Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1HTD6NMK6E1E2 This is one of the better textbooks I have
on the subject. One will have to put the
time in but the book does a
good job explaining concepts.
If I may suggest something that
has helped my studies greatly, a little book called
Don't Like to Read, Then Don't, Listen!: How to
Turn Any Type of Text Into Audio Files That Can
Be Read to You!. I know that many students out
there are like me and would rather listen to
material than have to read it themselves. I use
programs like the one that is reading this review
to have my texts read to me. This is a god send
for me. One can get this title on amazon.

The material was straightforward and easy to understand, although it may have helped that our school requires us to take calculus first. I found the examples helpful...however it was brought to my attention that our faculty likes some of their "own" formulas better than the shall we say long, drawn-out tedious formulas of the book. Same answers, just different ways of getting them. Anyhow, excited to buy and resell this book through Amazon! Even more excited to be through with that class! :D

Statistics for Business and Economics (with CD-ROM)

This book is geared toward business majors who need to have a solid understanding of statistical data as it relates to business concepts. Algebra was a pre-requisite when I took this course, but being familiar with algebra and its concepts won't help you much. Topics are not explained thoroughly which leaves the task of finding the missing pieces to understand the concept to the reader. Working the sample problems provides you with an answer, but doesn't walk you through the steps to solving the problem.

The book also skips over some topics that are in other broader based basic statistics books. Some of which I feel are important for business majors to know as they work with their clients, who may not be business majors. I had to purchase another book to de-code what this one was saying. Once I did, I was able to understand the material better.

This book is not for people who don't know anything about accounting. Yes, it's a good book, but the language used is very high-level and you couldn't understand it if you weren't an accountant. I suggest this book for people who are already accountants or have accounting degrees and want to review for the CPA exam. But for new students who just want accounting for electives or whatnot, like me, it's not a good book. I didn't understand anything I read and because of this book, I have changed my major to something non-business related. Avoid classes that use this book.

I found the international version for over 1/2 the price on ebay on through Amazion resellers. The lone diffs between both editions are the end of chapters exercises such as Case Studies and Film examples are missing. Hence, after chapter 1, pager #s are different. No big deal. I also liked the softcover edition since it weighs far less. Page quality / stock / ink is excellent.

I am a huge fan of Ellen Hopkins' four other books: Crank, Glass, Burned, and Impulse. I've been awaiting Identical all summer, having preordered it in June.

As I began reading the book, I instantly loved it. I was so intrigued with the family history, and I found myself rooting for Kaeleigh to tell her secret from page one.

When the twist was presented towards the end of the book, however, I was severly disappointed. Ellen Hopkins definitely let me down.

Review Date: 2008-09-03
I am a high school librarian and I have read all of Hopkins' previous books so I was looking forward to this one and started it as soon as it arrived. After a few chapters, reading about the incest, I was wondering what the purpose of the book was. A friend pointed out that it was a "mirror" book -- meant to reveal how a student could see herself and her life or an event through the eyes of a character and can see how that character acts or deals with a particular situation. Hopefully to encourage that student to take steps to solve the problem. I can't write much more here because whatever I say in response to what I read would be spoilers as the book moves toward a conclusion that just fell short and ended up being somewhat unbelieavable mostly because a lot of the book took place in school or around other people. The supporting characters, especially the mother, are stereotypes and not at all sympathetic. Yes I know that many awful things happen behind closed doors in families and if by reading this book even one girl gets the courage to step forth and tell on her abuser, then I guess the author will have achieved her goal. Other than that, be warned, there's a lot of descriptive sex, drugs, alcohol abuse, suicide attempts, self-mutilation, anorexia and bulimia -- I mean all of these behaviors are exhibited -- and other mature scenes both on and off-page.

