This book is a synapse of the original full-lentgh book. It was not as good as other accounts I have read of near-death experiences. I felt as if the book was written to advance a religious point-of-view.

This is a book that everyone should read. It was mentioned in our Sunday School lesson and sparked my interest. I am usually a "non-reader". I prefer to wait for the movie; however, I read this book in two days.

As many others have noted here, I had high hopes that his book would give more spiritual insight into heaven and faith. However, I was left wanting. The content of the chapters were loosely strung together and the repetition of phrases and lack of cohesion was frustrating. I've yet to finish the final chapters, and I'm not even certain I'll waste my time. The most positive thing I can say about the writing--it had the potential to be a really good book.

This is the roadmap and field book for developing and maintaining healthy and unselfish interactions with others. What does another person need to hear in the first 30-seconds to get their attention? Why should you see a situation from the other person's point of view and what will happen if you don't? This book is filled with real life vignettes that illustrate the power of having a winning attitude. A must for anyone, and those in sales will love it! You will find yourself reading it again and again and using it as a reference tool.
Easy read that will help you at work.

This book can, and will change your life if you will only take the time to read it, absorb the material and put it into practice and the great thing is it's so easy! It was only once I read this book that I realized where I was going wrong both in my social and professional interactions with others, come to think of it, I'm amazed anyone liked me at all! The content of this book, even though it was written years and years ago, is just as valid now as it was then because people don't change. Everyone, no matter who they are wants to be respected, to be appreciated, to be listened to, to be accepted, to feel like they matter; these things will never change whether the year is 1936 or 2050 because human nature is what it is.
What is astounding is that so many people just have no clue when it comes to social interaction and conversing with others yet they could easily correct all this with one reading of "How To Win Friends And Influence People". I personally know a girl who is 32 years old and is stunningly beautiful yet she doesn't have a friend in the world, still lives at home with her parents and cannot find a partner no matter how hard she tries because the only person she thinks about is herself, she has no interest in anything else. Her personality, to put it bluntly, is quite frankly repulsive. It is so frustrating for me because I know her life could improve so dramatically if she would only read this book and put the principles into practice but I know that if I suggested she read it, she would be insulted. So many people say that what Carnegie has to say is "obvious". Well if that is the case, why do so few practice these simple principles?
There is a good reason that this book has been around for years and is one of the best selling books of all time- it's because it's true and it works. So many self help books have since tried to rip off Carnegie's principles and regurgitate the material to try and make a fast buck but his book is still the original and by far the best. Buy it, read it, and your life will change for the better- that's a promise.

First let me say this is a great book I would recomend it to anyone. I read some of the 1 star reviews and was amazed how misinformed these nay sayers were. One person said that it taught that life is for us to fulfill our own perpose instead of living for God. What the book teachs is that serving God is our purpose. Another person said Rick Warren wrote this book just to make money, I guess he doesn't know Rick warren gives away 90% of his income and lives off 10%. He accepts no sallery at all from his church, that doesn't sound much like a person who is motivated by money only to me. The people who have writen these negitive reviews obviously don't get what they call a simple book or have not read it at all. The gospel is not complicated God made it delibritly simple. The purpose driven life is a book that will change your life if you read it with humility and are willing to live a life that is purposely serving God.

This is a tremendous book for everyone including the ones whose faith is lost or non-existent. It gives the reader a more confident starting point to turn their life around and incorporate values that God has laid before us. Rick Warren's undeniable faith is an illuminating source of God's will that inspires oneself to take that leap of faith and place your salvation in the Hands of God.

I had heard of this book many times but never bought or read it. I was especially impressed a few years ago when someone (in Atlanta, I think) used material from it to help her deal effectively with someone who broke into her house. The person had already shot someone the same day. She was struggling with many issues before the intruder came. Together they talked about content of the book in a way that made a difference.
Finally, I was moved to get the book after the faith forum between McCain and Obama at Saddleback Church in August 2008. I was so impressed with the way he dealt with both candidates. I wanted to read more about what Warren says and learn more about how he says it.
I highly recommend the book.

