Great book and a short easy read packed with information and things that are easy to put into practice but that one might not have thought about before. Both my 13 year old son and 10 year old daughter (almost done) have read it too. Although the reviews from them were not great, I already see where it has made a difference and we can talk about how to put it into action for the better since we have the same foundation to work off of. I can't think of a single person I know who would not gain some positive benefit from spending the small amount of time reading it. Happy improving of yourself!!

Terrific Personal Development Primer
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
As a student of many (large #) of personal development books ("he who 'needs', reads"), I was skeptical that this book could offer more. And while I don't think there was much new in this book that I hadn't read in much deeper tomes, I think Keller did a terrific job in synthesizing the key concepts in a thin 130-page book that is an easy and quick read. I equate it to a condensed version of a number of the best personal development books that I have read.

Author makes excellent use of "famous person" quotations to support his points ("No Pressure, No Diamonds"-Mary Case; "The things that hurt, instruct" - Benjamin Franklin). He uses good anecdotes and personal reflections to keep the book flowing and has a large number of practical and useful recommendations. Here are the section and chapter titles:

Part I: Succession Begins in the Mind
Lesson 1: Your Attitude is Your Window to the World
Lesson 2: You are a Human Magnet
Lesson 3: Picture Your Way to Success!
Lesson 4: Make a Commitment and You'll Move Mountains
Lesson 5: Turn Your Problems into Opportunities

Part 2: Watch Your Words
Lesson 6: Your Words Blaze a Trail
Lesson 7: How are You?
Lesson 8: Stop Complaining

Part 3: Heaven Helps Those Who Act
Lesson 9: Associate with Positive People
Lesson 10: Confront Your Fears and Grow
Lesson 11: Get Out There and Fail
Lesson 12: Networking That Gets Results

Good short read.

Your attitude is basically a window to the world. You attract into your life your deepest thoughts and desires. Thoughts become things. Make commitments to take action, persevere and you will reach new heights. In every adversity there's opportunity, make sure you watch for the opportunity and grab the momentum. Watch your language, you are what you speak of most of the time, negative or positive. How are your attitude to the world? Change your attitude and you change your life. Stop complaining and start counting your blessings. Associate with positive people, pay any price to be in their circle. Fear is a greenlight to opportunity, confront it and you will grow mentally and financially. Get out there and fail, it's good for you. Just make sure you persevere and learn through your failures. Get out there and help as much people as you can, that's the only key to successful networking. Your attitude is everything. Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it, positive or negative.

Overall a good read with all the basic principles. If you can shift your paradigms to the rules covered in the book, I would say that your path to success is half way done.

We're A Better Company Because Of This Book

I own my own business and was encouraged by one of our bankers to read Barton's book. The work is easy to read, well organized and pretty amazingly accurate. In my nine years of running a fairly large company, I've dealt with irate customers, earthquakes, contractors who filed for bankruptcy (mid project!), two serious cases of workplace violence, and assorted other not-so-mild incidents. This book spells out not only what could happen to your company, but what i REALLY loved was reading how other owners and CEO's got their companies out of trouble...and sometimes, how their mistakes made them considerably worse. Barton uses humor, fact, and practical insight to drive home the case for preparedness. I wish there were more photos in the book- those would have made the reading more enjoyable. Yet the case studies and interviews spice the work up very well, and this may be one of the single best books on management I've ever read.

When I saw the author on The Today Show a decade ago, I rushed to buy his book, and I've referred to it dozens of times each year at my job in Los Angeles, CA. To my delight, Dr. Barton has completely updated this book, and it's a joy to read. He examines why corporations in various industries face serious crises more than others, and then supports his arguments with credible, well written analysis. I learned much from the lessons of Coca-Cola's recall last year in Europe; even great brands can misjudge public opinion- and lose hundreds of millions of dollars as a result. I would say the best features of Barton's book are those that reflect on "best practices" in leading companies worldwide. And his new chapters on workplace violence, natural disasters and how to write a crisis management and communication plan all easy to apply, whether you work in public relations, security, human resources or in any position where you supervise people. Since Barton's first edition, he served as Vice President of Communication for Motorola, and I must say that his experience there boosts the practical value of this edition immensely. It's less theory this time, and more "here's the way it is" in writing: I valued his candor about managing downsizing, environmental spills and other serious incidents in the workplace. Barton's bibliography is thinner this time, as he has placed those resources on his web site. But that's a small point. Overall, this remains the single best book on crisis management I've read in a 30 year career spanning the industry. It's a must-read if you are interested in why companies get into serious trouble with the media, stockholders, employees and the public. His book is simply an outstanding read.

