I didn't know amazon offered video reviews, but then I'm too pretty for that so it's probably better this way. Now look folks, go ahead and lean in closer... If you don't know that you're a favorite of God's by now then you should stay away from this book! We favorites used to be valued as something "somewhat exclusive" whereas now it appears everyone is welcomed. The issue continues to be among our fellow annointed who keep giving all the goods away by telling all you average folks more secrets concerning The Gospel of Jesus Christ -- and this aint about that not so secret book oprah pushes either. This is about my penthouse, in this life, and who will live in the building if everybody is up there with me? That aint fair! What's wrong with living on 12, or 2 for that reason, or is there anything wrong with the ground floors? Prosperity teachings aren't about money, they're about obedience so who's gone live on all those empty floors below mine? Must everyone receive more Blessing from Jesus by reading this book only to declare that my floor belongs to them as well? Look, I don't recall signing up for this so please stay away from this book, and Disciples like Jesse, and Creflo, and Kenneth,(both of em) and Joyce, and Bill, and Leroy, and John and Jerry, who Christ has already prophesied as among His final 12 preparing all of us for His return. See, why don't they write books about that business instead of telling everyone mine? I don't even have mine yet and at this rate we're all gone get penthouses together! So go and read opree's silly book and please leave this one to bless Members Only, (that used to mean something) thank you very much.

Our culture tries to ignore this normal and important aspect of life, but this author offers some excellent and practical ways to navigate the uncharted waters of life after loss. Everyone who reads this book will benefit.
Deeply sensitive and respectful, strongly acknowledging how deeply personal grief really is.

Next to the Dr Kubler-Ross book ON GRIEF AND GRIEVING, this has been the most helpful book I have read on the subject of grieving from a deep loss. The book gives the reader the permission to grieve that our larger society has often denied him. Emphasized over and over again is the theme that: "Going through the experience is the only lasting and healthy way out of grief." The book advises those who grieve: "Never apologize for grieving. Remind yourself as often as needed that the very worst kind of loss is always yours" and to "Learn to acknowledge that your loss is worthy of grief." The griever can further admit to himself: "The loss I experienced is a major event in my life. Perhaps it is the worst thing that will ever happen to me. But is not the end of my life. I can still have a full and rewarding life. Grief has taught me much, and I will use it to be a better person than I was before my loss." In this way those who grieve can be left a sense of hope, not to be forever devastated. The book concludes with some valuable appendices on the role of nutrition in grief recovery, words that describe feelings and information on how one can form their own support group. Not only was it deeply comforting to read this book, (I lost my own father to aortic stenosis five months ago) but I also can see where it could be immensely useful for mental health professionals to use in their practice. I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker employed by the Department of Defense for over twenty years most recently working with a number of those individuals who lost family members in Iraq. I can see suggesting they read this book themselves and it being of great comfort to them. I would strongly recommend this book to all who have suffered a significant loss in their life.

This book was recommended to me by a co-worker, so I could learn to live with the idea of an unforeseen divorce hitting me like a speeding freight train. My life took a turn I NEVER saw coming and totally threw me into a deep depression and one of dispair. When the book arrived, I jumped into reading it immediately, so I could find help for my raw emotions, and try to get myself out of my very low funk. Although death is a greater challenge, divorce can be equally challenging when you don't have the opportunity to work things out with your spouse. The book provided a wonderful "support system" for me, as it reminded me that I was NOT alone in my feelings and how much the loneliness hurts - every day. Yes, you truly cannot see that things will get better when you are in the moment. People can tell you that, but until you experience it for yourself, you cannot believe you will get there. I do recommend this book for people who are experiencing a drastic change in their lives - whether a death of a loved one, divorce, moving or job change. It can provide you some semblance of strength to help you move forward!!! And when your emotions are so very raw, strength is certainly a good choice to help you on your journey.

Finally! A book that understands that Grieving is a process and no two people grieve the same way. Having encouraging words and sharing anecdotal stories really makes this book one that should be given to everyone who grieves. I have done many of the suggestions and it helps. It really helps. God bless Paster Deits for writing this!