Another great Hopkins novel

Ellen Hopkins has created yet another page turner with a great twist! Her ability to get into the troubled teenage psyche of her characters is unbelievable and enables the reader to immediately feel a connection to them. I won't get into the plot as other reviewers have already done an awesome job of that, but I can say this book will make you want to re-read,once you get to the end! Her writing style is very readable, even though she writes in verse, but don't miss the subtle way she ties the lives of the twins together. The sub poems and mirrored poems are eye-catching and tell another, very intriguing part of the story. So, as much as you want to race to the conclusion, take the time to absorb the well-planned and oh-so-well written verse that Hopkins has brought to Identical.

I'm an Ellen Hopkins fan, but this book just fell short for me...

So, I was psyched for Identical, being a huge Ellen Hopkins fan. I pre-ordered it, and it showed up on my doorstep this morning. I eagerly began reading it, and figured out the book's biggest plot twist less than a hundred pages in.

I wanted to scream at Ellen Hopkins. Her "M. Night Shamyalan-esque" twist should not come as a surprise to anybody who has read Crank/Glass, or ever watch an episode of Heroes. I'm sure that figuring out the surprise early is part of my reason for disliking this book, but I know it is not the only reason.

SPOILERS AHEAD (minor, I won't give away the 'surprise' but there will be spoilers.

I felt like for a book that was supposed to be about sexual abuse, it was less about the father/daughter relationship and more about out of control teens in the vibe of Crank/Glass. The parts of the book about this relationship were great, but they were few and far between. The history about how the father became who he is today was fascinating, and Ellen Hopkins really should have played that up more. Another thing, in my opinion, that she could have done to improve the plot would have been to continue the story after the protagonist enters rehab. We know she can write about recovery (Impulse) and it would have added to the plot in my opinion.

All in all, this book was 'Eh.' It was a disappointment, as I have come to expect more from Ellen Hopkins. Consequently, I will still be a fan after reading this book, but I won't advertise it as I have with her other works. It seems as if this summer is the summer of gigantic book disappointments. First Breaking Dawn, now this...I really hope Brisingr (the last of the trifecta of great summer books, following BD and Identical) is great.

The Compulsive Reader's Reviews

Review Date: 2008-08-26
There are so many similarities between Kaeleigh and Raeanne. They're identical twins. They share an absentee politician of a mother, and lonely drunk of a father. They both have had a painful childhood, and for both, it all began with a gruesome accident. But the source of that pain is entirely different for each girl.

For Kaeleigh, it's the pain of a father who loves her too much, who loves her as no father should love his child. Raeanne's pain is the feeling of being unloved and unwanted, except by a string of sleazy boyfriends with an abundance of alcohol and drugs. Each girl knows that what they're experiencing is wrong, but they know nothing else. And unless someone can do something to bring about a change, their pain is all they'll ever know.

Identical is depressing, disturbing, and yet strangely engrossing and electrifying. Through her irresistible and varying poetry, Hopkins coaxes readers into the story, just far enough in for Raeanne and Kaeleigh grasp on, taking you on an unforgettable ride through their lives, and showing us their convoluted--yet curiously levelheaded--reasoning and their innermost thoughts. The beautiful and innovative poetry gets right down to what makes the twins tick in a frank and straightforward style that is not necessarily comforting, but is gritty and real. Full of passion, pain, remorse, and, amazingly, love, Identical is one of those books that will make you gasp theatrically at the end, and then want to immediately re-read the entire thing with new eyes--it is a book that will cause you to think.

Good writing style, terrible concept: Post-Civil War, President Grant approves a program to marry off women from the dregs of society (ie, mental institutions, jails, ex-slaves, alcoholics, etc) to a tribe of Native Americans in order to create a mixed-race. Supposedly, this is meant to make the assimilate the Native Americans into our new American culture within a generation as the women reproduce with the Native Americans.

It's probably one of the worst historical fiction books I've ever read. Immensely demeaning to women, the protagonist is probably supposed to be a spirited woman far ahead of her time. I found her insulting and could never connect with her on any level. The author clearly means to present Native Americans in a sympathetic light, as well, but only succeeds in perpetuating too many stereotypes.