It combines real life stories with the scientific data. I recommend this book for anyone the is miscarrying, has miscarried, is pregnant, or wants to get pregnant. 2 thumbs up!!!

This is the book for women who want to take control of their fertility life. This book explains what causes miscarriages, how to test, and what your probabilities are of having different diagnosis or future miscarriages.

Even if you are just wanting to be able to ask intelligent questions to your doctor or fertility specialist, this enables you to have your research done.

No place online - No other book - Nothing I have read has enabled me to feel in control of this situation giving me a direct way to help diagnose myself (to an extent) and give me freedom and ability to question the - "Just go try again." line that you get from doctors.

Strongly recommended to anyone who has had an unfortunate multiple pregnancy loss such as I have.

I was initially a little apprehensive about this book, wondering if it was going to leave me feeling more worried or be full of information that I could do nothing with. It doesn't. This is one of the best books I've read so far and it is so full of up to date information. The author makes it so easy to read, even though it is primarily medical info. The stories that precede each chapter are touching, and a great way to add a personal experience you may relate to. In short, great book, worth every penny, wonderful information. You truly will feel armed with the info you need to confidently experience pregnancy again.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a baby. I wish I had read it before we had a miscarriage and then an ectopic pregnancy. It is reader-friendly and is packed with invaluable information about every aspect of pregnancy loss: physical, emotional, relational, medical. The author speaks from personal experience as well as the experiences of many other couples. Armed with the information in this book alone, I feel confident that we will realize our dream of a healthy pregnancy. I now know what questions to ask, what medical support to request, and when to advocate for my self and my baby.

This book is not for you if you already know a lot about sleep research AND you don't feel at all guilty about the idea of taking a nap when you're dragging. Also, as one reviewer pointed out, it won't give you a magic plan to make your boss decide that naps are actually good for the company; it's not everything to everybody. BUT... I'm in love with this book anyway!

I listened to Dement's book "The Promise of Sleep" a few years back on tape, but never thought about how little attention there is to daytime napping (as opposed to nighttime sleep and sleep problems). If you're sluggish and crave pick-me-ups (chocolate, caffeine, etc.) in the afternoon, this book may be the "ah ha" moment like it was for me. How come we exercise, take supplements, practice "sleep hygiene", try not to eat carb-laden lunches, and more, but we never think about taking naps? Why not give in, rather than fighting the urge?

I've been trying afternoon naps for about 3 weeks now, and for me, it's been like hitting the "reset" button on the day and getting a fresh start. It really seems like the missing piece; it's weird that it's so simple (and yet so culturally forbidden). I can't wait to tell my doctor what a difference such a simple solution has made.

The only trick is figuring out how not to wake up groggy, which the book doesn't cover in great depth. I'm looking forward to checking out the author's postings, and also reading "Power Sleep" by Maas (which gets pretty good reviews), to see if they add details to this book's impassioned plea and conscise intro.

The writing style is really lively, and typos are blessedly absent. It's a refreshing change from the self-published books these days in which the author thought he or she could save money by skipping an editor, since he or she can write "real great," thank you very much!

Finally, for what it's worth: The author comes across as someone who would be inspiring to be around; one of those people who has fallen in love with science and with using it to make the world a better place. Aside from the personal impact the book can have, it's just encouraging to know that there are people like that out there.