This book was given to me after my husband died. I could not believe what it was telling me as I made my way through my troubled time. The book provided a timeline for me, a way to look ahead or back to see if I was "on track" to my new "normal" life. It provided a pathway for me to follow. The book kept reassuring me along my path. I have given the book to many people, just to let them know that they are alright in what they are doing. I keep buying a copy for myself but the book keeps leaving me to "help" another person. I am so glad that my friend found this book for me. I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent book to help someone who is dealing with grief. It also lets you know that "you are not alone."

Be your own therapist!?

Author and therapist Bill O'Hanlon has written a practical and compassionate book on how to get out of your ruts. I don't think that this book holds any threat of putting therapists out of business. His point seems to be that sometimes making small changes in behavior patterns can help unshackle people from dysfunctional behavior patterns.
Your past does not shackle you from making positive changes. Small changes can yield big payoffs.
Though it may turn off some, I also liked O'Hanlon's chapter on tapping into spirituality as a way to get untracked. He does this in a non-dogmatic way.
DOTD is a bit like chicken soup for the psyche - it won't hurt and it may help. Worth a read!!

I was able to pick out a thing or two from this book, but nothing that would really be especially helpful for more than a very brief period of time. I can see how this book might be helpful for someone who is simply stuck in a rut, but not necessarily for someone who is dealing with trauma. Depending on the situation of the reader, there are a few 'band-aid' type solutions that could provide a temporary distraction and it might also be helpful for someone who just needs, as the title states, some ideas for a bit of something different.

After reading a bunch of novels in a row, I decided it was time for a non-fiction book. I'd had this one sitting on my shelf for a few years and figured I'd give it a try. The title had always appealed to me.
It was easy reading and had quite a few helpful ideas in it. Although the author applies the concept to many areas of life, the title really says it all: If you're experiencing a problem in your life, or if there's something wrong, don't keep doing the same things over and over and expect different results. "Do one thing different" and it will lead to other changes in your life that may or may not take care of the problem. If it does, great. Problem solved. If not, do another thing different and see what happens. Often, our repetitive, unconscious actions are responsible for a great deal of the difficulties in our lives, or so goes the theory.
That's the gist the theory, though its stretched out into a book. I found it somewhat repetitive after a while, though I like the concept and plan to apply it (in fact, already have to some success) whenever I notice some area of my life that could use some fixing up.
As a concept, I give it five stars; as a book, because it is watered down and stretched out in order to justify its price, I can only give it three stars. Still, the title idea is an interesting one...one I think anyone could benefit from at one point or another in their lives.

What a stupid idea. Small change makes what? .... more small change. Incrementalism is the enemy. When a tsunami is bearing down, shifting the beach chairs a few feet won't do. "Ordinary" people can make huge changes. Just avoid this book and any more of such disempowered thinking.

Written by sociology instructors Ellis Jones Ph.D., Ross Haenfler Ph.D. and Brett Johnson Ph.D., The Better World Handbook: Small Changes That Make A Big Difference is a guide for ordinary people to taking steps in their lives that help contribute to big changes for the better worldwide. Chapters cover how to make a difference by choosing the right bank, buying groceries that minimize negative environmental impact, building strong relationships among friends and family, fostering a socially responsible workplace, voting and getting involved in politics, using alternative forms of transportation and reducing driving to use as little gasoline as reasonably possible, how to get involved in an organization espousing a cause one cares about, and much more. Handy quick-reference icons, numerous online resources, extensive notes, a helpful checklist, and an index round out this one-of-a-kind guide to not only improving oneself, but also improving the world at large. Highly recommended.

I've used several college religion texts through the years. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. EXPERIENCING THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS is no exception. I especially like the chapters on Hinduism and modern religious expressions. This book comes close to labeling post-modernity without actually going out on a limb to predict the future. The last chapters elevate this book beyond the norm for religious textbooks. The author includes a personal experience (which I like) in each chapter and a hypothetical experience for the reader (which I find distracting) opens each chapter. It doesn't put quite as much emphasis on basic (oral) religions as some texts. For instance, I wish it had a little more on Native American and Traditional African religions.
This is an excellent text for the instructor who is able to bring supplemental material into the classroom. Someone embarking on a private study of world religions should not feel as if the surface has been scratched until more than one text is read. I also reviewed RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD by Hopfe & Woodward. The two texts compliment each other nicely.