I'd like to be able to say that the storyline improved by the end of the book, but unfortunately, I never made it that far.

Wow, this book was so bad I actually feel angry at the friend who recommended it. As other reviewers here have said, the book is poorly written (full of cliches, uses a format that is unconvincing), the characters are one-dimensional (embarrassing stereotypes, unconvincing motivations), and the dialogue and plot read like a third-rate romance novel. I am stunned by 1) the terribly shallow presumptions about women's interior lives, thoughts, and motivations; 2) the corny treatment of love and sex; 3) the voluminous, vicarious depictions of rape and; 4) the insanely retrograde ethnic stereotypes, not only of the "brides" but of the Indians (noble savages to drunken savages). Finally, the motivations of the main character just do not ring true, and she is the only character who is flushed out enough to have any interior life. I can't help but think that the author just lacks imagination (including the ability to imagine another person's motivations, but also an ability to create a world outside of stale, rehashed tropes). I'm actually mad at myself for wasting the time to finish the book.

This Story Will Raise Emotions You Never Knew You Had

Review Date: 2008-08-07
In 1854, President Ulysses Grant attended a Native American peace conference during which a Cheyenne chief named Little Wolf offered to trade 1,000 of his horses for 1,000 white brides for his tribesmen. Little Wolf hoped that the white women would help his people assimilate to the white man's way of life before there were no more buffalo to hunt. Grant rejected this proposition, but Jim Fergus' novel, One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd, follows what would have happened if Grant's response had been in the affirmative. Grant's fictional approval was based on the hopes that the women would convince the Cheyenne to move to reservations so that white settlers could peacefully live upon land formerly inhabited by the Native Americans and exploit the land for its resources.

May Dodd is in the first group of white women to marry and live among the Cheyenne. She writes in her journal, "...we are contractually obligated to bear but one child with our Indian husbands, after which time we are free to go, or stay as we choose. Should we fail to become with child, we are required to remain with our husbands for two full years, after which time we are free to do as we wish...or, at least, so say the authorities." All the women who sign up for the Brides for Indians program do so voluntarily, some to escape poverty, others to win freedom from jail, and still others, like May, to win release from a lunatic asylum. May, a woman of good breeding, had been committed to the asylum by her parents who felt she must be insane after she cohabitated with a man below her social stature and bore him two children.

Through diary entries and letters, Fergus' story traces the adventures of May and her new-found friends as they leave Chicago bound for the Nebraska prairie and their Cheyenne husbands. May's writings vividly capture the colorful personalities of her companions, along with their dialects--the Irish brogues of the Kelly sisters, the southern drawl of Daisy Lovelace, the Swiss cant of Gretchen Fathauer.

While the women hope to teach American customs to the Cheyenne, as months pass, it is apparent that for some, the reverse occurs: Many of the brides adopt the Cheyenne way of life, though others find reasons to defect.

Through brilliant writing that includes romance, violence, and the challenges of Mother Nature, Fergus shows us May's inner struggle of straddling the worlds of the white man and the Cheyenne.

Quill says: This story will raise emotions you never knew you had. Read it.

I am a non-accounting student in an MBA program, with little desire to be an accountant. I realize that I need to understand this but inthe course of using this in a distance ed course for transfer, with no instruction from the lousy prof, I have found myself referring to Schaum's and other accounting made easy books to understand terms and concepts. This book is poorly designed in that if you are examining a problem, it should show all the components of the problem on the pages facing you, not having to refer back to data covered 4-5 pages ago. The constant flipping back and forth is most annoying. Accounting as I now understand it is less complicated than this book makes it out to be. One can use real world examples with a more descriptive understanding of where a set of numbers goes after some transaction, all the arrows with no descriptions is also confusing. I think that Warren Reeve and Fess need to look at accounting from the beginning student perspective as opposed to approaching it from a professorial point of view. Think about how you had to start.... with no concepts or knowledge and start from there.

On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