Informative but could have gone farther

The book provided a simple overview of the stages of napping and some sample plans for incorporating naps into your day. There was too much time spent on justifying napping for my taste (I'm already a believer) and not enough concrete information about how to plan your nap around individual schedules.

Medical Students: Improve Your Tests Scores by Napping!

Review Date: 2007-05-17
HOW THIS BOOK HELPED ME:

This book has made a big impact on how I view my study time. Medical school is difficult and exhausting. If I attend all my lectures, eat three meals day, maintain good hygiene, commute to/from the university and get 7 hours of sleep, I only have 3 hours on the weekdays to study. I used to hardly be able to keep my eyes open during that study time and I couldn't remember anything I studied.

After reading Take a Nap! Change your life, I have the skills to use napping as part of my study routine. I used to feel guilty when I napped because I thought I was wasting valuable study time. I was just too tired to study. Now I plan naps into my study schedule and it is amazing how much better I recall everything. My test scores in Pathology have improved an average of 8 points since I started napping and my scores keep improving despite no other changes to my study routine. If you subtract out my naps, I'm actually studying less but getting better grades! As I prepare for my USMLE Step 1 Board Exam, consolidating memories and enhancing recall is especially important. I now consider napping a study skill and regular naps are part of my board prep study schedule. Naps have truly changed my life.

HOW THIS BOOK CAN HELP YOU:

I recommend this book to all students, but especially medical students. A career in medicine means long hours and years of sleep deprivation. This book will help you understand why naps are essential for peak performance on tests and review highlights of sleep research. You will learn what stages of sleep are most important for recalling massive amounts of detail and how to maximize those stages of sleep in your naps. You will learn the essential skills of napping for maximum memory and how to create a personalized nap for your individual needs.

Most importantly, the knowledge you gain from this book will also improve your ability to provide quality patient care. The vignettes emphasize how naps can improve all aspects of life. I can already see how naps would be a beneficial part of a therapeutic plan for patients with anxiety, obesity, depression, sexual dysfunction, headaches, sleeping disorders, diabetes, substance dependence, or heart disease.

A WELL ORGANIZED, EASY, QUICK READ WHEN TIME IS A PRECIOUS COMMODITY:

I know that it is hard to find time for recreational reading in medical school. Fortunately, your time investment will be well rewarded by way naps will change your life. The book is written in succinct short chapters so you don't even have to use a bookmark. You'll be amazed how easy this book is to read. It is especially refreshing after studying dense med school textbooks such as Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, Seventh Edition.

Take a Nap! Change your life has very reader friendly lay-out. It is printed in good sized font with attention to white space. Figures are clear and simple to understand. Important concepts are bolded. It is easy to navigate for specific information as well.

I highly recommend this book. I hope that you will start napping and benefit from this book as much as I have.

Radclyffe has done it again! Another great book in the PTown Tales. Storms of Change is a wonderful book that continues the lives of original characters with some exciting additions (Ricarda Grechi/Carter Wayne). As all Radclyffe book do, this story contains love, loyalty, lust, humor, and a passion that all the characters seem to display in some form. And great sex...can't forget that! I enjoyed all the characters and everyone of them brought something different to the table. There are parts of the book that make you want to cry and the next minute laugh out loud! You will not be disappointed in "Storms" and I hope there will be more tales to tell from them! As all of Rads' books, this one will stay in my collection to read again! It was an easy and very enjoyable read.

Into the peaceful lives of Deputy Sheriff Reese Conlon, and Dr. Victoria `Tori' King comes unwelcome, but not altogether unexpected news... the conflict overseas has intensified and Reese's unit has been activated. While Reese is busy putting her affairs in order, other events are taking place. Two new residents have arrived in Provincetown.

Art gallery owner Ricarda `Rica' Grechi, and State Police Detective, Carter Wayne have both arrived in town within a short amount of time. Coincidental? Not really, it seems Carter and Ricarda have met before. Where? Why would both arrive within days of each other? And why is Carter operating under the guise of being "Attorney-at-Law Carter Wayne?"

