This is now my favorite Susan Elizabeth Phillips book, right up there with Hot Shot, Fancy Pants, and the ultimate novel: Honey Moon. I loved it for the same reasons I loved those other titles. She writes a moving story with romance that does not come quick and easy for the characters involved. I think her characters are very complex and well-drafted. And I am consistently amused by her dialogue. From where do these ideas spring? I completely agree with the former review that Susan Phillips is a natural at this writing thing. I have never read a story by her that did not touch me. While it can be cute to see two people fall in love and have the biggest problem they face be that of who tells who they love each other first and will he/she marry me ('cause I like those two types also), Susan Phillips takes her characters on a journey of self-discovery transforming them into characters with the same strength in which they're written. Fleur Savagar, Honey Moon, and Francesca all fit the bill. I like it when characters (in film or books), who are already intelligent and special, discover that they are stronger than they think or know they are. Glitter Baby is a gem with everything that I like to read in any book. I'd buy it again!

Pay whatever you have to...this book's worth every cent!

I know all of you fellow Susan Elizabeth Phillips fans are gonna secretly wonder if it will be worth the extra bucks you'll have to fork over to get a copy of this hard to find out of print book. I will tell you, it really is. Dont let the thought that this is her first book deter you either. She must have been writing in the womb! Her newest novel, THIS HEART OF MINE, is just as good. If you read all her books in chronilogical order, some will be even more enjoyable since she will branch off sometimes and give prior characters their own stories. Get a copy of this if you can, then check out Amazon's other choices for her and buy every one you can, you will re-read every one several times if you love deep, penetrating writing like only SEP can deliver!

I found this book by accident at UBS while traveling up the coast. Boy, was I lucky because it was only like... $2.00!!! I actually can't make up my mind if I like this one more than I liked "Hot Shot" again, this writing style reminded me of earlier "Judith Michael" books. Definately takes you through time from Fleur childhood to womanhood, her relationship with her mother and her lover. I enjoyed this one and I do highly recommend if you can find it buy it. Someone mentioned in a review also on here that it is a rather dated book. Well it is but if you can keep that in mind while still enjoying the depth and details of the story, you won't be dissatisfied.

Happy Reading

This is an excellent book. In fact, I am rereading it for the 2nd time. (Yes, that means this is my 3rd time.) The characters are wonderfully developed, and I can't wait to read more books by her. It's one of those books I will never let go of. It will stay in my collection for a long time to come.

I was very dissatisfied with this product. The pictures are shown in the ad on a dark background. When you get them, they're on a white background, printed in very pale colors, with very bright glitter. It makes them hard to see. They don't look at all like they do in the ad.

I dont consider this book clever or inspiring I dont care who designed what, why would it make the slightest difference to know unless I wanted to write that person and thank them. I havent found enough in here to thank anyone for. Book and tiaras are boring.I might have not minded paying 5.00 for but I paid more and dint get a bargain for my money in my opinion These are typical junky craft ideas mostly not unlike the old craft shows Eileen used to put out but we didnt realize quality until Martha came along. She gave us a standard to meet and exceed.

I don't know why there would be anything negative to say about this book..It is so beautiful. There are large close up images of each crown. I love this book and am so glad I found it. The only thing negative in my opinion is that I don't have one of the crowns shown in the book!

I also don't understand the negative reviews of this book which kept me from ordering it from Amazon for a long time. I found it at a book store this evening and after a quick flip through its pages, wished I had gotten it sooner. So I paid the cover price so I could have it immediately.

The beautiful photos alone are worth the cost of the book, which I think at $14.95 was a bargain. Lovely work from each artist. So much creativity and it's fun to see how each has a style unique from the others...Ya, I agree that it would have been nice for each artist to have been given credit next to their creations, but it didn't keep me from enjoying the book any less.

Most of the projects probably aren't for a beginning crafter to easily recreate but the book is full of so much creativity, whimsy and inspiration, how could you not enjoy going through it? It's a great addition to my crafting library and I highly recommend it!

My daughter has struggled with learning how to read. She is 11 and reads at about a fifth grade level. She has consistently been at least one grade level behind and would become very frustrated when asked to read. This is the first book series she has ever read completely on her own! She loves the first three and has been begging to get the rest. I have placed a pre-order on the last three. I can't comment on the story much beyond the fact that she raves about it, but any book that helps my daughter discover a love for reading deserves 5 stars.

Not the greatest book in the series

Ok. I don't mean to be rude but this book really was not good. I mean the book was good is just I don't like Kara and I find she is way, way, way to jealous of her friends and selfish not to mention spoiled. Kara wishes she can have a jewel and later she finds one but there are these weird creatures who stalks her. At the end it's good but Kara can act such a queen.