I had to read this book for a class, but I actually ended up enjoying it. As others have noted, it's a very quick read. But the pages it has are packed with excellent insights and observations gleaned from a number of studies and surveys. The ADKAR model is solid, and even if not followed to the letter will still give you the basics of what you need to consider when planning for and implementing change in an organization.
All the project plans in the world won't lead to a successful change if the people affected are neglected.

This is neither a great nor bad book on the subject of change management. It is written in a succinct way and is therefore a quick read. If you are reading a number of texts on the subject, you won't go wrong adding this one to the list, but make sure you read some others alongside it. It does make a number of good points (particularly about senders and receivers of messages), but the examples aren't as powerful as other texts I have read.

This book is essentially an expanded PowerPoint presentation, and I mean that in the best possible way. It is direct, to-the-point, practically applicable, and based on a solid change model (ADKAR). Note that it is a mere 90 pages or so of text, so it is a quick read. If you are a consultant or looking to apply change management principles tomorrow, this is the perfect book for you. The case studies are, however, laughable. One has to do with someone wanting to repave a parking lot and hasn't gotten the buy-in of all the surrounding business owners -- hardly the strategic change some of us are faced with managing.

The environment in which organisations operate is very dynamic, forcing firms to continually adapt and modify themselves to enable them to survive and prosper. Such an environment requires that managers are adequately equipped with change management skills. This book equips readers with the basic skills and knowledge required to manage the change process sensitively and effectively.
This is a small and well presented book on change management. It provides advice and guidance to change agents and managers involved in the change process to enable them to cope with the initiation and implementation of change in organisations, departments or teams. The book gives practical advice and techniques on managing all aspects of the change process.
The author did a good job of using several interesting and useful case studies which are very helpful in reinforcing the message. The reader is advised to particularly consider the people side of change to ensure that the process is a success.

It's a bit unusual for me to agree with customer reviews that both praise and criticize a book, but in this case I do. On the one hand, Rollnick et al, have done an amazing job of applying motivational interviewing and stages of change theory to the short interchanges common with patients in a medical setting. For those readers already well-versed in stages of change, this is an excellent and thought-provoking approach. I believe many "counselors" of various stripes would benefit from the applications advocated in this book.
On the other hand, I found the theoretical foundation wholly inadequate. While I appreciated the attempts of the authors to carefully distinguish between evidence-based substantiation of their guidelines and the weaker suggestions based on clinical practice, I felt that there was a preponderance of the latter.
I was also overwhelmed by the repetition included in the three final "application" chapters. Surely there is a better way to present this material! Frankly, the final chapters are so tedious to read that I suspect the average medical professional tends to conclude this volume with a less-than-enthusiastic feeling regarding the guidance.
My advice is to read through chapter 5, at the most, and to consult chapters 6-8 only after encountering specific problems in applying the techniques provided.

This book gave helpful perspectives regarding doctor-patient communication, but was not very enlightening. The problem might be that it was written from the perspective that the doctor is always correct, and the patient is always some poor sap who needs to be enlightened and trained as you would a child. I don't see this book awakening the human within some budding physician and transforming the physician into some effective communicator. The worst part was how many pages it took to convey helpful information.
This is surprising because the motivational interviewing video training from these authors is exemplary. Maybe the video approach did not transfer well to book.
I gave it more than one star because it does have good strategies in it, and I believe reading it would be better than reading nothing.

Health Behavior Change dramatically simplifies and expands the Motivational Interviewing counseling style techniques underlined in Motivational Interviewing by Miller and Rollnick (1991). Health Behavior Change is very easy to read and provides a practical menu of "tools" that could assist individuals thinking and/or committed to behavioral change. Although the authors' targets are medical professionals, the book is a must for everyone involve in health care promotion and/or counseling (prevention workers, outreach workers, treatment advocates, drug and alcohol counselors, psychotherapists). It is also a great book to pass along to family members and anyone concerned in assisting others to move in the direction of change. The most important message: when we are moving in the direction of behavioral change, we need helpers who care, remain non-judgmental and help us tip the balance towards healthier behaviors. Assisting people to set their own realistic goals --however small, is crucial to facilitate meaningful, long lasting change. Love this book!!!!

