damien's Location Lighting Courses, I was in receipt of a set of notes at the end of the course which are kept on a safe location in my bookshelf. These aforementioned notes are still an important reference document. Shelved alogside this is my new investment (Damien' Book, The Complete Guide to Professional Wedding Photography) It is up ther with Bambi Cantrell and Julie Oswin.
The book itself is well presented and feels good tothe touch, like a wedding album which is to be cherished. It is full of well lit and well composed images with metadata attached so that you the reader can get an insight into the creation and the story of the image. The text is carefully worded and easy to read and anyone who knows Damien's voice you could be forgiven for thinking he was reading it to you.
I refer to it for both ideas and reference so that I am not outdone by the challenges that the present day photographer has to face.
Get your copy, it is well worth twice what you would pay, you will be sure to get several ideas from it, if you only get one it will still be worth it.
I hope you will enjoy the book as my as I have done,

Tim Collins.

Fantastic, in-depth resource for international photographers

Review Date: 2008-01-08
As an emerging wedding photographer, I was seeking a definitive resource that provided good compositional examples, ideas for running the scheduling of a wedding day, advice about business management and customer service, and workflow. I found all this and much more in Damien Lovegrove's superb book.

Where other wedding photography books failed for me, this one stood out heads and shoulders above the rest. I found that this book (while demonstrating a distinct British flavour, given the high formality of many of the weddings photographed) still transcended international barriers, where everything became relevant for me even as an Australian photographer.

Damien Lovegrove has a clear, succinct and easy-to-read narrative style of writing. He offers solid examples of his fine work, technical information and the environmental context relating to how they were achieved, together with detailed information about how to manage a wedding day, post-wedding workflow, and developing your business for profit.

Mr Lovegrove doesn't bog the book down with explanations of basic photographic theory, nor does he spend too much time discussing the type of camera or flash you should be using. He jumps straight into the nitty-gritty of the issue, and assumes that the reader already has at least some experience with cameras and photography. If he ever produced a book with detailed lighting concepts and theory, photographers would have the perfect library for their career in just two books.

Mr Lovegrove is genuinely inspirational and explains that he too worked from the ground up, and that only through hard work and dedication was his ambition realised.

This book was absolutely fantastic and I know that I will be buying any of his future books, his DVDs and attending his seminars. Damien Lovegrove is truly a master in his field. This book, above any other non-technical resource you may be considering, is vital for any photographer serious about becoming great.

We've all been there before: dumped by a not-so-great guy for someone else. Yet something inside compels us to try to win them back, dignity and common sense be damned. Brooke Miller is with us.

Brooke made the fatal mistake of doubting the sexiness of her Scottish boyfriend Douglas's kilt, and soon found herself without a date to her ex-boyfriend Trip's California wedding, homeless, and dumped for a white trashy woman with a name that sounds like a shampoo from the 80's. Didn't anybody tell her that men traditionally wear nothing under those kilts? I always wondered about rash, but whatever.

Brooke's also a lawyer. Not the hardest working lawyer, mind you. Her best friends, Vanessa and Jack, work at the same law firm. Jack's her superior, technically, but lets her Internet shop and leave messages for Douglas to her heart's content. What a guy.

Did I mention that Brooke, in her haste to outdo Trip, told him that not only was Douglas Scottish, but also her fiancé? Girl, that doesn't trump the fact that he's marrying a Hollywood actress, so don't cause more trouble for yourself with an unnecessary lie!

Rather than back out of the wedding like a sane and rational person, Brooke twists Jack's arm into masquerading as Douglas for the weekend at the wedding. He must like wearing skirts. Or having an itchy crotch. Or Brooke. Or maybe he wears drawers under his kilt? Inquiring readers need to know!

Anyway, I really dug the book. It was fast-paced, funny, the characters were well drawn, and I've been there with Brooke's initial predicament. Read it, people!

Scot on the Rocks is a hilarious take on why a girl shouldn't attend her ex-boyfriend's wedding!