Okay

I was going to give this book three stars, but then I rethought it. This book wasn't all that bad. This book was kind of a let down after the first Avalon book, but still not the worst in the series. This time, the story is focused mainly on Kara. In the first book, the story was focused mainly on Emily. Kara must find out who she is and what her magic means. Kara finds a jewel and must decide whether or not to use it. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, in the beginning, Kara showed some pretty poor personality traits and from the beginning, I thought it was going to be a failure in the Avalon series. I was wrong, but I wasn't entirely. At the end of this book, Kara is still a bit of a snob and we really don't find out what a Blazing Star is. Myself, being a fan of Emily, cannot really relate to the "injustices" that Emily and Adriane put upon her. Still, if you liked the first book, read this one, and be sure to read Book Three. It's a major inprovement.

From a long time fan

Alright, I'll give this book a bit more credit than most. I agree with alot of people saying karak, the protagonist for this book, is a bit too much like a queen. But then again we have to remember where shew comes from. Kara is the Mayor's daughter and always got what she wanted until she met people who opposed her, aka Adriane and Emily. In this book Kara starts off seeking power to spite the other two, but as the book moves along you can tell some chaaracter development, which was really needed in this series for her.
This book wasn't my favorite out of the series, but it made way for an even better story and more rounded characters. In book 3, cry of the wold, kara is evedentily more mature due to what had happened in the last book.
For me, this book was a bit boring because there was no really big magical catastrophe, or at least it didn't seem like it while reading, but it did allow for some major characterization which, in the end, turnedout to be better.

Not bad....

Well it was ok but... well Kara sorta acts all the Queen of the world and stuff which I think is a little ennoying but it was still an excellent book to read and caught my attention. Kara meeets with a felione cat Lyra, gets a jewel.. not reallly but later on in the series, and the mages finally see the Dark Sorceress. Ohh ya I tried to go on Avlonclubhouse but what do you know it didn't work which bis really odd. Instead it showed this Go Daddy thing! Figures anyways buy this book people that depends if you like Kara but if you don't then you may not.

Excellent bedtime story for my little boys

On fitful nights, when my boys are having trouble getting to sleep, I read them this story. Thomas can't fall asleep and awakens another train, who sends him off in search of shooting star just to get some quiet. Thomas' search results in meeting several other friends but no shooting star. Finally, exhausted, Thomas returns to the train shed and falls asleep.

The message is subtle enough to share without belaboring the point. The illustrations are very nice and I like both the pacing and the length of the story (as one other reviewer said, the book is the perfect length for a bedtime story).

We own a number of Thomas books (check my other reviews). This is one of the better stories we've come across.

Just a fun story for the little ones.

Tommy Stubbs's illustrations are beautiful and friendly-looking; the book is of great quality, with a cloth binding and nice paper. The details (like a visit from an owl) are cool and fun to talk about with my almost-two-year-old. My only problem with this book is that Thomas sneaks out past his bedtime without telling anyone but a sleepy [and irresponsible] Gordon. I'm not saying kids will imitate Thomas, necessarily, but if my son had insomnia I'd rather he read a book than sneaked out of the house! Of course, it wouldn't be easy for a train to read a book, so I don't know what I'm suggesting for the storyline in Thomas and the Shooting Star, but it does bother me just a little that Thomas slips out on his own.
My son really enjoys reading the book, though, and he'll ask us to read it several times in the same day. It's definitely a fun story.

Finally an excellent review of what the first World War did to German culture and psyche. This book lays it all out. Hitler was a logical consequence. Unfortunately the Western world did not pay enough attention to these portentious signs. The book has beautiful color reproductions, great detailed commentary on each artist featured and enaough historical commentary to make it all plausible.

This is the catalogue for a beautiful exhibition held at the Met last year. The paintings reproduced here are among the best examples of the New Objectivity, a movement that was able to depict the atmosphere, the soul, the world of the Weimar Republic, that brief time span when pre-war Germany enjoyed freedom in the arts and in the minds. These gripping paintings show how ultimately doomed that world was and how the artists were the first to sense the tragic developments that were to succeed it. The front cover, a detail of one of Christian Schad's best known paintings, is a perfect illustration of a society that seems to have enjoyed life knowing that death would come too soon, with the end of that joyful and poetic decadence that was the Berlin of the 1920's.

Twice viewed the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum here in New York. German art in the 20s is raw, obscene and decadent. A raucus reflection on hard times there. They had just suffered WW1, in the midst of fascism, insane inflation, etc.
Highlight: Otto Dix is a wild artist, forever a favorite now. Also a DaDa artist.
I am a frequent art museum visitor. Therefore, in my opinion, this catalogue did the show great justice which is not aways the case.

Welcome to a new year for Flan. After a fall semester at Stuy, Flan has finally realized that the private school setting is where she belongs. She feels far more comfortable around the girls that she went to Miss Mallard's with. So, with the winter break over, Flan begins classes at Thoney.

Thankfully, she has made up with her lost best friend, Camille, when they were both on Thanksgiving break on Nevis. So Flan has a friendly face as she enters the halls of her mother and sister's alma matter. She needs a good friend because her nemesis, Kennedy, is the ruling queen of the class.

Flan easily fits into life at Thoney, and Camille's friends readily accept Flan as one of their own. The first day of school doesn't go perfectly for Flan, but she knows that Thoney is where she truly fits in. After classes the first day, the girls meet up for pizza with a group of guys from the brother school, Dalton. All the faces are familiar, many of them having spent Thanksgiving in Nevis as well. Flan is pleased to see TZ there, but also, surprisingly, Alex.