My copy, from Christmas 2004, says "over 15 million copies sold". I see cover copy on books in stores now showing 20 or 30 million sold.
So, this is not a new or little-known book, and obviously, many people have read it and find it very good, and indeed it is. Warren gives five Biblical purposes for life, consistently using scripture (in many different translations where they help convey meaning). And while the book does occasionally reference other "PDL" products like the journal, it doesn't appear to be a sales tool for these other products.
In fact, the The Purpose-Driven Life Journal in conjunction with a good study translation (New American Standard, New Internation, or King James) is a great way to study and make notes.

Wow-really good book!! On a side note, would have prefered the Bible references at the point of reference ( eg Psalm 23:1 and not '2' so as to prevent the need to continually turn to the back of the book. I am at day 12 and I am really impressed at how applicable this book is to my life. Again, I wonderful read

i absolutely love James Patterson!!! In this 3rd installement of the women's murder club 3rd degree is a book you dont want to put down. Each chapter leaves you wanting more i couldnt wait to see the ending. The part I did not expect was when they killed off the d.a jill. I didnt expect that to happen and although it isnt going to be the same main 4 characters I know he probably wouldnt have done it if he had to. so in all i give this book 5 out of 5 i highly recommend it

I loved the Women's Murder Club books, but I really can't stand it when readers are insulted by unnecessary inconsistencies. In books 1 & 2, Jill's husband was named Steve and in book 3, suddenly his name is Rick! In book 2, Lindsay's father shared a good relationship with her and she had good memories of him up until her walked out before her mother got sick. She only saw him one other time after he left and she even confronts him for not attending her mothers funeral. However in book 5, suddenly her father was a mean man who didn't walk out until after her Mum died and he was there at the funeral.
A little bit more attention to detail would make this series an absolute delight for all readers and fans!

I see this was written in 2001 and I have enjoyed other books better from Sparks since this was written. Not to say avoid this book but this reader was a little less impressed with the character and story flow in "a bend..." I guess my main problem is the protagonist Miles, a sheriff in a small town who comes off a little silly and too drama prone for the story's own good. Still can't wait to read another novel by this talented writer.

I have become a Nicholas Sparks fan and have come to expect certain things with his writing. This and At First Sight were the two exceptions for which I couldn't imagine the ending if I tried. This book chronicles Miles Ryan and his son, Jonah, attempting to live their lives as normally as possible after the death of their wife and mother. While walking along a bendy road, she is struck by a vehicle, covered with a blanket, and left. Miles, an employee of the sheriff's department, is completely distraught and finds himself investigating on his own while his department also investigates. Eventually, he moves on and begins to fall for his son's teacher, Sarah. This story is very touching and romantic, and also is a frank portrayal of an adult attempting to get back in touch with the dating scene he has been out of for so long. While at times the book was predictable, Sparks' writing gives it an unexpected edge and you will find yourself enjoying it, even if you have a feeling about what's to come.

This pocket-size book gives basic nutritional information, including total carbs and net carbs, on hundreds of foods. Most products round the number of grams of fiber to the closest whole number (or the closest higher whole number) on their labels, but Atkins lists fractional totals of grams of net carbs and fiber. There is also a modestly-sized listing of common fast foods.
In his section on vegetables, Atkins touts the value of cruciferous vegetables, garlic, etc. (p. 84). This alone should refute the silly myth of the Atkins diet being an all-meat diet. Atkins also includes a listing of "forbidden" high glycemic-impact foods. These should be enjoyed only occasionally, in very small portions, and then only by people on Lifetime Maintenance.
Portion size is important in weight control. But many conventionally-listed portions (e. g., in oz) are hard to visualize, and recommended portions are often much smaller than most people realize. For this reason, Dr. Atkins provides visual references (pp. 19-20). For example, a 3 oz serving of meat would be the size of a small pack of cigarettes.

