I still remember it as being one of the most disturbing books I had read even today.
Similar story to Sean Penn's film "Bad Boys", a poor 15 year old fatherless boy is thrown into juvenile detention for a robbery he did not commit.
In it he is surrounuded by some of the worst elements and sickest people in from the lowest parts of society, and that's not counting the fellow inmates.
The book, though written in the late 70s - early 80s, is timeless. A lot of what is described in it is true today.
At the end of the story, Freddie is found not guilty and freed, but only after having gone through a great deal of injustice and pain.
The book does not have a happy ending and one can imagine that Freddy has been traumatized for life.
The system does not attempt to make any reparations or compensation to his shattered life.
No punishment is metted out to the sadists that run the detention center, the police who arrested him, the inept teachers, or the district attorney who was looking for another trophy. Like the end of "1984", life goes on. A very brutal and sad book.