Brooke Miller is a funny, ever so quick witted, and intelligent Manhattan lawyer that makes a few hard-knock choices that lead to a complete quandary. Frisky, hopeful, and ever so in love with her sexy Scottish boyfriend, Brenda plans to attend her ex-boyfriend's wedding with boyfriend, Douglas, in tow. The trouble is that her ex-boyfriend, Trip, moved to La-La Land after college and now happens to be marrying one of Hollywood's most famous It girls. Ouch! Brooke plays with fate when she assumes that Douglas is on the verge of a proposal of his own. Days before the wedding, a horrible fight leaves Brooke single and date-less for the wedding. Can one girl face an ex-boyfriend's wedding alone? Can Brooke Miller concoct a plan to save face and win back the man of her dreams? The clock is ticking and there isn't much time until the big day. Using her gifts for research, law, and litigation, Brooke Miller has a plan that might just come close to breaking the law. SCOT ON THE ROCKS is a hilarious and entertaining novel. There are the classic elements of Chick-lit but this book isn't cookie-cut. Brenda Janowitz, has attended 3 ex-boyfriends' wedding and has worked as a lawyer. She has got the experience to create a believable tale of love, madness, and hope.

If you happen to fall in love with Brooke, Vanessa, and Jack, don't fret. Brenda Janowitz signed a two-book deal with Red Dress Ink. She is currently writing the sequel to SCOT ON THE ROCKS that should be published by Red Dress Ink in April of 2008. I have to say I can't wait!

I really enjoyed Scot on the Rocks. Brooke Miller is invited to her ex-boyfriend's wedding. No problem, she has a boyfriend she's crazy about and is sure that they are practically engaged, so she's eager to show him off at the wedding. Problem - he dumps her before the big day. She can't not go to the wedding, and she can't possibly let the first ex know that she now has a new ex. Enter one of her best friends, who she convinces to wear a kilt, speak with a Scottish accent (most of the time) and pretend to be the new ex. I loved the writing style, with Brooke occasionally talking directly to me, the reader, as she justifies something she's just said. When a book makes me laugh out loud, it's a good book. The main characters were well-drawn so I felt like I knew them, which made me care about them.

A great Chick lit book that is a page turner.

Scot on the Rocks is the debut novel by Brenda Janowitz. It is a great Chick lit book. It is a page turner and absolutely hilarious! I did not want it to end. I really loved Brooke and felt like I was right there with her throughout the whole book. Scot on the Rocks is about a New York City attorney named Brooke Miller. She gets invited to her ex-boyfriend's wedding; he is marrying a Hollywood "it girl". Brooke's Scottish boyfriend of two years named Douglas was going to escort her to the wedding but he breaks up with her and immediately becomes engaged to someone else. Brooke comes up with a plan to find a replacement date for the wedding and to get the love of her life back. She enlists the help of her best friend and her co-worker Jack. She soon realizes that Jack is the guy for her. I highly recommend this book. I cannot wait to read the sequel, "Jack with a Twist". It comes out June 24th 2008.

There's nothing NOT to like about this story, Scot on the Rocks. Highly readable and very funny, turning pages of this slim paperback is as easy as watching a feature film about your funniest friend getting in over her head in situation after situation--all the while checking to make sure you're still there, letting her know everything's going to be okay.

This is the story of Brooke, the bumbling attorney at one of NYC's high-power big firms, and her quest to survive her ex-boyfriend's wedding, which takes place in LA. Dumped by her Scottish boyfriend, Douglas, just before the Hollywood A-list event, she manages to talk her best friend, Jack, another attorney (a partner in the making at the firm) into donning a kilt and posing as Douglas at the wedding. And this is where the fun begins as her scheme unravels bit by bit, from lost luggage to stylistic sabotage and a surprising, funny twist around every corner.

Author, Brenda Janowitz, has given this zany character a true likeability and her technique of "talking to the reader" at any given time is refreshing and delightful. It's not the first time I've seen this style, but I have to say, it's the first I've read when each time she (the main character) predicts what I (the reader) am thinking, she's spot on! Ultimately, the outcome is predictable and it's wrapped in a pretty plaid bow; however, all in all, this was simply light-hearted entertainment that I enjoyed very much.