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!
My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)
The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.
It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.
It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.
If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

[...] Seriously this was the 4th book in this Alex Cross series, it may not have been all that bad if you knew the back stories/characters. OK, coming off my soap box now.
So the basic story line, Soneji is back and he is a twisted SOB... he wants to take out as many people as possible as well as Cross. He has a plan and the plan unfolds quickly and pretty darn exciting. However through the first half of the book you start to read about this other psycho "Mr. Smith" who is one his own murder spree... the twist in plot hits! And you wont be able to stop reading!
I think this may have been one of my favorite Patterson books to date. I love the twist in plot mid way through, it really made it difficult to put it down at that point. If you are a fan of twists in the plot that you didn't see coming then this book is for you. Great Summer time read!

ive read 2 books now of pattersons and both left me feeling like ive wasted my time and money. his characters are one dimensional. cross for example is as vanilla as they come....boooooring. the only thing that saved this book from a 1 star was a scene involving a dog house. one scene out of the whole book. every chapter involving cross fawning over his love interest ( his childrens principal) was laughably bad and merits skipping. the way patterson chose to create his villain was unoriginal. if youre looking for bathroom reading material and not a serious read this might be for you. otherwise save your money.

Alex finds himself totally involved with his work and he is having some big issues with this personal life. He has a bank robber that is getting away with murder and the money. The villain is a control freak. He has plans for one last perfect crime of his career. There are many surprises in the story. Patterson leaves some problems to be answered in some future book. This book reads like a synopsis or a book proposal. It's the Cliff Notes version. I appreciate a brisk pace, and Mr. Patterson certainly holds my attention, but there is almost no plot or character development, and the ending is a total cheat. There is no build-up to the big revelation at the end- it's just tacked-on, a big let-down. This is a good idea for a novel; add another 150 pages to flesh out the story and set up the ending, and there's a good book.

This is a great book to kick start your personal relationship with self. Dr Phil uses his personality, experience, and education to help others learn the valuable lessons of life. I could totally relate to his book.
Great addition to finding a healthier life, while keeping it simple.

Self Matters is Dr. Phil's self-help guide to achieving awareness of ones true self, which he believes will lead to a more rewarding and fulfilling life. Dr. Phil postulates that we are ultimately responsible for the way we are, what we think, feel, and how we behave. Even if we are living with a fictional self-concept of ourselves, it is because we have chosen to do so. The problem is that we tend to make these choices based on the expectations or influences of others, or based on external events for which we have no control.
Self Matters tends to be simplistic in its approach and also in the real-life examples Dr. Phil uses to illustrate his points. Of course, it has to be if the average person is going to use this book as a guide to practicing therapy on themselves. However, Dr. Phil does provide some key insights into the nature of relationships and personal behavior, and uses a number of interesting labels to describe the determinants of our thinking and behavioral processes.
This book will be of benefit to people who meet the following criteria (per Dr. Phil): You believe in God, and that God has a plan for you. You believe that you have a purpose in life, and if you dont realize that purpose, your life will be unfulfilling. You have had one or more profoundly negative experiences in your childhood that has altered your thinking and behavior in a negative way. As a result, you have developed a fictional concept of your true "authentic self", and this "fictional self" causes you to make bad choices/decisions in life. You tend not to be aware that you are living a life that is based on this fictional self.
Dr. Phil then outlines a lengthy process of self-awareness exercises, that involve you recounting your significant life experiences, choices, feelings, beliefs, self-concepts, and their related consequences. Through the process of reviewing, uncovering, and understanding your life's key moments, you become aware of their signifance and value, which will be either positive or negative. With this new awareness, you can create an action plan for changing your thinking and behavior, in a way that will eliminate your fictional self-concepts, and restore you back on track with your authentic self. Or so the theory goes. The older you are the harder it will be to effect this change.
Whether you are successful with Dr. Phil's guide seems to depend on whether you really want to change, your honesty and sincerity with your self, your level of commitment, and your faith in God. Some may be wondering how God fits into the science of psychotherapy, or whether psychotherapy alone, or religion alone, could achieve the same result. Finally, I found it interesting that Dr. Phil would quote Carlos Castaneda in this book. Is Dr. Phil practicing psychology or shamanism, or a little of both?

This book changed the way I look at myself and the way I look at the rest of the world. One of the best books I've ever read and I recommend it to anyone who wants to change their perception and get the most out of their life.
Starts off good.

Good if you are willing to do the work. I like the inspirational talk at the beginning, but wasn't interested in the rest. Tried reading the book first and had a hard time getting to the end...now I know why.

Overall, I don't think this was really what I was looking for personally but this was still an easy set of tapes to listen to. Dr. McGraw is an excellent speaker and kind of funny at times. It's worth the money if you are looking for positive thoughts on changing your life or changing habits in your life. Give it a try!