ALL THAT GLITTERS is a fast-paced jaunt through Flan's first two weeks at Thoney. There are squabbles with Kennedy and Willa, her sidekick. There's a competition to host Virgil. There's always SBB to keep calm and relaxed. There's a fashion show that Flan's agreed to model in. And the gossip. You can expect lots of gossip in ALL THAT GLITTERS, like the rest of J. Minter's works.

For a look into the privileged lives of New York City kids, pick up ALL THAT GLITTERS and the rest of the INSIDE GIRL novels. You'll see how the other half lives. And you can't help but love the life Flan leads.

Well, so far this series has not grabbed me & really pulled me into the book but it's all right. I find myself finding many mistakes. In book #1 the spelling for Grandmere's friend was Thibbodeau & in book #2 it was all of a sudden Thirbodeau & in book #3 it was Thibodeau. 2 b's then an r & no 1 b. Also, in this book at one point Ruby was remembering the day that she painted Beau nude & remembered that later that same day was when they made love for the first time but it wasn't later that day it was immediately after she painted the portrait. I just feel that the author of this book is not even that much into the series that they're forgetting little details. These aren't huge things but I'm finding many little things like this that's just irritating me. This is the 5th series I've read of V.C. Andrew's so far & I have to admit that I think it's my least favorite. I would recommend an earlier series from her & skip this one.

Suspenseful

All that Glitters, begins a year after Ruby returns to Houma, and gives birth to Pearl. The book is very suspense-filled, and has many dark chills in it. It is sort of like a soap opera. But it has the same senario as all of past V.C. Andrews books. What makes it fun, is that it takes place in the swamps of the bi-yu!!!

I found it suspenseful and faced-paced because, in the first half of the book, Ruby marries her half-brother, Paul. But they keep their distance from each other! Still they both pretend Pearl is their child, and they reside, in the deep swamps of Houma.

All of a sudden that brick wall falls, and Ruby is living with Beau in New Orleans, as her twin sister Giselle.

There is a chilling climax that will leave you reading the last three chapters without putting the book down. You will enjoy it!

Although you might think Ruby is a little self-ish to the people who love her the most.

Good style, weak plot

I read every single V.C. Andrews novel and I dare to say that they went downhill right from here. The first two Landy books were good - they were similar to the other series but there was something charming about it, also, I liked Ruby's character. In this book, I honestly wanted to kick her butt.

First of all - why did she marry Paul? She knew not only that he is her brother, but also that he is deeply in love with her. Secondly - this whole pretending-to-be-Gisselle was ridiculous. Everyone knew how different these twins were despite their looks. Ruby behaved selfish throughout the entire book, so did Beau. And all of the others died, I think ... is that supposed to be a plot?! The style is good - but that is not enough to create a good book.

Stick to "Flowers in the attic" and the original VCA-novels. You will be disappointed with this one.

The Third Book in the Landry Series
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-24
It's been years since I've read "All That Glitters," so I figured a "4" rating would be accurate enough. However, this book happens to be where I paused from reading Andrews' following books. Instead I went back to her old series, because I was getting a bit bored with the same plot lines. I had held out this long hoping something would change; it didn't. Stopping in the middle of this series is probably why I didn't particularly like the Landry books--or maybe it's vice versa; I don't know. But I did like the Louisiana setting. That's one thing I like about her books: the setting.

In "All That Glitters," the main relationships between 18-year-old Ruby Dumas (the protagonist), her wealthy halfbrother/childhood sweetheart Paul Tate, her twin sister Gisselle, and her baby's father Beau Andreas come full circle to where they had begun initially in "Ruby." Ruby returns to the bayou and reluctantly marries Paul in order to provide some stability for her newborn daughter, Pearl. And Gisselle and Beau elope for their own twisted reasons--Gisselle's: to get even with Ruby; Beau's: to pretend he's still with Ruby.

But then the men switch places yet again when Gisselle falls into a coma (thus explaining the Sleeping Beauty-like front cover), and Ruby's not-so-well hidden feelings for Beau are allowed to be played out when she pretends to be his wife/her own sister. This whole scheme was quite bizarre (why Paul agreed to this, I can't understand), though it was fun to read. Still, my opinion of Ruby certainly changed afterwards. Paul, like a lot of the lovers/relatives of the heroine, is the typical doting--more or less obsessed--male protagonist, and you almost feel sorry for him. That or you want to smack him in the head to wake some sense up in him. Though that's kind of a moot point by the end.

During all this romantic drama, a few more characters die, such as Daphne (no big loss there--she's just the evil stepmother), as well as a few more important characters (their deaths are rather tragic). "All That Glitters" is the last book told from Ruby's point of view. The following book, "Hidden Jewel" (#4), is passed on to her daughter, and the series wraps up with the prequel, "Tarnished Gold" (#5). And if you started in the middle of this series, then don't forget the first two: "Ruby" (#1) and "Pearl in the Mist" (#2).