This was a pretty good book although I agree it wasn't as good as the last one I read (Miss Julia Takes Over I think). The last one had more adventure. Anyway, it was still interesting to see what Miss Julia was up to, she is hilarious. The only thing I don't like is the dialect of Lillian, I mean there is a Belks and Little Lloyd is watching Brittney Spears on tv...does anybody still speak that way? Other than that I enjoyed.

This book is better than "Miss Julia's School of Beauty", which I thought was extremely silly. However, I like books about Southern women, so I bought a couple of her other books, including "Throws A Wedding", which I finished today. At least it made more sense than "Miss Julia's School of Beauty". You can check my review on that one. However, I am surprised that none of the reviews I read mentions the anti-Catholic tone to this book. Some of the Hispanic workers in Abbottsville see what they think is an outline of "The Virgin", whom Miss Julia apparently has never heard of, because she is shocked by the word 'virgin' being spoken in front of Little Lloyd. Then, since the image of the Virgin Mary is referred to time and again throughout the second half of the book, it is always referred to in a derogatory manner. The preacher's wife wants to start the prayer chain and rid the town of this 'superstition". Miss Julia can hardly contain herself, she is so full of ire about the belief of the people who believe in that direction. I have never read a so- called light-hearted book of fiction that was so anti-Catholic, or any religion, for that matter. If this is the view of the Presbyterians, they should be ashamed. I am not a Catholic, but I respect their beliefs and the beliefs of other religions. The way the author tears into the Catholic beliefs is beyond belief.

I read these books because I love the feel of them - the small town with its gossips and good Samaritans, Miss Julia with her sense of propriety and justice. The books are not big on plot, but I don't think that's what they're about. The endings are predictable because they are 'feel good' books. I'd be sorely disappointed if the guy didn't get the girl in the end or if I had to read about the demise of any one of the characters. I'm not looking for reality when I pick up a Miss Julia book. I'm looking for a glimpse into a gentler world than the one I see on televison, at the movies, or in many of the bestselling novels out there. The writing is colorful, humorous, and entertaining. I even find myself inspired to do good deeds after reading about one of Miss Julia's exploits. The only problem I have with these books is that I wish there were more of them. I gobble one up and then have to wait so long before a new one comes out. If you liked Andy of Mayberry, you'll love Miss Julia.

When Miss Julia's lawyer, Binkie Enloe, and her boyfriend Coleman decide to get married, Miss Julia cannot hide her joy and relief. Although the happy couple would be satisfied with a quick trip to the Justice of the Peace, Miss Julia will have none of that. She decides to have a full-scale flowers, guests, and music affair at her stately home. This, despite the fact that she has only one week to work on it. As with all Miss Julia books, her best intentions of a prim and proper affair go out the window and hilarious complications arise, including a reluctant bride and the miraculous appearing of Mary on the side of the new Presbyterian Life Center which is being built across the street from Miss Julia's home. There are further complications of a thief in town, and a skittish associate pastor, just to spice up the proceedings. As always with this series, this is a delightful read.

This book is GREAT! It gave me a ton of great ideas and advice on how to plan a successful destination wedding. I've received a lot of positive feedback from my invited guests on every bit of advice I implemented. Things like adding some local currency in the save-the-dates and presenting the wedding as a organized and professional dream vacation have helped more guests commit to attending. There are so many great tips, ideas, and options. I've read three other books on Destination Weddings, but this is the only book you'll need. Kudos to The Knot, they've done it again!

Our daughter is in a wedding and she's never seen one before so we decided to help her with books and things to let her know what's going to happen. This book seemed highly recommended, but I'm not sure if anyone really looked at it from this vantage point. The rhyme in the book is very cute, but it doesn't really ever explain what a flower girl is or does with the exception that she gets to wear a fancy dress. For an older flower girl this might be a cute keepsake, but not for her. I was disappointed with this book.