This anthology offers great writing, cover to cover. It's all here--gender politics, sexual politics, school politics, adoption politics, religious politics, body politics, community politics, family politics, social politics--but with a mix of tone and approach that makes the book a real pleasure to read. Rather than weighing you down with the utter importance of it all, these essayists--who range from politicians (Nancy Pelosi, Benazir Bhutto), activists (Cindy Sheehan, Rebecca Walker), and other terrific writers, both known and less well-known-- make you want to think critically, get up off the couch, make a phone call, sign a petition. Do good in the world, and teach your children how to do good, also.
And that part's not so hard, really. These essays remind us that our children are our constant witnesses; we should take subtle advantage of that while they are still at home, and also teach other's children when they're in our company.
Share this with the mothers you know, and their partners, friends, and children, and remind them: it's time to get political.

In this collection, Shari MacDonald Strong and well-known contributors such as Nancy Pelosi, Benazir Bhutto, Barbara Kingsolver, and Anne Lamott remind us that the most basic things in our lives - food, clothing, shelter - are a matter of political concern. These essays are lively and well-written and cover a variety of issues that are of interest to mothers, and that should be of interest to all. In some of my favorite essays, Jennifer Graf Groneberg writes about defending her right to homeschool her son who has Down syndrome; Helaine Olen remembers mean mothers; Ona Gritz owns her disability, Violeta Garcia-Mendoza writes about international adoption, and Sarah Werthan Buttenwieser ponders the ethics of hiring a Republican babysitter.
Right wing Christian fundamentalist mothers would probably hate this book, but others will no doubt find themselves stirred up enough to vote for change.

Maybe I should have known better because the audio book is only two CD's but I was disappointed that it's not the entire book on CD. These two CD's contain a fraction of information from the book. I think the book is so full of essential information that the audio CD's only contain a small piece of the author's subject.
Nothing new or not obvious here

It's not that the information insn't correct, but it certainly isn't insightful. This seems like a mental exercise for a professor who just wants to get his name in print. Right away you're in trouble becuase he has you go through an exercise and then rate your optimism to see if this book could help you. if you are low on optimism, you need this book, if you are balanced, you need this book and if you are very optimistic, you still need this book.
My view, try to see things from others perspective and find out what your unique service and contribution is to a given situation and ulitmaley your whole life. The rest will fall into place.

I received this book about a year ago and I think it is the best self help book on the market. It has been fantastic and has helped me so much by giving me scientifically proven techniques to change the way I look at events or situations.
I use to read a few self help books to stay positive and ended up giving them up as I found they never gave me any help and where filled with 'take care of your self, your precious' and `say these nice things to yourself and you will have a better life'. I suppose that is all well and good but at the end of the day it never really helped me or changed anything. They could never snap me out of a downward spiral however the techniques in this book can. This book gave me concrete ways to help myself in situations where I get emotional or upset and it is something that will always need to be worked on but if you do it then it gets easier and you are in more control and you are a more rational and effective person.
The book is easily understood even though alot of it is scientific and best of all the principals are backed up by studies so the book has validation. All of the principals are pretty basic and leave you feeling `well of course' however they really do help and like most books it brings your attention to things you may already know, but may not apply. If you enjoy going to psychologists and raking up all the bad events of your life and leave with no way to help yourself in these emotional times when you are alone, then you may not appreciate this book. While it is great to get help, it is important to get the right help and understand why something may not be helping you. Cognitive therapy seems to put the responsibility back on the individual, while you may not have chosen the way you choose to perceive your life (usually from parents) it is your responsibility to change this and to make the long term commitment to change.
I have also read 2 other books by Martin Seligman and I also found these great. It is not essential to read all of these books but I found Learned Optimism so interesting, and that I got so much out of reading it and using the techniques that I wanted to see what was included in the other two books. The other books hold similar material however go into greater detail in other ways like talking about the angry person and why they are like that etc... I would recommend any of these books to everyone as there is something there for all, it would probably be best though to start with Learned Optimism.

I haven't gotten all the way through it, because there are alot of assignments, where you have to stop the CD. I usually listen in my car, so it's taking me a while to finish. I'd recommend buying the book too, which I haven't purchased yet.
