Great reference on real leanReview Date: 2007-10-05
We intentionally didn't begin our lean transformation in our large service orgnization until we had this book because we saw the folly in trying to implement a bunch of lean tools without the necessary management system.
We have visited some Tier 1 Toyota suppliers and Kaizen really means continuous improvement not a succession of week-long projects that many big-time consultants and organizations focus on.
This book is our defacto lean transformation handbook and I am glad to see that it has become a standard reference for at least two MBA programs in the area.

Terrific Feng Shui Book!Review Date: 2008-06-20
Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life is one book I read to learn Feng Shui. I also read others--many of them were too "far out. " Move Your Stuff, however, is a terrific Feng Shui book. Concise and easy to understand is at the core of why this book is so good.
Last year, I used Move Your Stuff and Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet when I moved into my new home. Harmonious Environment is Feng Shui + green living + great design and the books work wonderfully together. The Feng Shui approach is slightly different from the authors and they both make sense.
My home is now gorgeous. The Feng Shui techniques I used helped me land the job of my dreams, brought my husband and I closer and has erased the friction between (some)family members.
I use the techniques on some of my clients, too and have equally as impressive results.
Right on!
Easy to Follow...and it Works!Review Date: 2008-08-09
This little book by Karen Rauch Carter is the best feng shui book I've read. Use it and go to work making the changes that bring love, money, respect and happiness.
Carter's simple power tools are easy to incorporate into your life. She begins with the feng shui toolbox, explaining chi energy, the bagua, cures for what ails your space, etc. and then goes on to explain all aspects of feng shui cures for your home, your life and your well-being.
Power tools for prosperity might be as simple as clearing your clutter and adding something purple to the prosperity corner of your home or a single room or as complex as diagraming your home's layout. Either way, her methods are fun and interesting, and whether you choose to incorporate her ideas or not, you will find the book a fascinating read.
I personally used this book to de-clutter and decorate my home and can attest to the wonderful results.
Very highly recommended.

A simple and profound method for achievementReview Date: 2007-02-17
This method has helped me overcome my greatest dissatisfaction at work and I've experienced amazing results. I must warn, however, that despite being simple it entails quite a bit of self observation and continued effort. But this in itself is a huge asset.
I highly recommend this book for anybody experiencing even the slightest dissatisfaction at work or in life.
Finally Understanding Change Resistance as Useful InformationReview Date: 2006-07-11
While it is designed to be used for workplace issues, it can also be used in other aspects of life. This book is clear, well-written, and so easily accessible it can even be used as a workbook. In fact the authors recommend a study group, and give clear steps to applying the model and specific case studies of participants who have successfully used it to create change. The significant difference between this and all other "managing change" books is a respectful recognition of competing commitments. That is, we don't need to conquer resistance, we need to understand it as a legitimate and experienced based reluctance designed for self-protection. Only then can the source and the solution be brought to light. This way of thinking is a treasure.

Excited!Review Date: 2008-08-05
I am excited to read this book. It is not about Mary and Martha. It is about how God changes us and we become pliable to His spirit. I have not gotten very far. But so far this book is exciting to read. It is not about being an introvert or an extrovert. Read it and see what God does to you.

Bo Knows Football - Ram Knows Know-How!Review Date: 2008-05-10
"Know How" will be most useful for business executives, especially C-level execs. Nevertheless, those in middle management or those who aspire to a management position cannot help but benefit from the book.
At times, it is tempting to see Charan's recitation as a list of Boy Scout virtues. At other times, it is not easy to discern just how practitioners are to acquire such qualities. Despite his guru and quasi-celeb status, Charan writes in a lucid style that is (relatively) jargon-free.
Reading and heeding "Know How" will turbo-charge your business skill sets.
Good Solid Common Sense Nicely ArrangedReview Date: 2008-04-09
Therefore the essential points -- basical arbitrary but nonetheless germane -- are as follows.
1. Positioning and Repositioning. Keep asking questions -- ignorance is your friend -- not your enemy -- keep leaning and asking questions.
2. Pinpointing External Change. Do not be static... regard change as part of business
3. Leading the Social System. Viewing your company as an organic part of society and treating it in similar fashion. Business is different -- but it ain't that different. You need combine human traits with business acuman -- the two are not mutually exclusive and people who treat them as such set themselves up for a downfall.
4. Judging People. Match people with positions.
5. Molding a Team. Bringing together good teams and making allowances for their idiosyncracies and not pounding them into theory.
6. Setting Goals. Basically being realistic -- forget about Wallstreet.
7. Setting Priorities. Again realistically .
8. Dealing with Forces beyond the Market. A particularly notable section on dealing with social forces such as human rights and environmental movements and how they impact upon decision making -- the lesson -- never ever ignore them.
There is the regular stories in this book - a late night drink under a starry sky with a recalcitrant manager, a moment of clarity with a person who realises their true worth in a company that values them as an individual and does not try to pound them into a corporate mold. It's there... some intercultural allusions as well.
Of course the common sense attributes of tenacity, and ambition and self-confidence are the defining attributes, but Charan does not succumb to the idea that management is infallible -- in fact Charan propounds an organic philosophy of doubt as the road to enlightenment and also good management practises. But you need to be open, realistic and have a real idea to learn everything posssible and this in Charan's way of thinking encompasses a notion of the broad liberal arts individual with open-mindedness and a passion for life outside the boardroom.
There is not much revolutionary here, but the thoughts are clearly outlined and serve as a nice antidote to notions of corporate excess, greed and the know-nothingness exhibited far too often by business people big and small.
Good work!

Foundational Book for All Change Implementation ProfessionalsReview Date: 2008-09-22
I was fortunate enough to spend a week studying with Mr. Bridges at the CapeCod Institute in 2002 after the launch of his sequel, The Way of Transition. The course was targeted for the helping professions to offer perspective on how people cope with life change and more importantly, how we can support them through it. I was one of the few management consultants in the room amongst pastors, nurses, therapists, teachers, non-profit directors, etc. Needless to say, I was blown away by how limited my view was on the human condition and by how important it is to hold it up, honor it, and respect it both inside and outside of work.
The concepts here are authentic, simple, and compassionate and I believe that they apply to intense, complex, chaotic work environments like large-scale strategic, organizational change, and cross-enterprise initiatives. I strongly believe that as consultants and coaches, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to support our clients by:
*helping them self-identify with how they are dealing with transition while leading change
*reminding them of their compassion for others as they get out their swords for a proverbial "land grab"
*providing their stakeholders with a framework and language to relate to as people vs. work
*teaching executives that the best strategy is to "go slow, to go fast" when it comes to building trust and gaining productivity
So, here's to Mr. Bridges for the legacy of human understanding and compassion in terms that we can all understand and implement for ourselves and for others.