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old niece who was the flower girl in my May wedding. I gave her the book about seven months before the wedding and it quickly became her favorite book. When she and her family came into town for the wedding she brought the book with her and she had the entire thing memorized! I wrote our actual names above the characters so she would know all the members of the wedding party, which she did. I have the cutest picture of her before the ceremony in the dressing room with her in her flower girl dress reading her flower girl book. I think this book is the perfect start to teaching any little girl to be a flower girl.

Good for a Large Wedding with an MC/DJ; Not as Good for the Small Budget Wedding
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Useful if you are planning a large wedding reception. Very useful if you can afford to hire a super talented DJ/MC and/or a band (as Chapter 7 will scare you away from any other option).

However, for the "intimate wedding" or "destination wedding", like the one I am planning, the book is not as helpful. With a budget of <$10K, only about 40 guests attending, 1 bridesmaid and 1 best man, and guests who would leave a reception rather than run the risk of being singled out to play a game or dance, I did not find a lot of useful tips in the book.

On a positive note, there was one example in the book that included a wedding without dancing where they filled the time with games, instead (which wouldn't work for guests that are scared off by the threat of public humiliation). Plus, there were a couple of nice sentimental ideas such as the Unity Candle and the Anniversary Time Capsule, where the guests filled out advice cards to be placed into a metal container and opened on the couple's 25 wedding anniversary. But those ideas comprised about 3 pages of the book and many of the other suggestions needed an MC to execute.

I still think you can have the best wedding reception...ever! without having a large guest-list, large budget, dancing, games and an MC. Perhaps there are restaurants that specialize in this kind of thing? Perhaps providing icebreakers at the table? Perhaps, if the wedding is small, a large dining table that everyone sits at so everyone feels included? However, you won't find ideas for that kind of wedding in this book.

My advice to you if you are not planning to have a DJ/MC or you have a quiet family is to either avoid the book altogether, or go to a bookstore and flip through it for the occasional sentimental idea to incorporate into your ceremony.

A real guide for all brides!

I have been a wedding entertainer for many years, and this book is by far the most comprehensive and well-written guide on wedding receptions. It contains a lot of great ideas for brides and grooms. It's also a fantastic training tool for DJs and other wedding professionals. I have seen and done lot of the ideas in the book, but there are a few new tricks I learned as well. If you want to have a really fun reception, read this book!

Of all the wedding books and websites I've seen, this book was the best. It really focuses on how to have a fun reception. It was a 1000 times more useful than another book about sending invitations or any of that. This book is a great investment and a fun read.

It truely is the best wedding reception ever... thanks for the great memories

This book is a great buy! Our DJ - Greg Lowder recommended this book and it truely made our wedding a success. My parents friends wrote many thank you cards saying "it was the best wedding they ever attended." My wedding was a memorable event for everyone and I could not have put on a wonderful wedding ceremony and reception without the help of this book.

Best Wedding Book I've Read

This is a fantastic resource for the stylish bride-to-be! In an age of cookie-cutter weddings--or even worse, weddings that look like giant branding opportunities, with the bride and groom's name emblazoned on EVERTHING-- Michelle Rago's approach was like a breath of fresh air.

Rago is one of the top event planners in NYC, and she knows her stuff. I especially liked that the first two chapters are devoted to explaining her method of event planning, step-by-step. She chooses a theme, four colors, and four to six "Elements" for each wedding, and it's fascinating to watch her weave all of the details together in unexpected ways. In the beginning of the book, Michelle also walks you through the process of discovering your point of view and creating your vision, along with tips on how to handle common wedding-planning challenges.

Then she presents, in painstaking detail, ten weddings that she's designed. There are TONS of photgraphs of each wedding to illustrate her methods. For each event, she walks you through the "Four Cornerstones of Wedding Design": The Checklist, The Three S's, The Elements, and the Colors, so you really get a feel for how its done. Her experience in planning and designing hundreds of weddings means that she's able to impart a lot of valuable advice...I learned a lot about wedding planning in general from this book. I also really enjoyed the fact that Michelle has a strong point of view, and she's not afraid to speak her mind regarding what is and is not appropriate for weddings.