Could it have anything to do with Ricarda's hopes of beginning a new life for herself...a life far away from her father and the type of life his business entails. Or could it be that Carter's own life is not what she wanted and is hoping for a new start of her own?

Against all odds and suspicions, Ricarda and Carter are drawn to each other, putting both their lives in jeopardy. Someone has followed Rica to her new home, someone bound and determined that she not be allowed to live life on her own terms. Who are they? Why did they follow? What danger do they pose? Will Carter be able to protect them both while trying to complete her mission?

Tori has little or no time to worry about who or what Rica and Carter could be as she awaits Reese's return. A return that becomes even more of a question when word arrives that Reese is MIA - Missing in Action. Tori believes with all her heart that Reese will return to her...to their daughter Regina. Will she be strong enough to believe it for herself, for Reese's mother, for their daughter, for them all?

However, a mission is underway and the one person neither Reese nor Tori would have expected is leading the mission to locate and bring Reese home. The need to have faith in this person is something Tori thought she'd never have. The person leading the mission is Reese's father.

Radclyffe has penned well over 20 novels. Storms of Change, the fourth in her "Harbor" series that began with Safe Harbor, continued with Beyond the Breakwater and Distant Shores, Silent Thunder very much displays the talents of a truly skilled writer. With works ranging from the intensely dramatic "Honor" series: Above All, Honor, Honor Bound, Love & Honor, Honor Guards and Honor Reclaimed to the suspense-filled "Justice" series: A Matter of Trust, Shield of Justice, In Pursuit of Justice, Justice in the Shadows and Justice Served to her dynamic and romantic stand alone novels such as Love's Masquerade, Tomorrow's Promise, Passion's Bright Fury and Love's Melody Lost this author has long proven there is a reason why so many readers anxiously await her next book.

Keeney's unique understanding of cybernetics and human systems is presented in this scholarly work. Here, Keeney attempts to bring the wisdom of Gregory Bateson to working with families and other interactional systems, and it remains a classic in the field of family therapy. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to work outside the normal skull-bound explanations of human experience -- although it may be a mental stretch, it is well worth the resulting wisdom that results from working with both the pragmatic and the aesthetic ("the patterns that connect"). I had to read the book for my Social Justice class. The book is extremely well written. The writing style is basically difficult to read and understand. The material is excellent, but it is written at too high of a level for normal people. I think there are other social work texts that are easier to read and understand. If you are very academically inclined, it is fine. For most of us normal people, I would say it is a bit too much to read. I would go to the library and read before class and was sure to put me to sleep. The academic material is excellent though and offers a challenge to understand it.

Applies Freire to American context
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-19
Gil, working within the worldview of Paulo Freire (see Pedagogy of the Oppressed), presents theories, policies, and practices for social workers who wish to change more than the immediate ills affecting their clients. Social workers who wish to make an impact on the root causes of social disadvantages, termed "radical social workers" by Gil, are encouraged to embrace foundational assumptions that are, at a minimum, highly debatable.

For example, Gil postulates that human societies that existed prior to settlement into agricultural communities were egalitarian, cooperative, and harmonious. These hypothetical cultures are presented as free of domination, individualistic competition, and disregard for the dignity of others. Gil continues describing this "return to the native" utopia as one in which all work was voluntary and inherently self-motivated. The produce associated with community effort was apparently distributed equally in accordance to need.

Frankly, Gil's "historical" analysis is not convincing. The human proclivity to dominance and competitive interaction is most likely genetically innate since it is evidenced in our closest evolutionary cousins, the other Great Apes. In fact, the ascendancy of Homo Sapiens over Neanderthal may be best explained by the former's greater aggressiveness.

Another foundational thought that appears throughout Gil's work is the assumption that capitalism in inherently flawed. The surplus that results from the infusion of capital into the mechanisms of production becomes, in Gil's analysis, the root cause of social stratification and oppressive social structures. While Gil stops short of condemning private ownership of property, the reader cannot be faulted for considering this a logical conclusion consistent with his overarching premise.