By the time I reached the middle of this book, my confidence had increased 100%, and I really began to feel empowered to design my own wedding and have it look like the pages of a bridal magazine. Michelle's writing style is warm and engaging, and although she's a master designer, she never talks down to her readers. The best part of the book for me was the amazing photographs of the bouquets and floral centerpieces. I am in awe of Michelle's floral design talents, and I picked up more than a few ideas to pass on to my own florist!

This book got me on track for my wedding!

Wow! So glad I bought this! The list of core elements and how to come up with them was key to finally getting me to find a focus for wedding style and colors -- worth every penny!! I bought several other pretty books, but couldn't figure out how to make them apply to my wedding, Signature Weddings has truly helped me design a wedding that will be special for us =)

If Anna Wintour were to pick a wedding book that was as visually and editorially pleasing to the bride as Vogue is to fashionista's she would definetly pick Signature Weddings. Not only are the ideas obtainable the book really shows you how to personlize your wedding. After reading this book I feel that I am able to help make my wedding a wonderful memorable event...one filled with love and inspiration. I have only had the book for only a week and have read it from cover to cover.

Great way to introduce a little girl to being a flower girl. My three-year-old loves the story and now is very excited to be in her uncle's wedding.

I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter who is going to be the flower girl in my sister-in-law's wedding. I wanted to be sure she understood what was going to happen that day, and what she'd be doing. This book was a wonderful way to explain the process in a way she definitely understood. She loves reading this book, and we read it every night. I love that it also mentions the ring bearer that "Emily" meets at the wedding, as my daughter will not be meeting the ring bearer until the wedding either. My daughter loves to point out the "real life" versions of each character throughout the book, and even though she doesn't know the ring bearer, we found out his name and she points him out in the book as well (so we're hoping that will keep her from getting as shy when she meets him the day before the wedding!). I considered many of the other flower girl books Amazon has to offer, but I am so glad I chose this one--it had everything I was hoping for!

There are better books.

I gave this book to my flower girl. Her mother thought it was a good idea because it she had a lot of questions. The flower girl did not say another word about it though -- she liked the memory book I got her much better: When I Was a Flower Girl. I was glad I got the book because it was cute but there is probably something better out there.

There are much better books out there for Flower Girls. As other reviewers have already stated, it's WAY too specific (the narrator has to miss a soccer game), and identical in wording to the Ring Bearer book by the same author. I found little to nothing cute or appealing about the illustrations, too.

Very disappointed!

The cute title lured me in to buying this book although the price was much higher than the other flower girl books listed on amazon.com. The only other thing I liked about this book was the introductory page. There is a place to write the date of the wedding, bride & groom's name along with the flower girl's name. From that point on the book was a pure disappointment. I had ordered 4 different books on being a flower girl and this one ranks at the bottom of my list! It lacks a good explanation of the role of a flower girl, has no story line, and will not keep my 4.5 year old granddaughter's interest for one minute. I tend to think that if something cost more it will be better...not in this case! Here is a perfect book on being a flower girl with a fun story and explanation on what happens before, during and afer a wedding. If you are looking for a book to help your little flower girl understand her role buy this:

Kids don't have to be preparing for a wedding to appreciate the positive, inspiring words and images of the book. I love the narative which includes things like sports, science and entrepreneurship along with the classic "girl" stuff. I even read the book to my two boys so that they can understand that girls are a lot like them in experiences and aspirations.

Was a little disappointed with this book selection. Bought as a little gift for my flower girls and although they were 7,5 and 3, it was really only meant for the 3-yr-old. Nice illustrations...just didn't care for the list of 10 things!

How Great to Have These Books at My Wedding!

I was recently married and was given these books by a friend. I had several children in my ceremony and I wanted to make the day as special for them as it was for me. The faces on my little flower girls lit up when I gave the books to them at the rehearsal dinner. They read and re-read them that night; they would not put them down! The day of the wedding the girls could not wait to perform their duties and I honestly feel that the books helped them understand the significance of the occasion. Even better, they were good as gold and knew exactly what to do. These books are great and were a wonderful way to wholeheartedly include the girls in the ceremony, as well as give them something fun to do at the boring rehearsal dinner!