It is hard to imagine how anyone can condemn capitalism since the fall of the Berlin wall. Since that time, every country previously denouncing private ownership and free markets has modified their position. China has embraced capitalism since re-acquiring Hong Kong and found significant growth of a new middle class even in provincial regions. Eastern Europe has forsaken communism, and there are free farmers' markets in Moscow. Castro's Cuba may be the single anti-capitalist nation left, and one cannot help wondering how much Castro's survival depends on the ready emigration of social dissidents to the United States.

Is there anything of value in this book? Surprisingly, there is much to commend it. Gil correctly emphasizes the structural obstacles to the elimination of poverty and oppression. He is probably correct in stressing employment-related issues as the most crucial element of structural problems.

He warns social workers that helping can become nothing more than another act of oppression. He challenges social workers to confront the structural causes impeding the progress of their clients. He advocates (along with Friere above and Charles Taylor in The Ethics of Authenticity) a commitment to dialogical processes to raise critical awareness, and he advises social workers on how to build a support system strong enough to withstand the opposition change advocates will inevitably encounter.

I can recommend this book as an exercise in critical analysis, as an introduction to a left-wing social work perspective, and as a challenge to agency-centered social work agendas. I cannot recommend this book as a pragmatic guide to revise contemporary social work policy or practice.

David Gil writes beautifully on oppression in American society in a slim volume that should make a nice contribution to an academic course on oppression or simply for individuals who want to ponder American society and the kind of victim-blaming that seems ingrained in our Puritan heritage.

I keep buying this book and aside from the movie Boondock Saints, it keeps getting snatched by all my friends. I don't ever get to read it myself. My friends like it though. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Lightweight.... but amusing to read

No, this book is not worth including in your own personal library. But it is worth checking out of your public library and reading especially if you have acquaintances and family members who come to you regularly for advise on this or that facet of living. Lieberman provides 3-page analysis-per-question -- for 100 questions -- with the questions running the gamut (e.g. why do I fantasize about having esp/special powers? why do I feel the need to control others? why do I worry about things that will never happen or that I have no control over? why do I obsess over littlest things? why am I a loner? a paranoid? easily distracted?). If one of your troubled acquaintances read the book, there is a chance the book contains some answers to some of their questions. At minimum, there is a possibility this "Instant Analysis" book will lift up their spirits when they realize that they only have four troubling questions when there are over twenty times many more that can be on their list-of-things-to-fret-about.

The "Analysis" part is Very, Very Good

Very happy with this book.
Quick to the point;
"If you behave in this way, then most likely it's because of this..."
It's not written in stone , but it's likely, something to consider.
The "solutions" however are a bit ridiculous.
I wanted the book for the Analysis part anyway, so I was very pleased.
As far as "fixing" something though, good luck.
Having said that however, simply understanding why you may be doing something is a big step in the right direction.

btw;
As someone giving this more that one star;
What the hell is "theropy"?

Possibly the dumbest book ever written

This book had to have been the biggest waste of time I have ever spent. Let me give you the entire context of the book now - You do not consider yourself worthy of good things, and that's why you do X, Y and Z behavior. -
Anyone who has rated this book more than 1 star is in need of deep theropy for liking the book. If I could have given it negative stars I would have. Pick something else.

In sharp contrast with Get Anyone to do Anything, in which Lieberman at times takes the tone of a master manipulator, Instant Analysis seems to be written for people with an inferiority complex and nagging, if trivial, compulsions. I expected a book on controlling behavior and psychological state; what I got was an extravaganze of unrealistic and oftentimes whiny introspection. A few of the chapters:

"Why do I feel numb and unconnected?"
"Why do I do such terrible things even though I'm a good person?"
"Why do I feel as if nothing will ever make me happy?"

The book is comprehensive, albeit comprehensive in answering a lot of questions only seriously unhealthy, unhappy people would ask. If you can find a cheap used copy, go for it. Otherwise, chances are nil that you have all or even most of these (100) issues in your life, and there are better resources for resolving most of them.
